I normally only back up the movie, the kids don't want to see all the other stuff "just get to the movie Dad" but I want to back up some of my discs now and I am a little confuseld by the % while using shrink to back up the entire disc, is a higher number better or is a lower number better? It's probably simple but I can't seem to wrap my little brain around it.

Hi michigan, You want that % number as high as possible.
Example:: You start Shrink, it analyzes and shows you a compression ratio of 65%. You go into re-author and start to remove items like trailers that number will go up to say 75%. The higher the % the better the final quality of your burn will be.

That website is run by a fellow aD-er ... Oriphus (Chris) and you're right michigan it is is a helpful guide section ;-)
I'll leave you in the capable hands of smeone else to answer on what they believe to be a good compression ratio , as I use DVD2One myself.
(I'll not go into why I prefer DVD2One instead of DVD Shrink cos I've explained a miliion & one times - lol)

Fair enough, I'll check some older posts for your thoughts on shrink and DVD2One. I'm always open to change
It's good that there are other sites available with more info by "our own people"

Hi michigan,
I like to keep the number above 75%, and I'll do a deep analysis on anything at 80% or lower.
I usually don't have a problem keeping the number up there because I generally just record the main title only.
Here's something interesting to look at:

It shows me that none of the programs are really any better or worse than the other they alll have their strong and weak points. 75% huh, that is up there. Alot of the movies I do are movie only and are not compressed at all. I was thinking of doing some of my backups as a full disc but it seems that its not really worth the quality drop to add in the extras so I guess I'll just stick with the movie only backup.

I like movies as much as the next guy, but after I watch Aliens for the sixteenth time, I really don't want to see the trailer for Sleepless in Seattle or some other movie that I already have. I'd rather look at Ripley without the monoblocks. I just don't care about the rest.
Those DL burners and media should be out in a couple of months so if anyone has an issue with compression that should solve it nicely. Unless of course you want to put four or five movies on a disc. ;D

I agree with you all but some of the extras are really cool ie. xmen 1.5. I guess I'll just stick with movie only and maybee leave in some of the stuff but take out the extra languges and stuff that should keep the compresion pretty low
