i know the new 80GB doesn't support PS2 and the old one does through software emulation so why are we not able to use the emulation from the old one and put it on the new one

my only thinking behind why this wouldn't work is that it may be in the bios and not on the HD
im sure this has probly been tried before

i do not own a PS3 and am debating wether to get new or used (with PS2 compatibility) cause my old PS2 got stolen when i moved

The 60GB model was the one that was backwards compatible, however I think it was hardware emulation (an extra chip on the mobo) not software.

The 80GB lacks the Emotion Engine from the PS2, so part of the emulation is in software.
The 60GB has the Emotion Engine as well as the Graphics Sythisizer from the PS2, so it's mostly hardware emulation.

OK but according to some spanish dude, its possible to run PS2 games on a 40GB PS3 ( with no PS2 compatibility watsoever) when the PS3 is on SErvice/factory mode... there videos on youtube of different people doing the hack... and it seems to work , soo everyone is asking the 1 question now, how do you get ur PS3 to run in Service mode ? in service mode, the compatibility check mechanism is disabled to for some reason from what I think but still... how do we run in service mode ?... no1 nos... send it to sony saying its messed up, when it comes back hopefully its in service mode, like other people, tho the disadvantage is, you cant save or access the hard drive i think soo unlucky...tho someone might use the files ffrom service mode to make a custom firmware, ... theoretically, the PS3 40GB, can emulate the PS2 using software emulation, problem is that with the 40GB, there will be multiple bugs and some games would run slow, ohfcourse because the 40GB lacks the EE chip and GS chip... unlucky agen...thats what i think ultimately...the PS3 CPU should be able to booste performance of the PS2 emulation as it operates at 3.0GHz per core and it has either 7 or 8 cores which is impressive, aswell as graphics... but who knows, im probably wrong, im just speaking at the top of my head...- and alil addition, i think thats why sony disabled PS2 compatibility in the Retail 40GB models because games would run slow, or have multiple bugs etc... so they jus sed, right, screww PS2 emulation, PS1 emulation will be kept coz, aye, its extremely easy for the PS3 to emulate sooo, Yeahhh, thts what i think...
