PS3 sales to jump 15 percent over next fiscal year, says Sony

article published on 3 April, 2009

According to Sony America head marketing executive John Koller, PlayStation 3 and PSP sales will rise 15 percent over the upcoming fiscal year. The current fiscal year for Sony ended March 31st. "We've been very bullish on PSP," Koller said in an interview. "We had our largest sales year ever last year, and we?d look to go about 10-15 per cent north of that this year. "It's for a number ... [ read the full article ]

they don't get it! it is NO LONGER the cheapest Blu-Ray player anymore! that's what helped its sales! you can buy one for $160 now days! half the price of a PS3! they just ost there advantage! I was gonna get a PS3 cause i could play games & lu-ray but now that i can get a cheaper stand alone i most likely wont spend the extra $250 for the ability to play a few games! (i have 360 & wii all ready)

If Sony cuts the 80gb PS3 to $300, wouldn't their shareholders ask for their head? Sony is losing money this quarter too I think. PS3 was ahead of it's time. PS2 beat out Dreamcast because demand for DVD was there in 2000 and the PS2 at the time was reasonably priced to double as a DVD player. That's why the PS2 stole attention away from the Dreamcast despite being beaten to a release a year ahead of time. However, demand for Blu-Ray just wasn't there in 2006 (competition with HD DVD made people gunshy, HDTV penetration was much lower, etc.) and the PS3 was like $500 minimum then. So using Dual Layered DVDs didn't hurt 360 like 1.2GB GD-ROMs hurt Dreamcast. Now that Blu-ray players are cheap, it's too late for Sony to win back the gen after the 360 established themselves first.

I think it was more the PS2 had a better setup for games that brought everyone to the table, the carry over from the PSX also helped greatly, it was not the DVD player aspect of it.

The PS3 has had many issues but every month it gets better and better(the new dev kit that can port to wii and 360 is nails in the 360s coffin) the 360 is slipping and the WII is off in its own world so its all sky for the PS3 unless sony pulls another dumb trick out of their hat....

The 360 doesn't seem to be slipping if you look at the statistics. From the looks of things, 360 seems to be keeping sales steady outside of Japan overall or even improving somewhat. Whether PS3 will catch up in the future is up for debate. Sony could do more to catch up but so as long as their shareholders keep them tied down, they won't be able to take that price cut to stimulate sales. But slipping is a present tense word. And in the present, the ps3 is failing to capitalize on the gains they made in 2008.

Obviously PS3 creams 360 in Japan and they've started to beat Wii week to week since Feb 21st. Looks like they're getting tired of the Wii there now.

Outside of America and Japan, the 360 to ps3 hardware sales ratio in recent weeks (with the exception of the week of KillZone 2's debut) has stayed about the same as the all-time ratio for the consoles (1.15:1). So things are pretty steady in the 'Europe/Other' category.

In American charts (look at VG Chartz), the PS3 has yet to make progress in hardware sales since 2008.

American Hardware Sales

2008 Total

360: 5,537,230
PS3: 3,922,378

2009 Total

PS3: 855,898

Monthly (March)

360: 401,436
PS3: 278,170
360 to PS3 Ratio: 1.443

Weekly (ending Mar 27)

Hello Recession ! There is a recession in North America... isn't there? What other company is forecasting a 15% increase in sales while there is a recession not seen since the great depression? Good Luck Sony...you'll need it...LOL !

Add the WII and Asian market to it and its not so good, you have to remember they are not making a profit and every month that goes buy they do not drastically improve they slip.

The reason for it is simple between the WII and the nuke sony has(cheap mulch platform dev kit) things are not looking up.

Its like the car companies in the US you have iffy product(fail rate, hardware design/build) that costs money(hardware+live+game price) a saturated market and little over all profit if any you will hit the wall hard.

The 360 is doing pretty good but its not good enough to sustain itself in the coming years.

Hey Oner if you got yer eyes pealed here let you ask you a question, what are the chances of the Xbox brand talking over Onlive and that becoming the new nextbox?

Its insane if not mad but future proofed(if they rent the hardware out cheap) with infinite possablitys for profit since it seems everyone from google to MS is looking to join up with it.

