I just finished with the steps from larry's guide. I go to the website to download a theme (Street Fighter or Transformers). I use MyMenu and I get FTP errors. sometimes it says script error. Do I change the .zip/rar to .mym while i'm about to save to pc or change it after I save.

This guide is for PAL & NTSC(USA) 4.0 softmoded systems only (NOT for 3.4 or below firmware or JAP/KOR systems).

Doing this can brick your system if you do not do things properly.

Before doing any changes to the Wii System Menu make sure you either have Bootmii (installed to Boot2) or Preloader .29 installed or both!

I have both BootMii and Preloader installed and have bricked a few times when trying to edit my own theme. But with the help of Preloader .29 mainly I have always been able to recover.

You can go HERE for a Boot Mii install guide. If you get BootMii installed to boot2 make sure you do a nand backup.

We will install preloader .29 below.

I know there are other ways to do this but I will stick to what I know.

Lets get started...

FILE & FOLDER SETUP:

Download this ThemePack HERE.

Extract and transfer all the folder and files INSIDE the SD Root folder to your SD card root.

There are 2 hack.ini files in this pack. One for PAL and one for NTSC-U (USA). Rename the corresponding region file of your system to hack.ini then delete the other region hack file from the SD Card.

EXAMPLE:

If you have a NTSC(USA) system rename the NTSC-U_hacks.ini file to hacks.ini and delete the PAL_hacks.ini from the SD Card.

If you have a PAL system rename the PAL_hacks.ini file to hacks.ini and delete the NTSC-U_hacks.ini from the SD Card.

STEP 1: Run Preloader .29 Installer (Launch it using HBC).

Press 1 after you start it and Preloader will install.

It should restart and boot into the Preloader menu. If it doesn?t then turn off your system and turn it back on holding down the reset button.

When the menu comes up go down to ?settings? and change the Auto Boot: setting to ?SystemMenu?. Then go down to ?Save Settings? and save the settings.

After the settings have been saved press B on the Wiimote to get back to the Main Menu. Then go to the top of the Main Menu and boot to System Menu.

STEP 2: Run SoftMii NAND Dumper (Launch it using HBC).

This is really not a NAND dumper but we will use this to backup the original Wii System theme in case you need to recover from a theme brick or you want to revert back to the normal menu theme.

After running the application you will get a list of directories. You will need to go to...

FOR NTSC (USA):
TITLE then to 00000001 then to 00000002 then to content the to 00000072.APP once at 00000072.APP press plus (+) on the Wiimote to back it up.

FOR PAL:TITLE then to 00000001 then to 00000002 then to content the to 00000075.APP once at 00000075.APP press plus (+) on the Wiimote to back it up.

There is a small bug in SoftMii NAND Dumper when trying to select the 00000002 directory. All I do is keep pressing up a few times until it shows the 00000002 directory. I know this can be a pain but I don't know of another way to fix this bug.

After you backup the corresponding region .app file transfer it to your PC for safe keeping.

STEP3: Changing the theme.

Go back to the ThemePack download that you downloaded at the start. Now run the Setup MyMenu 1.2 application on your PC.

This application will merge a theme.mym file together with your original 00000072.APP/00000075.APP file.

You can download theme.mym files from HERE. Make sure you choose a 4.0 theme or Any Wii theme (do not use 3.2 themes).

The theme you choose to download will be in a compressed archive (rar/zip). Do not extract the file. You want to change the .rar or .zip extension to .mym

Example: WinXP.rar you would change it to WinXP.mym

Now make a COPY (do not cut or drag) of the original 00000072.APP/00000075.APP file to the same directory as the theme.mym file.

Once you have the theme.mym and a copy of the original 00000072.APP/00000075.APP in the same directory run MyMenu!

For SOURCE: Browse to the 00000072.APP/00000075.APP file
For MyM FILE: Browse to the theme.mym file

After you load both files select Create MyMenu! This will unpack then merge and repack the 2 files together. After it is finished it will pop up a save dialog box. Just name the newly create file to whatever you want.

Now drag that newly created file to the Softmii folder on the SD Card. Rename it to...

For NTSC(USA)
00000072.APP

For PAL
00000075.APP

After you rename it start the Homebrew Channel. Then run Softmii Tweak Toy. When the application boots you should see the 00000072.APP or 00000075.APP in the list. Just press A and it will install the theme. After it finishes press HOME on the Wiimote to boot to your new theme.

