'PS3 Slim' is real, says new report

The oft-rumored 'Slim PS3' is back in the news today, this time being confirmed by sources talking to Arstechnica.
The undisclosed source says that the slimmed down PS3 unit is not rumor, but in fact real, and should hit stores in either August or September. The source also says the rumored PSP Go! is real too, and will be announced next week during the E3 event.

Agreed. For the money Sony are charging i'd expect it to look the absolute bollocks. Instead it looked (Assuming the "leaked" photos are real) tacky and pretty boring.
Therefore that over priced only good for bluray piece of, err, "hardware" isn't worth my hard earned cash just yet :)

There must be a catch to the Slim.
It can't be that slim and still have the same potential as the original PS3s.. Can it?

No it cant, expect less features for less money. lets just hope it isn't a flop like the PS2 slimline
Why was the PS2 slimline a flop? I thought it was good. The use of FMCB rendered the need for HDloader useless.

Technology quadruples every 2 years or something like that, having the same features of the original ps3 in a smaller form factor now is easily within grasp. In fact I'd go so far as to be curious about what they added.

the Slimline Was a flop, it was lacking from its big older brother it had less feature an was more cheaply built for only a 25 dollar difference.
the Older PS2 models starting at SCPH10001 ending in SCPH50001 where the best made well designed systems.
Ive owned 2 Slimline's both have been broken in less than a year. my launch console lasted 4 years till it was destroyed in a hurricane incident. I've since bought a used SCPH39001 and it is going strong for 3 years.
Slimmer is not better it leads to more issue's, they should just stick with current models and drop the price. if there reluctant to do that you think there going to add more features,yeah right we can always dream.
the PS3 slim is going to be a watered down version of its bigger brother.

I started noticing a decrease in laser efficiency on my SCPH-30001 about 1 1/2 year after I bought it. Basically it still read discs but it would take longer to load and would skip on scraches easily. It also stopped playing CD-RWs. In my opinion, the only consoles that suffered problems were the earliest PS2 models with the A/B revision lasers. The C revision lasers were fine but still not perfect. The slimline lasers were perfect as long as no additional mods were done to the system. I have never had a heat problem in my slimline PS2, I have run it for about 4 hours straight.

I had a slim that I played regularly for a year or so... Sometimes it would be left on for like 12 hours cause I would go somewhere and forget about the game I was playing. After being on for a while it would get pretty hot but never overheated or anything. I sold it though cause my friend sold me his FAT PS2 for $1 and Cogswap is simple and free. Slim needs sensors blocked...

I use FMCB. It's a whole lot easier than Cogswap and it works on any PS2 except the new 90000 models. Check it out if you haven't yet. It's amazing.

Why should it matter?
Who cares if it's real or fake?
This is free advertising through hype. Leak a story, x company deny it, leak a bit more info, x company deny it.
How many times have we seen this before?
All that should matter is does it cost less for end users, is there a change for the worse/better in functionality, like Sony's previous improvement of removing PS2 compatibility?

Removing B/C was no improvement in my opinion. If someone didn't have a PS2 or a broken PS2, the B/C for a library of games consisting of 500+ games is a huge selling point. I did not get a PS3 until I got my hands on the 80GB B/C model.

Well, people wanted cheaper, BWC just had to go. Maybe in the future when more materials are cheaper it could be back, but for now be happy with the current price as it was $100 more with BWC.

I agree but I'd prefer to have the media card readers back if I was to buy a PS3 again. I have used it countless times and the fact that its a multimedia system makes the media card readers important. The 2 extra USB ports are useless, 2 work fine. B/C should be free. With the power of the PS3, they could completly emulate B/C like the 360. Something is better than nothing.

Emulation would have cost very little but sony appeared at the time, beset on selling "working on the PS3", ps2 titles through the PSN, ever heard of double dipping?
This story being released and then denied is nothing more that fanning the flames to get free advertising & drum up business, it's all very transparent, & shows "x" company's deceitful nature to obtain capital through underhand tactics, by avoiding having to pay advertising fees.

incase no one noticed i think that those supposed leaked photos are actually just the top part of a normal ps3 with a couple of photoshops...im not that smart but thats what it looks like to me
