great guide, got my wii softmodded to play wads...tried a backup but got an error code for disc read error. not tried via USB yet though.

what im wondering is, when i first installed the homebrew channel i had the homebrew browser. then when following next steps (formatting SD and putting new stuff on) the browser is gone.

how can i re-add the homebrew browser?

Codemii.com is the official site of the Homebrew Browser.

You can download the latest version 0.3.1 here http://www.codemii.com/download/

Once you extract you will have a folder called homebrew_browser.
Put that in your Apps folder on your SD card.

one last thing, is there a concrete fix to the -2011 error for wad installation?

this may be the root cause of it, but why doesnt ios 249 and instead 254 show up in wad manager. I have formatted the card and put the softmod pack on it but nothing. Ive found people with the same problem elsewhere

thank you larry for the help, i was not able to fix the problem here, but after searching around i decided t post on yafaze.com about the problem.

The actual cause of the problem is quite stupid.

The most common cause of the screen is if there is a gamecube memory card in the wii when you load the channel.

so just for future referance if anyone else has that problem just unplug your gamecube memory cards. after it loads u cant put them right back in.

I have updated the guide to cIOS38_rev13. Hoever after updating the guide I have found out that there seems to be some bugs in this revision. Punch Out! will give #002 error with USB loaders. I have no idea if other games are effected.

I have gone back to cIOS38_rev12 and if anyone else wants to they can download it HERE. Just extract and drag the folder to your apps folder on the SD Card and run the installer via Homebrew Channel.

UPDATE: the newest USB Loader GX rev453 fixes the #002 error when using cIOS38_rev13.

I have also updated the guide to use the forwarder that USB Loader GX uses.

The reason I changed this was due to the update option that USB Loader GX has. The directory to update is usbloader_gx. The old forwarder used the directory of usbloader.

If you want to keep the old forwarder then go to the GX settings and change the update directory from SD://apps/usbloader_gx/ to SD://apps/usbloader/ for the application to find the proper directory of the dol file.

Those that want to use the new forwarder can delete the old forwarder and install the new one provided in the updated guide. Keep in mind you will need to rename the usbloader folder in the apps folder to usbloader_gx for the forwarder to link to the dol file of the application.

I got the stack dump the first time I ran it becuase I didn't turn off the Wii to reset everything (make sure you turn off the Wii and wait a few so the USB device can turn off also).

After I did that it worked.

that i didn't do. even when at rev12, it still stack dumped. gonna retry.

restart did the trick. but the only gripe i have is that i need the sd card in to use GX, unless there's a way to have it detect the FAT partition on my external and have it load from there. with 1.1s, it's just a list.

looks like i can keep 1.1s and rev13 after all. there's a rev13b out, which removes the 002 error check.

I have been waiting for a couple of days for the guide on how to update if you have already installed HBC (the link is broken, not sure if it is permanent). My girlfriend just got EA Active, so I am naturally forced to update (I know I could try to load it with BLG and block updates, but I have no doubt she would forget, and the rest would be history). I am currently on 3.3v1, and using Larry's guide have installed HBC and the BLG channel, the only other thing I have installed is cios 249 rev 10.

I am fully satisfied with my system right now, and wouldn't mind just updating to 3.4 if it is easier. All I need is to safely update without affecting the BLG channel so I can play Active, thanks for your help. I have read that without taking any steps I can use nintendo's 4.0 update and retain functionality (but I tend not to believe that).

Question: this is a great guide and all and it worked great for me. But I'm just blindly following steps in a guide.

Is there a place where I can read about what I am actually doing? Im just curious what all those IOSes mean (IOS35? IOS249?), what cIOS is, what IOS60patch actually patches, etc etc... Not really technical, but something that allows me to see the bigger picture and explains some Wii (hacking) basics so I kinda understand why things have to be done the way they are done.

When I use google I mostly find guides like this (but not as good ;-))and people with problems.

Thanks!

okay i have one last question..

after following all the steps to the very last IOS downgrader.

on my main disc screen it asks me to update for games such as punchout and animal crossing.

My question is, can i update them noe that everything is hacked?

i have little siblings and i let them play animal crossing on my wii.

i fear that if i cant they may accidently update it.

so is it safe to do iy and if it is what are the consequences?

Just run the update.

If anything you might have to run the IOS60patch and maybe run the IOS Downgrader again (I don't know if the update will update the IOS with trucha exploit block again or if patching them blocks them from being updated).

I ran the Animal Crossing update but not the Punch Out update (Because I don't own it yet...)

I don't know about Backup Launcher because I don't use it but USB Loader GX still works like a charm. *Knock on wood*

I don't use preloader but I heard that it blocks disc updates if you want to check into that.

Why not follow the guide instead of going off on your own. If you don't want to follow the guide then start a new thread with your issue.

hi larry.great guide and im about to softmod my wii.... one question, though. ive heard its good to have bootmii installed (its to prevent bricks, right?). what do you think? and if yes, at which step should i do it?

ps: just saw that not everybody can have bootmii (has to be on boot2,which is not a possibility for everyone). how can one know if it is possible to have bootmii in boot2?

Start a new thread or find one that covers bootmii. This guide dosen't cover it.
