Hey guys,
I've been on aD for a while, but I don't have a PS3 so I haven't been around here alot. But now I need your help and opinions.
A friend of mine is selling his PS3 along with accessories and games for a sick price, and I'm seriously thinking of getting it. The cheapest I can get a new PS3 bundle here is for 1750SR (~ 450 US$). He is charging 800SR (~210 US$) for his one.
This is what that will net me
-- Playstation 3 console (without the original packaging/box, but with all instructions)
-- 2 SixAxis controllers and 1 DualShock 3 controller (total 3 wireless controllers )
-- HDMI and AV-OUT cables along with the power cable [duh... ;)]
-- A case/bag to hold the ps3 when not in use
(He is also selling games for a really really cheap price compared to the price of new games here)
He bought the PS3 as a 60Gb bundle 2 years ago, in June '07. He told me his old hard drive got corrupted so he upgraded it to a 120Gb one, which is included in the deal.
Some points that I'm concerned about:
1--He bought it 2 years ago, so there is no warranty. He also says has used it quite heavily at times. Were / are there any problems with the 60Gb consoles that were released around that time???? (I haven't heard of any but.......)
I prefer having a warranty, but what are the chances of it going bust soon after I buy it????
2--He said he isn't giving me a warranty, but he will give me three days to try the crap out of it. This seems fair, but I have major final exams in a month (AS finals) and I'll only be able to test it for about half a day if I get it now (I'm not sure if he'll hold it for me till after my exams [end of may])
3--If I do buy it, what things should I check once I get it to make sure its working properly????
I'd like to know what you guys think, and what you would do????
I'm really double minded here, beacuse I'll never find a PS3 this cheap here for a ling time, but I'm a little concerned about the lack of warranty and 2 years of usage.
Thanks Alot

Worst can happen is HDD failure or BD to die.
The HDD is new as you said, so your only concern is the BD drive.
From what i have seen BD drives most of the time dont die all the sudden, most of the BD drives die cause dust.
If you think that you friend was keeping it clean then go ahead IMO.
I have the 60gb from march 2007 and works like a charm but i keep it clean and i use air spray once a week or so.

Thanks for the feedback
I live in a dusty place, so I'll have to be more careful
I'm not sure what you mean by taking care of the BD, I mean I dont think he treats it like crap, but I don't know if he cleans it either
I don't mind cleaning the drive using compressed air, but would I have to open up the ps3 to do this????
ALSO, I've read some things on the Yellow light of death or something on the ps3, can anyone tell me how likely this is to happen

Welcome to the PS3 board Ray :).
Sounds like a good deal, as long as you trust your friend you should be ok.
Here are my thoughts...

I dont think heavy use should be a problem as long as it was looked after. For example, it wasn't in a confined area where it could have regularly overheated.

If you can test it for half a day, i would assume that would be ok. The only real problems are BD failure and HDD issues, so just make sure it reads ALL types of disk (Blu-Ray (preferably check a game and a movie), CD and DVD), and ensure it switches on OK etc, you shouldn't have any problems.
But, obviously (like any PS3) it could fail at any time, or you could get 8 years trouble free use from it.

Just make sure the above checks out and you should be fine.

The Yellow light (or YLOD if your 360 minded) means that the PS3 has a "general hardware error". This could be anything from faulty power supply to a crapped out GPU, although i understand a bad HDD is the most common cause. AFAIK, there is not a massive problem with it, and its no-where near as big as the 360 Red Ring stuff...i'd say it's really not worth worrying about untill you actually get the yellow light when you try to power it up.
Personally, i'd say go for it (as long as the stuff i mentioned checks out). Sounds like a good deal, and you'll love the PS3!

Hopefully your friend doesn't sell you something that doesn't work. A good deal is hard to pass up though.

I'd pick up one of these over using compressed air; when it comes to the BD drive anyway.

DO NOT use a normal lens cleaner with a brush on the ps3, there's a high chance it will damage it. This one has holes in the disk which create a vacuum cleaning the interior of the drive. I'm going to pick one up if I ever run into one around me.

Alright, cool
He used to use it on the floor away from the TV (not in a confined space like an entertainment unit), I know, because I have played on the console at his house :D :D

True, true it could just fail (my luck) but I hope it won't
I'll be able to check it using CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray games, but I don't think I have any Blu ray movies (I'll ask and see if he does)

Alright, thanks.
So I guess I don't have to worry about this too much then ;)

Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep an eye out for it
Great responses, I definitely want to buy this beast, and today I'll ask him if he can hold it till the end of our exams, else if I get it now I WILL FAIL :P
I'll negotiate today and get back to you
