With the programs to softmod the wii installed on the SD card, does the SD card have to stay in the Wii now? I am using a 2 gig card, and I see people posting that they dump games to the SD card. Am i missing something? If so, where?

Sorry, I shouldve been a bit more specific, but thanks for asking such a simple question because i couldve missed that completely, yes i do have wifi i updated to 4.2 with it, and I also didnt mention that i do get the 222 to connect and download correctly, but when i try to get 223 it gives me a long error that goes as follows (as much as i can type as i see sorry if i miss a bit) error -116

Well, after you asked i decided to do a wii connection test and it was successful, but it asks me if i would like to perform a wii system update (i am already on 4.2u and was given no errors during the update) should i go ahead and update and try again?

*edit: so I decided to reupdate the wii and start over, I started from scratch re downloaded the files and followed the guide from the start. I must be missing something here.

Awesome guide larry. Thanks a lot.
Had one quick question. You don't have to answer it if you don't want because I doubt it's important. Just curious.
I've softmodded my Wii before but have never had a folder called "private" on my SD card. I read the guide over and it doesn't seem like the folder is used. What is the purpose of having this folder?

just registered so i could say thanks.
1st, I've never modded a Wii before using this guide, but have now modded 2 this week. This guide makes it SOOO easy if you follow directions & have a little commonsense when it come's to tech stuff.
Larry you have some patients man, but you are a hell of a guy for helping everyone like you do. Thank you!!

awesome guide many thanks on all the hard work you have put into it nd answering questions. quick question on the dop-iso mod part to up date the list with the iso's im supposed to use iso 249 to install all the other iso's ?

Also just signed up to say thank you for the great work u have done.
at first it wouldnt work, as i was trying another guide and it stopped about 85% in and wouldnt go any further,so i got this one and tried to finish it and wouldn't work. So i started this guide from the start and it worked first go(i think it has anyway) as i have no backups to try. i do have the homebrew channel and the backup loader ch, and everything came up good and a ok during instalation so im assuming its all good. i have 4.2e software.
just a few questions.
where do i get homebrew games from?
will this mod allow dvd video playback?
Can i have wiiconnect24 turned on?
If i update via the message nintendo send out will i have to reinstall it all again?
i have not done the usb part yet, but when i do will i then be able to run backups from the HDD and be able to backup to the HDD or do i need further software?

Try doing the steps below...
Lets do the first part:
On your PC use NUS to download the below files (DO NOT CHECK THE PACK WAD BOX).
MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT CHECK THE PACK WAD BOX (We want the content not to be packed).
Go to Database>IOS>IOS37>v3612 then click on Start NUS Download.
Go to Database>IOS>IOS38>v3610 then click on Start NUS Download.
Go to Database>IOS>IOS60>v6174 then click on Start NUS Download.
You should now have 3 folders that NUS downloaded.
0000000100000025v3612
0000000100000026v3610
000000010000003Cv6174
Now for the second part:
Download this file HERE and extract it.
Look on your SD Card and see if you have a folder similar to 00000001 if you do delete it.
We are now going to move the content that are in the above folder's to the proper place so Hermes can find it (MAKE SURE YOU GET THE PROPER CONTENT IN THE PROPER DIRECTORY).
Go to the extracted NUS Hermes Folder and go to the directory of 00000001/00000025/v3612 and then copy the content that is in the 0000000100000025v3612 folder to this directory. So you will have 00000001/00000025/v3612/content in the directory.
Go to the extracted NUS Hermes Folder and go to the directory of 00000001/00000026/v3610 and then copy the content that is in the 0000000100000026v3610 folder to this directory. So you will have 00000001/00000026/v3610/content in the directory.
Go to the extracted NUS Hermes Folder and go to the directory of 00000001/0000003C/v6174 and then copy the content that is in the 000000010000003Cv6174 folder to this directory. So you will have 00000001/0000003C/v6174/content in the directory.
After you get this done drag the 00000001 folder (that is in the NUS Hermes Folder) to the root of your SD card.
Now follow the Hermes 222/223 section again.
Also make sure you have removed all Gamcube Controlers and Memery Cards.

