Yes the BUL3g.wad installs a backup launcher to launch backup disc.

I also am unable to get RB/USB Peripherals working with the backup loader even after cIOS38_rev13b.
My Wii is both Softmodded, AND chipped. When i use the backup loader, no USB devices work, however using the default nintendo loader (therefore using my chip) the USB devices work.

The only way you can brick your Wii is if you are installing and update from another region. For example you're using a PAL system and install a NTSC update.

OK, I may have messed up. I already had Homebrew up and running with the 3.4U firmware. But the Backup Launcher wouldn't read my disk. So I searched and to my understanding it was because the cIOS I was using was outdated or something, The Homebrew channel said it was cIOS51. So I found this guide which said I needed to upgrade to 4.0 through the Nintendo servers, which I did. Now my problem is Homebrew doesn't work anymore. When I click on it it brings up the first screen asking if you want to start or go back to the menu. I start but then the screen just goes blank. The Wiimote turns off and it does nothing. So did I do a boo boo in updating? or do I just need to reinstall everything via bannerbomb and bootmii? Any help would be great.
Sorry but I think I accidentally posted in the older version of this guide also.

Did you run IOS60Patcher after updating to 4.0? Also I believe you need to install a new version of HBC in order for it to work with the 4.0 firmware. HBC needs to be 1.0.2 or higher.
Hope this helps.

I followed this guide without updating to 4.0 (still on 3.4E) and I am having problems seeing the disc covers. I added these manually to the SD card because I do not have a wifi connection.
I created a folder named 'images' in the SD root, and the HD loader is set to SD:/images/
Is it because I have not updated to 4.0, which is stopping me from seeing the disc covers??

Ok, don't I need Homebrew working before I can run the ISO60Patcher? As for the version of Homebrew I'm pretty sure its up to date. I installed it from the BootMii Installer from bootmii.org using Bannerbomb. If its not the latest then can I install the lastest with bannerbomb or do I need to use some other method?

If you installed the HBC that came with BootMii it should be fine. You should run the IOS60Patcher and see if that fixes things. If anything it won't screw anything up.

Are the image covers a factor of 4? If not then they will not show. Most popular cover downloads are 160x225 which will not show up in the loader because 225 is not a factor of 4. So you need to resize them to 160x224 or go HERE and change the size to 160x224 and download them manually.
There are packs available on this page HERE as well.

If you can't load the Homebrew Channel I would try installing it again with Bannerbomb and the Hackmii Installer. If that doesn't work I would try deleting the Homebrew Channel from the Channels section of Data Management in the Wii Settings.

OK, I did the softmod and everything seems great except I cannot play backups. When loading through Backup Loader I get the DVD Read Error (324) and if I try to load through Disc Channel (I can see the game banner) I get the Disc Error, remove disc blah blah. So, did I do something wrong or am I just using cheap media? I'm hoping it's just a media issue, but I'm unable to grab some new discs at the moment and can't try it out.
Also, is the USB loader better to use than trying to play from burned discs? I'm thinking that's the way I wanna go as soon as I can.

This guide is awesome. I got this all working. I am amazed that it took me 13 minutes to backup Guitar Hero Metallica onto the HDD. It took me nearly 4 hours to rip it about a month ago.

ahhh thanks Larrylje for pointing that one out. I downloaded the whole Pal pack from this site and it was defaulted as 160x225 :S

Thanks Larry for great instructions. They allowed me to mod my Wii prior to the 4.0 update. I'm sorry if this sounds like a newb question, but maybe you or someone here can help. Just worried about messing up/bricking my Wii.
Your instructions say:
IF YOUR WII IS 3.4 OR BELOW AND ALREADY SOFTMODED (with cIOS36_rev8 or higher and homebrew channel) ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS UPDATE TO 4.0 USING THE NINTENDO SERVERS (how you normaly would update). THEN INSTALL THE IOS60PATCH UNDER THE EXTRA STEPS SECTION! IF YOU WANT THE TRUCHA BUG FIXED THEN RUN IOS DOWNGRADER UNDER THE EXTRA STEPS SECTION!!
How do I know if I have cIOS36_rev8 or higher?

I'm trying to get USB Loader to work properly. I got it installed and it seemed to go fine. However, it keeps locking up on me. I got a game to install, but every time I restart USB Loader GX it has cleared my settings(including the unlock password). When I try to unlock it using the ab121b password it seems to work, but once again after going back into uloader it's all back to default settings. Also, if I try to clear out the password, the entire loader freezes and I have to hard reboot my wii. Any ideas where I may have gone wrong? I haven't notice anyone else having this happen, so I'm assuming it's me somehow.
Try deleting the config folder (delete the folder not what is inside) on the SD card to clear the settings and try loading it again.
@Oner
No I don't mind.
Outstanding!!! Worked correctly on the first time! Thanks much, and thanks for the great guides!
Guys, I'm having this same problem. I turn on my Wii & load the USBloader, pick a game & start it fine. Then, when I'm ready to play another game, I go to start it & it freezes. I have to hard start the Wii to bring back the loader & start the game.
I deleted the config folder completely the first time around & it worked fine. Now, when i check the SD card again, the config folder is back with 2 files inside. Do i have to keep on deleting the config folder everytime so it won't freeze?

try going back to cIOS38_rev12. i found out that rev13 and 13b would lock up when choosing a new game without turning off the system. i think rev12 is more stable.
ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure
got a whole lot more to list . . .

I've been reading around & that's what they're suggesting as well, to go back to cios rev12. Is the USBloader working on 13b for some & not for others? I don't get it.
Before going back to rev12, i want to make sure if that's the way to go.
