Hi.

I'am a PS3 user who suffered the problem of a dead blu ray drive, not once but twice with two different PS3's (60GB and 40GB CECHG01).

I've read all the "PS3 blu-ray drive dead" topic and I must say it has some useful information, but I still don't know many thing's on this problem, it's not like the RROD from the XBOX360, problem which causes are widely known (OK, a 40% failure rate gives a lot of info).

I would like to know (mostly confirm some ideas)...

Are the 20GB, 60GB and 80GB (and 40GB CECHG01)PS3's with the KEM-400AAA laser led more likely to fail because of the use of ONE LED and not two like all other PS3.

Which are the causes of the failure... Mine failed after playing PS2 game (MGS2 Substance). Too much use? Low quality diodes? Are newer diodes better than older ones?

What is exactly the problem? I opened both of my dead lenses and found nothing, no dust, no burned prism, nothing...

Is there any possibility to replace only the diode??

What are your opinions, how would you answer those questions.

Best Regards.

Cause is still largely unknown. We have noticed that the amount of BD drives dieing occurs around firmware updates, and during certain firmware versions and games. For example from the early 2.xx firmwares to 2.40 or so there were a lot of BD's dieing while playing cod4; just a coincidence because cod4 was a popular game at the time or because of its combination with some kind of flaw with the firmware we don't know; but the occurrences rapidly stopped around 2.40.

Sony has been largely quiet about this and really doesn't/wont say anything on what causes it or how to prevent it which leads me to believe it has something to do with a flaw in the design or firmware that they don't want to live up to.

These are just my observations anyway.