Number one you can't take VGChartz seriously. you have to take their numbers with a grain of salt and realize a few things. They have been shown time and time again to pad 360 #'s and short change Sony's across the board, they go by a "guestimate" for most of their so called totals and when NPD/Chartget or proper documentation amounts are released they tend not to adjust the info accordingly (especially for certain consoles) which just compounds the issue. But on to your question Zippy...

The mass public isn't ready (or even totally capable) for a network distributable solution. Now that's not to say it won't be a viable option ultimately for the end user or whoever ends up owning the IP of Onlive but it will definitely have troubles in certain places in the world like rural EU, definitely Australia and even here in the States where we are pretty damned low on the statistics of usage, coverage and overall speeds.

Your guess is as good as mine right now as it's too early to tell who is going to take the chance with this new tech at this time. It's a pretty nice idea on paper but does it really have what it takes to keep the development of "new" technology in the long run? Or is this kind of a "cop out" solution for the owner/devs to stagnate innovation ? Which can also leaves the consumer detached from having a "choice" or the best way to explain it is, does the customer still just get "off the shelf" crap again in a "new" way to get it because it is internet based? I'm not sure people are also ready to pay for something that they wouldn't actually "own" i.e. a physical form of media to keep, sell or trade?

I dunno. But I would hate for MS to get their hands on it because we all know they would just use it to rape people in the end. I wouldn't even want Sony to own it, now Google...that sounds interesting. With their open source views and odd profit/payment structures with the possibility of some sort of ad based something or other covering the cost of fees probably (unlike MS would do).

It's anybody's game (so to speak) right now and we'll just have to wait and see as more info comes out and time goes on.

Umm...those 'cheap' Blu-ray players are just that -- slow, clunky, feature-lacking and non-upgradeable. Fine for just a simple BD player, though. The ones as capable/upgradeable as the PS3 are still $250-500+.

The PS3 is very far behind the Wii in all-time sales in Japan but it looks like PS3 is going to continue to beat Wii week-after-week over there from now on. Now they have to try to translate this success to the west, particularly in North America. That's going to be difficult so as long as the 360 has the better game library (metacritic.com). The PS1 and PS2 had the best selection of games in their respective gens. That's usually the key to winning a console war. Though Nintendo has managed to hit #1 despite the lack of third-party support because Wii is a hit with kids, families and women.

As for PS2 beating 360, what do you expect? The Japanese have warmed to American fast-food, iPods, Star Bucks, movies, music, Microsoft Windows, etc. but they won't warm up to the American game industry like the west has to the Japanese gaming industry no matter how many Japanese titles get released on an American console. In fact I'm shocked that 360's JRPGs have been selling better than PS3's JRPGs there so far. Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Star Ocean have all been selling better there than Valkyria Chronicles and Disgaea 3. The 360 must have a very hardcore JRPG fanbase over there to make that possible.

That's odd, since just a few weeks back, metacritic showed that the PS3 had 10-15% more games averaging 85% or higher than the 360 and about 25% more averaging 65% or higher. I guess it depends on who's writing the article, as on MOST sites, since "better game library" is a personal bias, not factually measurable.

From Metacritic. There is a higher number of top rated games on the 360. Average ratings for an entire console's library don't matter. You're not going to be buying the shovelware are you? Remember, the PS2 was absolutely loaded with shovelware, as with any other console in history that finished 1st place, but whose going to deny the strength of its library?

85+ 360 Games: 60
85+ PS3 Games: 44
85+ Wii Games: 18

The PC is the ultimate winner though with 257 + whatever top console games it can emulate. :D

Anyways I agree with you that critic ratings aren't gospel. It depends on subjective tastes. I don't pay as much attention to the scores as I do to a critic's write-up because sometimes the critic might dislike an aspect of the game that I might find enjoyable. These meta ratings though are indicators of what the average subjective rating of a game is so basically, the overall subjective perspective is that the 360 has a greater quantity of quality games than PS3 at the moment. And this is going to be to their advantage with core gamers while the Wii will continue to do well with casual gamers until they lose interest. The PS3 was too early with Blu Ray and that's cost them. If PS3 used dual layered DVDs like 360, the PS3 would have built on their PS2 momentum, grabbed the third party support and been king by now. They shouldn't have forced Blu Ray on their consumers. A blu ray player add-on for those who want it would be ok.

Statistics from the manufacturer themselves? Hilarious. Why not make it 25%? PS3 is just an expensive Blu-ray player.
