Here's a link with pics to a (pretty ghetto) home-made spear:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=668247

"Tray half open" just refers to keeping the tray of the DVD drive half open when you do the mod. It is sometimes required and takes about 1 second to do, with no specialized tools or knowledge.

Since I haven't soldered anything in years, I don't wanna risk doing anything. It almost seems worth it to buy the $20 probe. I'm gonna search around for one that plugs into a USB so I still don't have to buy a connection kit. If that is possible?

Yeah, the spear is required for most Lite-Ons. The Connect kit is not a requirement for any drive.

Without the connector kit, how would I keep the tray half open and powered on through the 360? I understand that you can do this by unplugging the power cable from the machine when its opening, but how do you keep it powered on so you can flash?

Once you remove power from the drive, it registers the drive as being open. When you power it back up, it will stay in position. If that fails, you can use a paperclip to manually open the drive tray.

The only power source you need is the 360 itself.

So I decided on getting the Maximus 360 USB Xtractor, since it looks like the easiest and safest way to get the key files. Gonna use the Tutorial from Jungle Flasher themselves. Thanks for all the help!!!

The one benefit of the CK3, as I understand it, is that it can put your drive into mode B physically.
this is just in case of a Hitachi drive, in my opinion the connectivitykit is just a masterpiece. ie. it will provide your optical drive of electricity and you won't need to use the 360, because it will flag the connection with SATA has been lost ..

This is all what I understand from reading about the CK3, since I don't feel like it's worth it to have one myself.
again, a misleading statement that comes from an ignorant person who is obvious contradicting his own ..

My pleasure to help such a competent forum member. Good luck with your ventures in the land of modding. Although you obviously won't need luck, since you are doing this much research and fact-checking beforehand.

If I'm correct, it shouldn't matter because USB is almost like universal, every PC has a usb port. You will just need to go to the website (if you bought usbxtractor got to theirs or ck kit) and then look for drivers.

I can't speak from personal experience, but the Xtractor USB tool should be fine without using a serial cable.

Although the data being sent from the drive is serial data, I guess that spear has a built-in serial-->USB adapter or something.

It obviously isn't your first language either, Shakespeare.

Also you misspelt the ellipsis, they have 3 dots, not two... you clearly missed that point your English teacher was "tryin'" to explain.

ATTENTION:
We recommend NOT USING the 360Xtractor Pro with the latest Lite-on drive model DG-16dD2S with firmware 83850c!
You may damage your drive since this is a new drive that is now just coming out are not fully tested and supported yet!

I wouldn't use the xtractor pro for any of the new liteon's (if you have one).

I think the 83850 Lite-Ons don't require a spear at all?

The only support you need for the 83850c Lite-On is a SATA cable. The spear is unnecessary. So you don't need any extra thing at all.

You will just pay money for something to provide power to your drive, which your 360 will happily do.
