Hey guys I have been looking everywhere for information of xbox 360 mod chips and flashing.
I havent found any sort of wiki which explains the benefits and whatnot so I am just gonna throw out a few questions:
1. Whats the benefit of mod chips over flashing?
2. When wanting to do one of the above, what must I know about my xbox 360 beyond being an xbox 360 elite?
3. Is the xecuter 3 the best mod chip available?
4. Are there any simple ways to flash the xbox without opening the box?
Thanks, for the help. If there is a wiki with this sort of information please point me to it, I dont mid searching... I have been for about 3 days now.

Quote: 1. Whats the benefit of mod chips over flashing?
None. Flashing is superior.
Quote: 2. When wanting to do one of the above, what must I know about my xbox 360 beyond being an xbox 360 elite?
You need to figure out what type of DVD drive you have. Take off the face plate. There is a hole right below the "XBOX 360" on the DVD bezel. Shine a flash light in there and there will be 2 wires.
Yellow = Lite-ON
White = BenQ
Red & Black = Samsung
Plastic = Hitachi
Quote: 3. Is the xecuter 3 the best mod chip available?
Are you referring to the Team Xecuter that makes DVD connectivity kits. I believe they made mod chips for the original XBOX.
Quote: 4. Are there any simple ways to flash the xbox without opening the box?
No, you must open up the XBOX 360, and connect the DVD drive to your PC via a compatible S-ATA chipset.

Actually, firmware is available for all DVD drive types. The Lite-ON will take additional hardware. Please look at the hole under the face plate and post back.

okay I have 2 white wires, which means its the Benq.
This is great stuff.
As this is the first time I am doing this: should I just do it the right way and get the xecuter Blaster module? http://team-xecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46607
And, just to verify, should I get the unlocking tool I posted above?

Personally, I think the blaster is a waste of time. Firmware updates aren't as often as they used to be.
All you need is a very small flat head screwdriver like what is used for glasses to open the 360. There are some good tutorials around on how to open your XBOX 360. Fairly easy to do. I know homesick just made a good tutorial, but I don't have a link for it.

My laptop broke recently, and I am stuck using my fiance's macbook.
I can run xp through bootcamp, but I doubt I can connect to a SATA connection, has anyone done this with a mac before?
From what I understand, the blaster will allow me to use a USB instead of the SATA connection, which should let me use the macbook?

By the way leerage, thanks for the help.
In all honesty most of this stuff should be in a wiki somewhere. If theres any interest I would be glad to start one, and people can get answeres for most of these questions in one place that can be updated regularly

So in summary:
I have a BenQ dvd drive.
1. Using either an unlocking tool or a sufficiently small flathead screw driver remove the case from the xbox.
2. Using a Torx screw driver (need size 10?) remove the metal cover from the xbox.
3. after removing the dvd drive, connect it to the computer using a Sata-to-USB connector.
4. Use jungleflahser.com to complete the flash
5. Rebuild the xbox 360.
Meaning I will need:
Unlocking Tool/Flathead
Torx Screw Driver
Sata-to-USB connector
Anything else I need or is that the whole shebang?

I think you also need a Torx #8 for the smaller screws in the center of the metal plate covering the 360.

This is only necessary if you are removing the motherboard, not the drive.

Just to add if you remove the drive completely then how are you going to power it?
For Benq\Samsung\Hitachi, I leave the Drive in the console, and just connect the S-ATA to the PC, I run the power from the console, and ground the Xbox to my PC chassis.

you dont mess with the hard drive. perhaps you should really think twice about modding your 360s DVD DRIVE before you attempt to do this.

no. you either need to power the drive with the console itself, of with a ck3 unit.

why do you think you need a drive enclosure? and have you even read the tutorial for jungleflasher yet? i doubt it, because if you would have read it, you would know exactly what you need and how to flash your drive.
all you have to do is hook up your your drive to your computer (good luck on a mac) especially regarding getting the via 6421 chipset in a PCMIA card (if they make those for macs) as you are going to need that chipset to flash your benq. and follow the directions for jungleflasher.
