Allright I'm copying "Master and Commander" to DVD+RW and I have Nero version 6.3 and I am using the newest version of DVD shrink to encode.

And when I got done and tried to play the disc it says, with a Twentieth Century Fox Logo in the background, "This disc has not been formatted to play in this region". Its obviously burned something because of the "Twentieth Century" logo.

What could I be doing wrong?

Tom

It would appear to me that your burner drive might not be set to the correct region setting - i.e. the same region as your player. Did you rip the movie to your hard-drive first with DVD Decrypter?

Files of the movie were stored on my C drive but I've already erased them. Before I erased them I tried buring the movie directly from the DVD files on the C drive to Nero and that didn't work either. I got the same message after that burn was done. But I don't know if you're understanding me. The message I'm getting is burned onto the disc. It gives me that message when I try to play the movie in my Sony DVD player and when I try to play it on my DVD drive on my computer. It has the Twentieth Century Production logo behind the message I guess maybe like its still encrypted. I have no idea.

I have DVD Decrypter, but I thought DVD Shrink was an all in one process where it decrypted and then went directly to Nero for burn. Basically I thought it did the same thing as DVD Decrypter.

Allright I thought something might be wrong. When I looked in the DVD Structure in DVD Shrink of 'Master and Commander' under 'Menus'-->'Title Menus' there is a Entry for the screen I was describing.

It is the Twentieth Century Fox logo with the message: "This Disc Is Not Formatted to Play In This Region". Its a standard message put on DVD's to tell people who are trying to play DVD's in I guess something like a CD changer or something.

So I went and tried to play the DVD in my player again and when that screen popped up I started playing with the remote buttions like hitting 'Menu' and 'Forward' and when I hit 'Top Menu' the movie started playing. This is O.K. on my DVD player but there is no button on my WinDVD on my PC to solve this problem. So.....

What the hell is going on? I think if I can delete those 'Title Menus' in DVD Shrink the movie will play smoothly.

How can I do this?

Hi tomgee, and Welcome to our Club,

Rip your DVD back to your HD then go to re-Author and tear out that file that bothers you :-0

If I were doing it, I'd use Nero's recode2 or TMPGEnc DVD Author -

Best of luck,

Pete

DVD Shrink is a versatile freeware tool for fitting a DVD-Video disc on a single DVD-R.

DVD Shrink is capable of both re-authoring and re-encoding the movie. It features an intuitive user interface which makes it easy to choose what to keep, and what to lose.

DVD Shrinks allow the user to select compression level for each video track separately to obtain the desired disc size (which is usually below 4.38GB). It has a built-in decrypter, so there is no need to rip the DVD files on HDD first. The software is capable of producing either an ISO image of the ripped DVD, or a VIDEO_TS folder for further processing, viewing or burning.
Quote:
DVD Decrypter is a highly versatile VOB-ripping utility. The software takes advantage of both the DeCSS Plus and VobDec algorithms for looking up and decrypting the CSS encryption. DVD Decrypter is also multi-angle aware, and capable of removing the Macrovision scrambling key, as well as the region code during the ripping process.
Two quite different programs tomgee.

DVD Decrypter rips your files or iso image to the hard drive. DVD Shrink can then take those files (or direct from a non-protected disk) and shrinks (encodes) it down to size to fit on a blank dvd disc.

I solved my own problem and I feel like a jackass. When the DVD Shrink asks for your R.C.E region I chose China for some odd reason. The next time I chose U.S.A and that "region" message did not show up in my DVD player. But....

now I'm having audio problems. I have audio during the menu and what not, but when the actual main movie starts I have none. I have both versions of the English audio checked when I am decompressing my options before I burn.

What could be a possible problem here? Or should I start a new thread?

Oh, and thanks for the welcome. I think this place is going to be a great source.

Allright I got the audio problem figured out sort of.

I tried burning one time with the AC3 5.1-ch English audio checked by itself. Result--no audio

Second time I burned I only checked DTS 5.1-ch English audio. Result-- no audio

Third time-- I check both and I have audio.

But still both checked takes up a bit of memory.

I didn't think that I had to check both.

Which one do I really need?

I can answer this one for you tomgee - all depends on your standalone player. DTS is only useful if your player has DTS sound. Mine does so I always choose this (because it beats the heck out of stereo on surround sound) and AC3 5.1 and AC3 2 that way it will be compatible with most players. If I desperately need to cut back on size I'll leave out the DTS - you will note it is much larger in size than the other channels.

However - if you use only DTS, and ever change players and the next one doesn't have it then you'll have no sound. I did this to Austin Powers in Goldmember - for some strange reason only kept DTS, loaned it to a friend for her sick kid to watch one day and there was a lovely picture but not a drop of sound. :(

Yep if you start up a movie and you either get no sound or the director's comments playing then press the Audio or Track button on your remote to change channels to the one you want.

