Hi Friends,
I am a newbie at this. I got one PS2 as a gift today, details below:
Console : SCPH 90004
Browser : 1.40
CD Player : 2.00
Playstation Driver - 2.00
DVD Player - 3.11E
Sony is selling the UK model in India.
I researched this forum to an extent. I am in India, and can not get a SwapMagic disk here. I also don't want to screw up my warranty so soon by installing a mod chip.
Is there any other way to play downloaded games from torrents on my PS2 without a swapmagic and without voiding my warranty?
The reason I don't want swapmagic is because there is no option to get it in India.
All help would be really appreciated.

You need to look on the bottom and see what the 'Date Code' is.
If its 8B, then you can have someone in your area install fmcb 1.8 for you.
It its 8C, it depends, as Sony Changed the Bios in some of these.
Anything after 8C, fmcb will not work.
So then your only option is a modchip or Swap Magic.

The date code at the bottom of my unit is 9B.
I guess the 8x were from 2008.
Are there no FMCB for the new units being rolled out by Sony?

Has anybody tried hacking the 9b models of SCPH 90004?
What is the best option, if I want to play downloaded games from an USB drive?
Can you suggest in detail, since I am a newbie to this thing as of now.

There is no softmodding of those Models after 8c, as I said.
Sony changed the Bios in them.
So in order for you too play even from a USB drive, you need to purchase USBExtreme disc, Swap Magic or put a mod chip in.
That is all you can do, unless you buy a different PS2.
Swap Magic is only sold online, so why can't you get it living in India.

While to prospect of playing games off of a USB hard drive is appealing, most games won't run at all, and the rest will run very slowly. If you want to run games from a hard drive, get a fat unit with a network adapter or a 7xxxx unit with XCM HDconnect.
