A few noob questions about flashing drive

Hey guys,
I am just trying to learn a bit about flashing drives right now. I am pretty new to it, but I love to learn this stuff myself. I have a fairly good aptitude for picking this stuff up so maybe someone can just shed some light on the subject for me.
Okay, first of all, I am a little confused if I can flash the 360 drive itself, out of the xbox, or if I have to have the xbox running to the PC as well. My purpose is only for backups, and I have an old drive from my last drive, its a Samsung MS28. I have an Intel ICH7 SATA controller on-board on my PC already, so was wondering if I can just do the VCC method for flashing this drive. Problem is, even if this is possible, I don't know where I can find a decent tutorial that not over a year old, that contains pics, without broken links and whatnot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing that needs to be running to the PC is the SATA cable from the 360's DVD drive. You can use the 360 to power the DVD drive when you plug your SATA cable from your 360 to your PC.
As long as you have on-board SATA, you should be alright.
I recommend using Jungle Flasher and the Jungle Flasher tutorial.
You can find it at http://www.jungleflasher.net -- the tutorial is contained within the download of the program. You will need to download the latest firmware separately. This can be acquired from a site called Xbins ( http://www.xbins.org ). The latest version is 1.6 for all drives except for Hitachi drives, for which 1.51 is the latest.

i always flash mine and other consoles using the dvd drive
plug and non off us got banned

No, the connection for a Xbox 360 is not the same as a Molex plug.

VCC method is not needed these days. The software does everything for you, including putting the DVD drive into mode B. It's pretty sweet. And no, you can't power it through the PC...unless you get crafty and make an adapter, which is unnecessary.

Yep, you and most others, including myself. It's just another one of those internet 360 myths that some people can't get away from because they need rules so badly. Sort of like the 'burn at 2.4x' myth.

Haha. My burner is so old that I have to burn at 2.4x or below. There is no other option. Waiting 45 minutes for a burn is horrible, and the 360 doesn't always like it, either. Just like yourself.
I really need to upgrade. It's just so hard to get rid of something that still works, even if it is like 10 years old...

If the disks do not work when burnt above 2.4x then Verbatim would not have rated them at 8x.

the purpose of my message to not burn a DVD+DL above 2,4 has to do with the reliability (or accurateness) of the data, don't forget it is a Dual Layer disc that this rule applies to because of the laserbreak in the middle. to burn above 2,4 has its fair share of risks and it should be written on the package:
[Burn speed recommended = 2,4 above own responsibility]

Lol, is he really preaching about 2.4x being the only speed? LOL I have seen tons of articles recommending 4x with verbs, and memorex, the only ones i can think of that require you to not burn above 2.4x is those cheap ass ridata ones ....and honestly you shouldn't be using those :P

Ive never used a connectivity kit, always powered with my xbox. My mates been doing it for 4 years without a ban. No-one knows how M$ bans so its all just speculation. Just because you read it on the internet, doent make it true Link

since we are talkin' about DVD Dual Layer disc and the recommended speed at burning, it is a vitality to not burn too fast and believe me I had my fair share of coasters of non-Verbatims ..

lol is anyone else like me, and have like 5 or 6 different boxes in their house, and it seems like in every box there is a spindle of 100 dvd or cd's that are half labelled, half not. I should really get around to seeing which ones are worth keeping.
On another good note, a guy at work gave me a free 360, haha. It was rrod'ing him, and he did a bad attempt at the x-clamp. He reused the clamp (which was barely on, I took a look at it and one leg just popped off), and the thermal paste was like a cheap heatsink paste, really thin and gooey, and it was pretty well caked on. So tonight I am going to try and fix her up a little and see if I can get it going. A good unit to fart around on without having to screw up my own box.

hey guys,so I have got everything downloaded, I installed the portio32 driver, but am having trouble with jungleflasher. I am running windows 7 ultimate by the way.. anyways, when I go into the program, I can only detect my regular IDE cd drive, and cannot select the drive or find a port.. I dont know what to do. I hgave the xbox powered, and the sata cable connected to the pc. Also, its not closing or running properly or something, and makes my explorer stop running, aslo cannot close from task manager, I dont know if there is known issues with 7 or what... can someone help?

Okay, so I figured out how to get my ports visible, but there was still no drive detected. SO I reboot JF, and now I get errors occured with portio32, so I go to device manager and I get an error says its not running correctly or something like that. So I wanted to removed the software, and reinstall it to see if it made any difference, and now no matter what I do, rebooting, unraring the original folder, etc, when I go to install portio32, it just says there was an error and that the system cannot find file specified, and doesnt install it. I don't know where to go from here... if I can et this working, I think I will be good to go.

So, I ran system restore, and got everything working again, but still cannot detect my drive:
