Thanks.
Yep, that is a completely valid assumption.

If your drive will not play backups, one of two things happened -- either you flashed the drive with the wrong firmware (original instead of iXtreme) or your laser is not strong enough to read backup discs. To ensure against #2, use Verbatim discs for their superior readability for your burner.

I wouldn't worry about backups not working, however.

Also, a word of advice. Making your own rips is definitely the safest and most ethical way of using your new firmware. However, it does require special equipment (a drive flashed with Kreon or 0800 firmware, or a regular DVD drive that is physically modified), and special knowledge. ABGX is very, very good assurance that the rip of the game you are playing is safe, no matter what the source of it was. While I would never, ever, eeevveerrrr advocate piracy, of course, you could potentially have 10 games downloaded by the time you learned to rip 1, for much less of a price tag.
I have an SH-D162D flashed with Kreon V1.0 :)

I have 2 different dual layer burners...one is a TSSC drive and the other a Sony. Is there one brand that would be recommended over the other for backups?

In that case, you have a sweet setup indeed!

Either drive should work fine. If you want to get really technical about it, you can burn discs in both drives and then run the discs through error-detection programs to see which gives fewer errors.

Just burn the disc at whatever speed it's rated at and you'll be golden.

Thanks, I tried to prepare the stage for everything I might need before I started this project. I'm good on the hardware side...I just have to dive deeper into the software side. It's confusing with so many outdated tutorials out there.

I think I will try out both drives and test the discs, that sounds like a great idea. I have my Verbatim DVD+R DLs at 8x. I tried running ABGX on a backup of Guitar Hero 3 I made to test...but I'm still learning all about it.

Tray half open?

Removed lots from previous quotes to avoid spamming :) yeah tray half open, basically I did this 1 or 2 times before this kinda drive,
its
A) switch on tray half open (got CK)
B) open JF 0.1.66b
C) Click LO83info
D) Press OK
E) Nowhere when it tells u to open tray fully and click ok I tried

1) Manually pulluing out tray, 2) Ejecting button, 3) Eject button twice (tray goes in a out) and also Power Cycling (Although on the JF tutorial it says you will get a bad flash) but I tired every way to get something different from >> LO83info extraction Failed! <<

:S totally stuck :S

I am running into the 00000000 problem as mentioned by a few people above. I have the july 2009 model not august. Has anyone had any success with the july model? I have been using the xecuter ck3 pro power connector with the instructions from the jungleflasher pdf. I have not tried doing the half-open tray manually yet, but I'm guessing it *should* have worked with the ck3. I'm going to give manual a try later today.

Anyone have any suggestions?

If you mean ck3 as in the probe, then no, the ck3 probe will not work with an 83850 model Lite-On. You can only grab the key via SATA cable.

I have not personally flashed one of these drives, but a few people in the thread have reported success with them.

Seems to me like the half-open position of the tray needs to be just right. If it is anything like the other Lite-Ons, I believe it needs to be 51% pushed in... if that makes sense. In other words, more closed than open.

Also, here's a link to a thread that recommends using a USB flash drive to boot into DOS and using the Dosflash program when having problems dumping the key from an 83850 drive:

no im only using the ck3 to power the drive via one of my pc's power cables, so I don't have to use the 360 to power it. It also has controls for the drive so i can eject it and stuff.

I've read a few people have had success with it. Really it's more of a convenience thing.

I'm going to give it a few more tries in windows trying to get it at 51%, and then try the dos method you mentioned in the post. Though I mean how precise does this have to be, I haven't been paying that much attention to *precisely* get it at 50 or 51%.

In my experience, it doesn't have to be exactly precise. By 51% I mean somewhere around 50-60 % pushed into the drive. In other words, just slightly more into the drive than out of it.

Definitely try that DOS method. It seems pretty definitive, if that thread is any indication.

Tried the DOS method... ran into some problems. One is the communication with the drive. Seems something was wrong when I ran dosflash it saw my drive but could not communicate with it.

When I ran lo83, it *seemed* like it worked, but there was no difference in the initial output... up to 0060 there were all 00s. It outputted a file though, which decrypted with freekey gave me that 14 0F 0F ... key that is invalid. OpenKey tells me that the key is invalid.

So regardless, it seems like the output was the same in FreeDos. I'm going to give it another shot using this method and see what communication error I was getting on that SATA port. I have some doubts that it's my mobo's chipset because I was able to successfully flash a hitachi yesterday.

In that thread there are instructions that say that you must have the drive powered off and then power it on right before you press enter on the 'dosflash' command. Did you make sure to do that?

Wish I could be of more help... I will help you brainstorm, at least.

Heh, I appreciate the help anyway.

So yeah I followed the guy's instructions exactly, it looks like I'm one of the unlucky ones with a July model that can't have it's key extracted. I'm thinking I might return it and try my luck with an older bundle. I got a holiday bundle so it's no surprise that it's got a newer dvdrom in it.

That sucks. Sorry to hear that. I think you have a good plan going.

You could always get a separate DVD drive off of the internet and spoof it as a Lite-On. BenQs are crazy easy to flash.

Hey atulai, I ran into the same exact situation. If you read a few posts above you can see what I did when I returned my 360...the second console, although labeled august 2009 flashed without a hitch. Same bundle...etc.

Freaky...

I am hoping these non-flashing drives are just a coincidence. Somehow I am doubting it, unfortunately.

I wonder WTF MS is doing to these drives to make flashes not take...

@qwert99 Doesn't the drive need to have the same key as my current one for me to spoof it? And my main problem is I can't get the key, otherwise I would have been able to flash it. Either way I'm not too worried about it. I'm prolly going to go exchange it for a regular arcade bundle. Save myself $100 since I already have a HDD, so I really don't need the elite. I'm willing to be that their arcade bundles have been sitting on the floor for a while, so *hopefully* that will increase my chances of getting a unit that I can dump the key out of, lol.

@MrGreaser Yeah, I've read your situation. I dunno if I want to risk it going for the same bundle, and I've already packed mine up (the one thing I did not try was doing the manual tray open) and I am too lazy to change my mind now. I wonder what I'll be getting next... lol.

LOL, So I just got my elite exchanged for an arcade bundle. Checked the drive right away, and it's another Lite-ON, LOL. I'm at work atm so I gotta wait a few hours before I can try to flash it.

*EDIT*

OH S*** It's an Aug 09 Lite-ON too. Though I am thoroughly excited as I am not running into the zeros problem with this one. WOO~

For this one I did the following, not sure if I had done this exact thing on the other one:

1) Connect drive to PC while PC is off, using regular SATA cable connected to master port, and the CK3 connector for power.

2) CK3 Connector is OFF. Power the computer on with the Ultimate Boot Disk inside, and a flash drive with lo83info.exe and dosflash.exe on it.

3) Boot from Ultimate Boot Disk, and go to FreeDOS.

4) Navigate to my flash drive, turn ON the CK3 connector.

5) Run dosflash.exe. It should pause at the Lite-ON port and tell you some BS about not being able to get the Vendor, all you want here is the port that this drive is on, mine was at 0x0170.

6) Run lo83info.exe with the port as the first parameter:
C:> lo83info.exe 0170

7) It will tell you to put the tray in half-way mode. I did this as kinda like a combination of all the methods outlined.
7a) Press the Eject button on the CK3 to open the tray.
7b) Press the Eject button again but then quickly TURN OFF the CK3 connector. The drive should only have moved about 30%.
7c) Move the drive bay in some more so that it's about halfway in.
7d) Turn the CK3 connector ON.
7e) Press ENTER. It will then show you some dots and then tell you to fully open the tray.
7f) Press the Eject button on the CK3 connector, the tray should open fully.
7g) Press ENTER. You should now get your output.

8) Hopefully, you can see enough lines to at least see line 060. Previously mine had all 00000s. Now, it has a bunch of hex values. Which usually means good news.

9) Restart and use openkey or freekey on the bin file generated on your flash drive.

This also works with JungleFlasher on Vista x86... so it was definitely not my SATA drivers. I have a Gigabyte GA-EX58 with a ICH10R Chipset so you don't have to get a VIA card if you have this mobo, you might have to play around with which SATA port you connect it to.

Does the drive perform all of it's basic functions (like ejecting the tray)? You might also want to check to make sure you're using the same SATA port as before.

Might also want to do what leerage suggests here:

@ bludd:

Download and use Dosflash32. I had the same problem yesterday and it responded immediately to Dosflash32.

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

You don't need the probe to dump the key from your drive.