Can I ask why you are specifically choosing a region code when encoding with DVD Shrink? There is a check box to tick to make the movie region free - that way you don't have to be concerned with regions at all.

Yea, I saw that option to check instead of a region code. I'll check it in the future.

Tom,

When backing up Master and Commander, I choose to backup the entire disc. I've played it back on a 65" TV and there was ZERO difference between the backup and the original. I wouldn't be too concerned about leaving all the sound the DVD came with, except the foreign languages of course.

There are two kinds of "Loss of picture quality". The first is what I call, almost theoretical. This is what you can see if you stop the film and study an individual frame and compare that to the original individual frame.

The second is watching a DVD and can start to see actual blurring or pixelations, etc. I notice the ladder when putting multiple (generally more than two) DVD?s on a single DVD.

I like to trim allot of my DVD?s simply because I want the main feature to start right away and I don?t want to wade through all the previews. The rest, I backup in their entirety. At no time did I see with the naked eye a noticeable loss of picture quality.

What am I getting at ? Don?t sweat the small stuff, it doesn?t make a dimes worth of difference. Those that say otherwise are generally speaking to hear themselves heard. I say to you, make a note of the DVD?s these self-proclaimed ?Experts? talk about and then you backup that same DVD (I?ve done this at least a dozen times) and you be the judge. There are just too many nobodies blowing smoke. You be the judge - don?t let others do it for you.

Burn Brother, you?re on your way,

Cheers,

Pete

When you click Backup, on the Target Device tab under Select target device: you should select your burner.

If next to Select target device: it says you need to install Nero and it is already installed, then you have a bigger problem.

In that case you should uninstall Nero and DVD Decrypter and then reinstall Nero and DVD Decrypter.
Reboot the computer after each step.

Hi xbadboy2,

Sounds like you might have missed a box or two -

Go to ?Edit?, ?Preferences,? ?File I/O? and ?tick? the box that says ?Enable burning with Nero?.

When you click ?Backup,? where it says ?Target? select your burner and you should be finer than Frog Hair, Slicker than a Southern Sloppy Sloth on a slippery stream slope -

Try that and get back to me -

Cheers,

Pete

PS You should be using DVD Shrink 3.1.7 of course

LoL I did miss the Backup where it says Target I did not put in my burner. I was doing it like I way using decrypter for the burn. I just wanted to see if it was better to use shrink/nero or shrink/decrypter. People that have both say they do a great job can you even tell or is Nero just a wast of room?

I don't think so -

I love Nero recode2 and for putting together different projects and Nero classic can't be beat (except by DVD2One, heh, heh).

To copy a backup on-the-fly, how could you do without Nero Express -?

Naauuugh, I defiantly want Nero taking up space on my PC.

Cheers,

Pete

Me Too!! Pete.

I use Nero for most of my burning desires. On The Fly Copying is terrific for both cd and dvd media. I've only just used Nero Recode to back-up a dvd for the first time - although lengthy (I selected the double pass option) the quality of the back-up is excellent. I've used Nero Vision Express on many occasions to construct movies - both from video camera files and files from disc - it works well although I no-longer use the menu function as it isn't always combatible with some of the older standalone players.

Mmmmmmm now what else? Oh yeah Disc Info is invaluable. I can rip my cds to my HD in mp3 format in super quick time, and with the quality I want. Having access to the online database is a great saver too when you want to print out playlists to go with your music disc. I find Nero has the easiest interface for me when I want to back-up data files.

I find the SmartStart interface easy to use - I always have it set on advanced. There are many other things that Nero Ultra can do - for example last month my 12yr old did an assignment on Discoverers of Australia as a PowerPoint presentation. We chose some suitable "sailing music" (Rod Stewart, I Am Sailing & a sailor's jig) but of course the music wasn't quite the right length so I edited it with the Wave editor and even took out the words "I am The Captain" from a Kasey Chambers song to make a perfectly timed and suited soundtrack.

So No Nero is definitely not just a waste of space. This is one piece of software that I have always got value for money for and accordingly I always keep it updated to the lastest version.

Grogey, I don't know if you created slides for the PowerPoint presentation or not, but if you did, you could take those slides and music and create a slideshow movie in NeroVision Express. You can add all of the slides, then add the music, then check a box in More, that adjust the time and transition of the slides to fit the music perfectly, without removing any of the music.

I don't know if that would fit the needs, but it is an option.

the guides for Nero are very detailed, (I printed them and there were about 750 to 800 pages) they are on the web site for download or if you already have the Nero disc they are on there. If you installed it on your system they should have installed as well

Jeff,

You ask too much - There are about 15 guides for Nero. Go to their site, decide what you want to do and download the guide for that -

Pete

PS Next time at least look once before you ask -
