I seem to have a problem when following this guide. I press up several times until I see the marker to the left of 00000002, but when I select it, it shows the directory as title/00000001/0000001f.
..but when I hit up three times from where the marker originally starts and hit A, my directory is title/00000001/00000002, but when I enter content, my only options of app files are 0000007c.app, ticket, 1000007c.app, title.tnd, 0000007b.app, and 0000007a.app.
Selecting 00000001 after title works, but no matter which directory I click on after that, it doesn't go to the correct directory. Should I just search through them all until I find 00000072.app?
Well, after searching through every directory in 00000001, there is not one that contains 00000072.app. =\
Do you know what could be wrong here?

the easiest way to get a .app for any system menu is NUS downloader.
1.Just run it and find the system menu you want,
2.create the .wad
3.extract it with wadunpacker
4.find the 00000001.app and rename it your 00000072.app(or whatever you got)
System Menu 3.2
JAP = 0000000100000002 v288
USA = 0000000100000002 v289
EUR = 0000000100000002 v290
System Menu 4.0
JAP = 0000000100000002 v416
USA = 0000000100000002 v417
EUR = 0000000100000002 v418
this also works for IOS's as well.
the safest way to use themes is waninkoko's sd/usb theme loader
This is an app that Waninkoko created
What you need
Cios rev14
Sd/USB device
Menu patcher 1.2
How to use
create the folder directory
/title/00000001/00000002/content
copy your custom system menu .app(like .00000042.app) into the content folder
rename the app to 00000001.app
no risk of brick because you're not altering your system menu

any1 here reading this it is extremely important to have preloader installed incase u get a brick like me if u don't like the fact that the wii takes longer to load like me disable the auto boot and just hit a at the preloader menu wen u play the wii if u get a brick you can boot to the homebrew channel and use any region changer that will definitely fix any bricks

I specifically mentioned I already tried that. 00000072.app isn't in any folder. I searched every single one in the /title/00000001 directory. The mentioned file is no where to be found in that directory.

If your on 4.0U firmware then it is there. You need to make sure it says in the top right hand corner /title/00000001/00000002/ to find it. As for getting to that directory you just have to keep doing it until the directory says what I placed above.
