Can anyone help here, was playing PS3 this week and the fan was very loud, took no notice of this and played on,
Now i play my game for 30 mins and then it freezes and i cannot hear the fan at all!!!anyone know what thia problem is and how to fix it?
Sometimes, depending on how your PS3 is sitting and even what it's sitting on, you can burn up your fan motor.
For example, if you're PS3 is sitting on the "bottom" (the large flat side) on a glass or stone table (both of which hold heat really well), it'll burn up in a heartbeat.
Try placing your PS3 on something temporary, like a cardboard box on the floor, and be sure to set it on it's side (that way it's standing tall and has the Disk Slot at the top of the front side). This should allow for much better airflow and keep your PS3 away from things like Table Heat (because once a glass or stone table warms up, it's not cooling off untill the system is turned off).
If that doesn't solve your problem, then tragically, you've burned up your fan motor, and you may want to claim on your Warranty (if you still have one). If you don't have a warranty and are willing to risk the safety of your PS3, you can order a replacement fan assembly online and either try installing it yourself or having someone more experienced "take a whack at it".
Please post your findings here, that way others can learn from them.

I'm really not convinced that it's cooler horizontally, considering that all my experience dictates sharply otherwise, but there are other factors that could play a role in this as well, such as room temperature and what it is sitting on.
Going further in that, most of the posts in that thread state that there are many other factors that go into effect determining temperature. Furthermore still, having the vented side stand up vertically, allows a lot of the heat to rise out the top of the system (heat that would otherwise have been beyond the circulation of the fan).

Update: And while re-sizing, I added a hint of tint (that's fun to say) to my glasses. Sweet. lol

Don't you think it is a little ironic that you are asking him to reduce his signature size when yours is clearly over the limit too? Especially after a moderator had asked you to reduce the size of your signature.
Back to the topic, it is best to keep the PS3 in a well ventilated area to stop it from over heating. Also check the fans to see if they have been clogged up with dust.
I don't personally use one, but I can say that I've heard good things. Supposedly, on some really high detail games, external cooling can be the difference between gaming and freezing.
