I want to pick some users brains: this is what happened i was downloading map pack for cod and playing it also well my ps3 froze i coudnt do anything except flick the switch on the back off and on well when i restarted the ps3 i didnt try a disk i finished the download. the next day no disks would fire up i mean nothing.....checking online i found a few threads i tried these thing.
1. took the ps3 apart
2. moved the laser then inserted a disk
3. i noticed it came back to normal position
4. i also noticed a blinking red light

i ordered a new kes 400aaa does everyone believe this is the problem?

COD4 use to be a known cause of laser death for some reason back in the early 2.xx firmwares up to 2.43 iirc. This is the first case of it that I've heard in awhile.

But yeah your laser is dead unfortunately and since you already opened it up you lost all chance of sending it to Sony to get it fixed so your going to have to replace the laser and hope that it does the trick.

Just make sure you order the right laser for your ps3 model, several different types were made and they aren't compatible back and forth.

it is cod 5 world at war, what i have been reading is that every time the ps3 freezes none of the buttons work so they use the switch on the back then the ps3 doesnt read disks.
