first off, i'm not a modder so everything is all very confusing for me right now which is why i am here to clear things up. so you'll have to bear with my n00bness

so i took off the faceplate some time ago to see what drive i have, and the yellow wire means i have a Lite-On (or so i read somewhere). i also know i have a Jasper (power ratings and all that). i updated my dashboard to the newest one (2.0.8955.0) with a pen drive, though i'm not sure what firmware version i have (the MFD date on my 360 is 2009-05-06 and the last working game i played was Arkham Asylum).
anyway, so i got a WORKING activate.iso disc (the SAME one my cousin is using to play wave 4 games now - i dunno what manufacturer drive he has but he bought his console the same day as me, from the same store) but when i put it in my xbox, i got the white screen and the "...put it in an xbox 360 console" message - which means it's burned properly, right? i mean he's playing wave 4 games using the same disc. except when i put in a backup wave 4 game (again, the same copy he's using) in my xbox, it STILL gives the "play DVD" message. i'm not a modder and i don't understand what's going on. i'm pretty sure i did everything right. it's working on my cousin's console, why not mine? is it because i have a Lite-On drive? I'm hearing that gives issues, though i don't know for sure...
i also wanted to ask - is there any permanent fix or do i have to keep using this acivate disc method till my 360 dies? how or why is it that legit copies don't need all this?

Activate.iso only works with iXtreme 1.6 and 1.61. There's no version of 1.61 for Lite-On drives at the moment, which means it will only work with 1.6. If your drive is flashed with an earlier firmware than that, that's why it's not working - you would still see the "to play this game...." message, but it wouldn't disable the stealth checks in the firmware to enable you to boot the wave 4 game, cos that's a feature of iXtreme 1.6 and above.

so how do i update the firmware? how do i verify what firmware i have in the first place? what are the ramifications of updating? will it play my older games? mess with my profile or HDD? will i be able to play the legit copies? and how come the legit copies don't have this problem? how are the unmodded 360's updated to accept wave 4 games?

If you read the ultimate sticky at the top of the forum you'll see the methods for updating firmware. If you didn't flash the console yourself, ask the person that did which firmware he used.

Updating firmware will have no effect on playing older games. iXtreme 1.6 will allow you to play any wave 1-3 backups without using the activate.iso disc and waves 4 and above with the activate.iso disc.

The firmware knows the difference between a copy and a legit game, so legit games will always boot directly. The reason that firmware has to be updated in some cases, is because it has strict compliance with certain waves in order to prevent the user from booting bad rips, but this also has the side effect of forcing you to update your firmware when new waves appear (or using the activate.iso disc as a workaround). Legit games are never affected by this, so no updates are required to play them.

okay, so i looked around a bit - here and else where. flashing the drive seems to be a fairly complicated process so i don't want to do it myself with my limited knowledge. however i did gather that firware 1.51 doesn't require the activate disc for Hitachi drives ONLY. does that mean you would need 1.6 or higher to play post April 09 games on other drives? cos if 1.5 or 1.51 on lite-on doesn't play wave 3, then i shouldn't have been able to play ODST, Arkham Asylum or NFS Shift. that means i have 1.6 which means the activate disc should work. or i am even more confused than i was before.

That's a false assumption. iXtreme 1.51 for Lite-On drives can boot wave 3 backups directly, so my guess is that's the firmware you have installed on your drive.

i really hate to be such a pest, but if i'm getting this right - then 1.51 for all drives (not only hitachi) was a quick fix that disbled the security check so that wave 3 games could be loaded directly. wave 6 came soon after to accept wave 3 but with checks again, which is why you have to use the activate disc for wave 4.
so, if 1.51 on ANY drive accepts any format, and i have 1.51, shouldn't the wave 4 backups load without any trouble in the first place?

You're confusing the issue with false assumptions. Only 1.51 for Hitachi drives can boot wave 4 games. The security check was disabled in terms of checking the video partition, but the PFI capacity also changed and for some reason, only 1.51 for Hitachi drives could handle it.

So, we know you have a Lite-On drive with a firmware installed that can boot wave 1-3 and we know that the activate.iso disc you're trying to use works on other consoles, so the answer is - you have iXtreme 1.51 firmware installed on your drive, which does not support activate.iso.

Any thoughts;
Run iX 1,6 on a Lite-on driver (flashed it myself). No probs with 3:d wave, have lots of em.
- NEVER been online at all, for about a year now - not even tested the port for god sakes...
- I have now tested 2 burns of activate.iso - both show correct screen when played ("Play DVD" + info on putting the thing in a 360).
- tried 3 gemes now; Rock band lego, GTA E and COD MW2...

None of the titles play at all, they simply show "Play DVD", what ever kinda boot I do. I'm stunned. This is not ment to be possible...
I have never burned a coaster, always used Verbaitm and 2,4 speeds...