If you have softmoded before more then likely you have had a private folder. Even the Twilight hack used a private folder.
In this case the private folder is used to boot the HBC/Bootmii installer (bannerbomb exploit).

Neo Gamma is working fine but I have a problem when the game is finsihed and I want to move back to the wii menu the systmen freeze and the video connection to the TV send no more signal? anything I did wrong??
the Homebrew does not show any more the different installation menu IO had in the begining before I softmod the console.
When trying with the Homebrew menu the BOOTMII the console DVD slot blinks and nothing happens?

Keep in mind some newer drives will not play backup disc. If this is the case then you will need to use a USB Loader to play your backup games.

Yes you can load backup games with a USB loader. As well you can rip DVD backups/retail disc to the USB Device. There is a linked guide provided for USB Loader installation in this guide.

As many have said, I registered just to thank you for this Guide. I was going to ChipMod, but my son found your Giude and it has made my Mod so much easier.
You have save me a load of $ and a butt load of headache. Is there anyway to thank you other than my words?
I will be keeping an eye on this thread, as others have ask question I had intended on asking. The only one I didn't see was: Can I add Channels in the Wii Main menu for my WBFS games I am currently adding through the USB Loader off my FAT32 HDD?

Hi Larry,
Your softmodding guide work for me till the very last point, its an excellent guide. I'd recommend everybody before using this guide "Please READ IT CAREFULLY", I took more time in reading and understanding then actually performing it.
I GREATLY APPRECIATE IT !!!!
My setup is like this
I bought my Wii in Nov 2009, menu Version 4.2U. Works perfectly fine!! I can even play same sport CD in usual way, as well as new Mario Brs rip and Monkey Banana rip using NeoGamma R7 v14
Just a small issue : I CANNOT PLAY MOVIE DVD, even after installing DVDX at the bootmii step.
DOES ANYBODY OF YOU KNOW IF THIS CAN BE DONE ???? I KNOW THAT IN THIS THREAD THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN ASKED, BUT HASN'T RECD ANY LEGITIMATE ANSWERS FOR IT

Ok. New Problem....
Followed the guide. No error messages. Everything installed correctly. Tried the first back up. Game ran fine. Second backup gave me #001 error message. Now with every backup, including the first one, Neogamma "times out".
Any suggestions???
I have a cheesy modchip...some FC chip, it can't update.
In searching, I came across some folks mentioning to remove the modchip if you plan on using the softmod and this should help with the #001 error message, but I don't know why Neogamma "Timed Out" on every disc.

How will we know it is safe?
I assume we are talking about future Wii firmware updates.

i had this same problem, as when i installed hombrew and bootmii i only had a 128mb sd card and couldnt do the nand backup. So i got a 1gig sd card and put that in and got the same thing as u. hombrew would loud then press home and goto bootmii and the control would lose connection and the screen would be black and the blue slot light would just blink.
So i thought maybe its cause the files are not on the new 1gb sd card. installed them on there and tried again with no luck same thing.
So i installed the original 128mb sd card and it worked i got into bootmii, so i then changed to the 1gb sd card and did the backup that way.
So are we to assume larry that bootmii on the newer systems that use bootmii as ios that u need the original sd card in to actually use bootmii?
And now that i have a backup on a different sd card will that matter in anyway?

I had firmware 3.xE and updated to 4.2E and followed the tut.
Everything works fine.

Hi Watersoup,
MPlayer does work fine, but don't waste your time to watch dvd movies on the Wii, cause the DVD-quality is not worth it and the navigate controls are not very user-friendly

I just purchased a wii, and unfortunately updated to 4.2 before digging in. Received the above error when trying this mod. Can anyone make recommendation for backup options? At this point, I believe I have none. I have homebrew installed but no bootmii or preloader. TIA

okay i havent come accross this error in neogamma before DVD READ ERROR 1101 i have done all your steps and all have completed successfully i also tryed softchip and get this msg loctl error (DI_ReadID) i have never played any burnt games the serial starts with LU40 its new right of the box two days ago. do either of the errors mean i have the new chip set? if anybody can give some help it would be awesome thanx for the quick answer on my last post i just wanted to double check
