My PS3 makes a lot of noise. Not any noises from the disc drive or anything, just the fan is pretty loud. Is this generally how PS3s are or what? Are yours completely silent or do they all make some degree of noise? My Wii, by comparison, is absolutely silent.
Dunno... how loud is "pretty loud"? If it sounds like it's blowing extra hard, then you might have a problem on your hands. If it's just sounding like a regular PC or quieter, then I don't think there's anything wrong with it.
D'you have a 360? Test it against that. If it's as loud as the 360, then yes, you've got a problem. (Har har. Y'see, y'see what I did there? I insinuated that the 360's loud. Heh. Heh. It's funny 'cuz it's true...)

Anyway...is it a constant noise, or does it get louder and quieter etc?
It changes between loud and then pretty silent. I dont think anything is wrong with it, just wanting to know generally how they are. And I dont have a X360.
Well the PS3's fan will speed up when the system gets warm, and should slow down again afterwards, so hopefully shouldn't be a problem.
That being said, my old PS3 kept making a lot of fan noise randomly. Then i'd switch it off and immediately back on and it would be fine. I returned it and had it replaced, and haven't heard a peep out of my new one since (touch wood).
Try cleaning the vents out with compressed air/a low powered vacuum cleaner...see if that helps.

I qued to the PS3 when it was first released in Ireland. I brought it home, set it up but thought the fan was really loud. A mate of mine got one the same night but his wasn't half as noisy as mine. I went back with my recipt and got a replacement no problems.
I haven't had any problems since but you're the only other person I've heard of with the same problem.
