My xbox elite took a dump seemed to me because of the abuse of playing rock band, and falling over a couple of times. The xbox stopped loading games, The game disk that was in was scratched badly,I figured the dvd drive went bad so got another, put it in and it still wont load game disks says "to play game put in xbox console", Dashboard works i can access the hard drive and play demos Even the dvd drive works with movie disks. I have sent an inquery to xbox about the message and have not heard back i emailed them two weeks ago, anyone out there know what to do.

you'll need to move the little control board from your old drive to your new one, I think you might need to spoof if as well but I'm not that clued up on this one mate.

Do you still have your original drive? You will need to dump the dvd key of the old drive and flash it to the new drive. What type of drive was the original?

If the drive is the exact same, which it should be, you can just replace lasers in the drive. Most of the time though cleaning the laser of your old drive will work, especially if its BenQ

I believe I got one of those laying around. I'll post up a picture tomorrow. Out of curiosity, did you plug in the power cable the right way and the SATA cable in tightly?

I have got them in, I can hear noise like power is going through and i can feel vibration, Thank you for helping... I usually am sucessful in my tinkering, I broke a screen on a laptop I bought an other laptop on ebay thinking i could get one working, it came as advertised with no hard drive, ram, batery, power cord, cd drive, all the parts were compatable except the mother boards, turns out that was broke on other one. another hit to my mechanical self esteam. If I can get this xbox fixed some of it might be restored. Thank You for helping.

I wish I had recieved your advise about just changing the laser before i cut all the wires and buggered it up. i should have at least taken a picture before hand. It might just be I killed the drive with power going in reverse. There is four white wires two on each side of drive if i crossed them i think the motor that operates the opening function wont work. I should have been more careful thats clear to me now, Thank You for your help.

I took mine apart and this is how the wires go:
I'm holding the drive so that the board is in the back, motor in the front.
SET 1: Black|Red|White (Spindle motor, spins disc)
SET 2: White|White (Goes to front switch thing next to motor on left.)
SET 3: Red|Black (Eject motor, you probably have these reversed)
SET 4: White|White (To switch on right)
Let me know if you need pictures.