What can possibly be wrong? Last idea for me is to do a re-flash of 1.6 and secure no funny business occured during last flash... but it feels thin...

So, any similar happenings out there - or better yet; any ideas on what could make this possible?

Hey, im an experienced modder and ive seen this over and over. Your problem.... well almost 100 %.... is that your not burning the disk on a dual layer and/or on both layers. The drive needs the activate.iso or aka 0800.iso to be burnt on both layers for it to unlock the fw stealth checks properly. I have also come across lite-on drives that just wont accept the disk, either way, running 1.6.

HOPES THIS HELPS LET ME KNOW HOW IT TURNS OUT FOR YOU.<}:

Really?
Have not found any info or guides other than ones stating that activate.iso must be burned on L0 - one layer, but on a DL + disc...?

Further, you have actually seen LiteOns that dont play W4, no matter what youve done?
Even "old ones" like mine?

Worst case I must hold my horses til iX LT is out...

no, i read in several places you have to burn into the single layer, but on a DL-disc. i'm not a modder, so don't ask me why. you might be having the same problem i am, with your firmware. my activate disc is fine - works on other 360's (using my backups) and my laser is fine cos all my old games work. only possible problem? the firmware. i am yet to reflash it - i think i am gonna wait till liteon v1.61, or till mass effect 2...
finished mw2, and am working on GTA already! needless to say my cousin is tired of seeing me everyday...

Leftenant,
any clarification on the layer issue with *.iso activasion?
I was under the impression that if only the console showed the "put disk in a 360 console" info, the activation should be working.
If certain LiteOn drives wont boot 4W, it should be possible to narrow them down through a scope in serial nr or dates - no?
Could be very helpful for others trying to "fix" this issue...

Well RAAC, can only say I'm happy for you; at least you have the means to play the darn things... even if it's at your cousin!

Ok guys this is how its supposed to go down. I dont know where you read that it should be on one layer but in my experience thats a crock. It should never say "put this disk in a xbox 360 console" it should read only "play dvd" on the "my xbox" tab. You may have the autoplay feature enabled ...turn it off. Dont play the disk, just insert it untill the play dvd message comes up then eject it and insert the game, only once, because if you eject twice you will have to redo the procedure. *Not to say playing the disk would change the way the disk works but this is what i've personally have found to work as it is a little too early to be certain. Burn the disk at 2.4x with clone cd on a dual layer disk. If you look at the bottom of the disk you can see the area where the laser has burnt the disk and the ring thickness should not be any wider than the thickness of a yellow school pencil...if its bigger its only on one layer. Also fujifilm and verbatim dual layer disks with a maximum burn speed rating of 2.4x not 8x (find to have a lot of read problems with disks that are capable of 8x even if you burn them at 2.4x) burnt with pioneer 112d seems to work the best for me. But like i said before some lite-ons just wont work with it for some reason and as far as narrowing down those drives ...well like i said before still a little too early...hopefully they will have new fw to fix this issue so we dont have to find out which models work and which dont. My personal xbox has 1.6 lite-on and there hasnt been a game fail to play yet. Hope i can be of some help. Try this let me know how things handle out.

It should be on only the first layer of a dual layer disc,253 mb on the first side and you can burn at any speed the media allows for. You wrote a paragraph of crap like you know something.my activate iso, along with several friends have the put this in an xbox 360 screen come up then you eject and out in the other game. There is newb under your name for a reason.also if you read his first post you would see he said the activate iso he is using has worked for his friend......wow good post though

Funny you dont seem to read what i wrote. I said it may not matter if you play the disk or not its just what works best for me ive personally tested this on about 30 boxes since wave 4 started. What i wrote was a guideline to help with compatability issues. Im not saying it is impossible just better.

If your not part of the solution your part of the problem. I may be a newb in this forum but i assure you thats the only thing.

And by the way you could burn the disks as fast as you want but i assure you if people follow that rule of thumb you will cause more coasters than beers for people. I dont want to say how many boxes ive done cause im not here to toot my own horn but buddy your the newb and an ignorant one at that.

This information is incorrect.

You are to burn on a dual layer disc, but only on layer 0.

When it asks you to confirm that you are doing that, just hit yes. You only want on the first layer.

Look to whomever is having problems running wave 4 games on lite-on 1.6 either the activate.iso is on one layer or two just look at the disk like i said about the pencil thickness. If your having problems with the activate disk just try it i dare you. What would you have to loose ? 1 disk?

I should clear something up because i have no drive control with clone cd i only assume that it is being burnt on both layers because of the size of the burn. I had tried with alcohol 120 burning on a single layer and seeing the burn mark being nearly twice as big. and got the put this in an xbox 360 console everytime and never worked on any of the 360's. So used clone cd worked the first time and saw the size difference of the burn ring and assumed it was set to burn ono both layers as default. But simply if you follow what i wrote the first time with the "pencil" it will most like solve your problem as well. On 1.6 as well.