If you get a system files are corupt message or the Wii Menu does not load after changing a theme then you did something wrong. To fix this you need to place the orignal backup .app file into the Softmii folder on the SD Card. With the Wii System off turn it on and hold down the reset button. This should bring up the Preloader menu. Go to Homebrew Channel in the Preloader menu. Now go to Softmii Tweak Toy and install the origanl backup .app file. You should now be back to the normal menu.

first of all, thankyou Larry for your wonderful guides, they are a blessing.

now one quick question before i proceed in tweaking my sys menu.
im running on firmware 4.0u and im trying to do the softmii nand backup. i go to title - 0000001- 0000002- content- and all i can see is 0000002d.app there is no 00000072.app should i proceed??
im just checking with you because im not into Bricking my wii. lol
thankyou very much

Read the guide fully.

It says in red...

So make sure at the top your at the proper 00000001- 00000002 directory. If you don't see 00000075.APP file then your probably not at the 0000002 directory.

I want to install bootmii as boot2 but am unable too. I only have the ISO option. I understand I can still back up my NAND but if I was to brick the Wii I couldn't reboot to restore.
(4.0U softmod rev13a)

1) Why backup if you can?t reboot a bricked system?

2) Is there any other way of hack to install it as Boot2?

3) Is it safe to turn Wii24 on and play online, internet channel, updates ect..?

4) Is there anything else to look out for if I'm unable to boot2 and backup?

Thanks

from what I understand about bootmii, is that as lonas bootmii is installed as the IOS and you didn't delete it, as long as you have the config file on your sd card, you should be able to recover.
2) Is there any other way of hack to install it as Boot2?
there is no other way to install anything to boot2. TT worked really hard on making it work but were not sucessful
3) Is it safe to turn Wii24 on and play online, internet channel, updates ect..?
I have every type of mod available and still play online, I've updated to 4.0, still use the shop channel, and play excite bots online. Don't know about wii connect but it should work as long as your not installing IOS's or system menu wads
4) Is there anything else to look out for if I'm unable to boot2 and backup?
Make sure you don't have a Wii that hasa serial number that starts with LU64 or LU65, there have been some issues with certain hacks that could render the Wii completely inoperable
Thanks

Bootmii is booted from the HBC if you installed it as an IOS. So if your system bricks then there is no way to launch HBC to then run Bootmii. If you have a NAND backup (using Bootmii installed to IOS) you can recover the system by finding someone that has a programmer that can desolder the NAND chip from the Wii and reprogram it with your NAND backup.

If you can only install Bootmii as an IOS then you should also use Preloader .29 which can recover most brick issues.

so far preloader has not saved me from any bricks, I consider it a dangerous application because it gives you a false sense of security. Most bricks from themes cannot be recovered by preloader, especially if it involves loading the wrong menu version.

I think I have installed bootmii as in ISO (it said I had) but I can't find anything different. I also don't seem to be able to install the preloader, Its an app so it goet through the HBC right? If you could point me in the right direction here that'd be great, thanks Larry

HAHAHA @ A dangerous application.

Are you kidding me? If you have it installed properly and know what your doing then it should recover from most any brick besides from a system menu update brick due to the system menu will overwrite Preloader.

I have been saved numerous times with Preloader when creating my own theme.

It should also let you at least boot into Preloader even if you did install a wrong version theme. Then from there recover the system.

Yes you launch the Preloader installer from the HBC. You also need a proper hacks.ini file at the root of the SD card. Do a search on Preloader and read up on it.

I'm just warning people who think preloader will save them 100% of the time. I've seen a minimum of at least 50 posts about how preloader either bricked or didn't save them from a brick. that's why most people put the themes in mym format now.

I see so many people brick from installing the wrong theme, just giving a warning, preloader is not 100% effective.

I know what I'm doing, most people doing this won't though. When they brick and preloader doesn't load,

Your not very smart to screw with themes with preloader not installed. Hopefully you at least have Bootmii installed as boot2 in case you brick.

As for preloader effecting the Wii boot time I have no idea what your talking about. I have mine set to boot straight to Wii system menu and it loads perfectly fine without any lag or waiting time.

Those that read this guys post should ignore the ignorance and install preloader if your messing with your themes.

as one of the main contributer to 2 major sites, I would say I know who made preloader and how it works. When working with themes if one file is not right, it could delete preloader right off, bootmii is the prefered way to go. And that's coming from more than just me, anyone who creates a theme prefers bootmii to preloader.
