I'm not sure exactly how to explain this, but I'll try my best. Let me know if anything doesn't make sense.

I use HDMI to hook up my PS3 to my 1080p monitor. Before that, it was hooked up to a 1080i TV. Whenever I play PS2 games, though, there's a border around the game screen, as if the PS3 hasn't upscaled it as much as it could. In other words, the black border seems like it's part of the game screen itself.

Does anyone else have this problem with their PS3? Their PS2 games not reaching from one corner of the screen to the other?

About the closest comparison I can make is when watching SD videos on an HDTV. It's like setting the aspect ratio to "1:1" and having a black border around the entire video frame.

Anyway. Any input would be grand. Thanks a lot, aD.

Do you have (Up Scaling) Set to (Normal). That will have black bars around it.

I think the other up scaler is wide screen or full screen. I think this one stretches the picture out of the normal Aspect Ratio.

A 1080P monitor will show you more of the total image than a 1080P TV, as TVs usually cut off the picture on all four sides. Your old TV was 1080i, which is about the same as 720P, so that would explain why the difference is so much more noticeable. Play with the upscaling until you find something you like.

glassd, I get the borders on both Fullscreen and Normal upscaling. On Normal, it looks like any other 4:3 game letterboxed into a 16:9 screen... except there are border on top, too. Fullscreen upscaling stretches it to 16:9, of course, but... again, there's still a little bit of black border around the image.

And KillberBug, I should've mentioned this before, but I got the border issue even on my 1080i TV screen. It's not a big problem at all, and I figure it probably does have to do with seeing the "full image," as you were saying. I just thought it was kind of odd, because whenever I see PS3s running PS2 games on Youtube, they're not getting this kind of border issue.

I dunno. Maybe it has to do with the cables I'm using or something.

I was kind of an early adoptor of HDTV. I have a 720P 40". I'm not sure what correct upscaling should look like on a 1080P. I do know that Up-Scaling should be set to normal.

The best that i can remember, there is an Up Scaling setting for DVD's and another Optional Setting for PS2 Up Scaling. Make sure that you have both of them selected for Normal. I might have dreamed this.

On my HDTV, it fills the screen Verticaly but has Black bars on the Left and Right. I dont like Full Screen as it stretches the Picture. I have played with the HDTV settings as well to Zoom and such but dont like it as you loose part of the Picture. Your using a HDMI cable so that would not have anything to do with it.

That was a nice read-up on the history of the AR, but that isn't exactly what my problem is. Here's what's bugging me:

Widescreen games (Ace Combat, God of War, etc.):

4:3 games (Soul Calibur II, Max Payne, etc.):

As you can see, there are borders on both the top and the bottom. It happens on both my 1080i TV and my 1080p monitor.

?????
When i get home tonight, i will try out God of War again and see what it looks like. I'll get my PS3 Up-Scaling settings if it fills my screen.

Brain Fart, i have a 720p, comparisons wont do any good..

With the HDTV set to make no adjustments and the PS3 > PS2 up scaler set to normal; My picture looks like your second pic except mine fills the screen Verticaly but with bars on the side when the game source is 4:3 aspect ratio. When the game source is 16:9 (Cut sceens), it looks just like your first pic with bars all around. This is on a 60gig PS3. I was not impressed with the quality of the Picture. Looked much better when not Up Scaled. I guess this did not help you any. Sorry.

I know yours is. I'm trying to figure out why MINE isn't like that. I know that's the way 4:3 games are supposed to look like.

Those cutscenes don't have a 16:9 aspect ratio - they don't measure 854x480 or whatever. They're regular 4:3 frames (640x480) where the top and bottom are simply black, that's all.

But I understand what you mean. What I'm experiencing is different from that. Thanks again.
