I have always used my kreon drive for backups. I was recently banned so I'm assuming it was mw2 that did it. So if I get a new box and want to rip games with my old benq drive, do I just take out the benq drive and hook it up to my computer like a normal drive. What exactly is this 0800? Will schtrom recognize the benq when it's hooked up? (sorry if these are stupid questions)

It does not have to be Samsung. Just any 360 drive that you put 0800 firmware on it. That's what you want.

When you flash your 360 drive with 0800, Windows will then detect it from then on. Just connect it via sata and power it. When turned on, Windows will detect the drive. From there, just use XBC to rip and you'll be set.

@mitch04

the log you posted is of xbc, not abgx. Second of all, did you not just read this whole thread? Stop using Kreon to rip games. Use 0800, or you are just setting yourself up in the future.

First off, thanks guessswho for the heads-up.

Of course, after seeing this thread yesterday I decided to put your findings to the test ... and you were 100% correct.

I ripped a Borderlands retail disc with both a Lite-On 0800 drive (#1) and a SH-D162C Kreon drive (#2) using XBC 2.9

As you can see in the image below, not only did the 0800 drive pick up more angles BUT it detected the different SS version based on these angles.

I'm not completely sold on this being the only reason behind the mass banning BUT it could be a big contributor. Hopefully, others will pay attention and this thread will remain active and not buried under less relevant topics.

Thank you very much for this visual evidence. This is a big deal, IMO. MS has been known to ban for bad angles in the past. It makes perfect sense that they would do it again.

@ the other people in the thread talking about ripping with Kreons: The entire point of this thread is that Kreon ripping should not be happening unless you've got a'hankerin' for a banning.

0800 firmware gives the same abilities as Kreon, but with better results.

I think this information should be stickied, or added to the ultimate.

People need to know that this is important. Kreon is nott he way to rip anymore, and it simply won't be unless there is an update to the kreon firmware.

In addition to the 0800 given more angles than the Kreon, if you inspect the results posted by ebxtreme closely, you can notice that the Kreon even gives different responses to the same angles in some instances. For instance, compare the data given from each drive at CT 24.

The deviation data given in CT 24 is definitely different and should be enough for any Kreon user to quickly reconsider their method of ripping.

I have been a die-hard Kreon user since I first started ripping my own backups (from originals only) since 2007. However, this was enough proof for me to flash my spare Lite-On with 0800 and make it my new & only ripping drive.

I have never played a downloaded (torrent) backup on any of my consoles since day one and yet MS banned two of mine last week. This should be proof that aside from the possibility of detectable ixtreme firmware, alot of verification info on ABGX could have been made by kreon firmware as well.

With this being said, correctly ripped angles could very well be the difference of staying safe or being banned if and when undetectable firmware is released.

Yeah, I am seriously considering that this was the main mechanism by which MS banned so many people. Sooo many rips come from Kreon drives. Everybody has played at least one, and that's all it would take, potentially.

I don't believe the angles would be the only thing that caused the ban.

However, it is there for MS to use when they choose to implement it.

Who writes the firmware for the kreon? I have one and only use it when I cannot find the game on the web LOL

kreon writes the Kreon firmware.

I don't know if the kreon drives can support ssv2 though. SO you'll have to use 0800 for it.

Kreon drives on ssv1 games are fine. HOWEVER, there is no flag that you're getting ssv1 from a game that actually has ssv2. It only shows as you ripping ssv1 (and you would never know if ssv2 is actually on it).

So only use 0800

Back again to satisfy my curiosity and educate those interested.

I ran a rip comparison with the one and only, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

As you can clearly see, many extra angles and completely different deviation values.

**So, when normally using the "Install to Hard Drive" feature (which would read the info from a retail disc as a 0800 drive does) ... all of the bad kreon info is transferred (as it was ripped) to the 360's HDD. The Live service may not have access to game discs when offline BUT access to info on your hard drive is available once you sign on. Another nugget to ponder.

Thanks for this post, now I can make use of one of my spare BenQs to do my ripping. For those using 0800, how are you guys powering the drive? Do you guys use it with the console mobo everytime you need to rip a game? Connectivity Kit? Or is there a dedicated adapter that taps into your PC's power supply. I'm just looking for a fast/easy way of getting to the drive without having to break out a console to go along with it or opening up the PC when I need to make backups. =)

If you are mechanically inclined you could create your own power adapter for the 360. Get an extra 360 power cable (cheap on ebay) and a spare male molex connector and just cut the wires and join them together where it is needed. Now you have your own power source for your 360 DVD drive.

Can you link me to a case of this happening? I have yet to personally see a person who played literally zero discs get the banhammer for simply having a modified firmware on a brand-new console.

I found one of my old xboxs that got the rings of death and tore it open. It is a toshiba samsung model TS-H943

Would this be an ideal drive for ripping games?
The only thing is my original firmware is on a 3.5 floppy that I have no idea how I'm going to get off of it (lol)

Yep, that drive will work nicely. You don't even need a legit drive key to rip games, so don't worry about that unless you want to some day attempt to bring that Xbox back from the dead.
