I have a problem .......... after the movie burns to my hard drive it ask for me to then put in blank dvd-r...ok after I do it can not find the disk and then I goto cancel and it goes back to shrink and it ask for the original dvd .......... ok I then put it back in and it gives me an error of i/o problems..... is it because I just have a burner and not a dvd-rom??? I have shrink 3.1 and I also hve nero 6.3. any suggestions...... thanks for all of your help....

No there should be no problem with you not having a dvd rom i have backed up many movies and i also just use my burner to read the dvds too.
Check the settings in DVD Shrink to make sure that you burner is set to the main drive for writing.

a couple of ?'s why doesn't my shrink go straight to Nero to burn? and I just got another error on shrink... do I just need to remove shrink and put it back....... and does it matter what program I run ( like win 98se or which do I need to run)??? thanks again

What operating system you running? And in shrink, click edit --> preferences --> File I/O tab make sure box is check to enable burning with Nero.

After you shrink, it is stored on your harddrive. If you hit cancel when it asks for a blank dvd, you can just open Nero later and burn the files off your harddrive.

I'm running 98 se..... but i just tried to run a backup on a dvd and it just gave me a error at 100% as (vts_04_01..... ) acess denied!!!! I've just can't get to the burn part and I guess I'm just real dumb at this ...... I'm real new at this too.... Thanks,

It's not you, it's your computer running 98se. Windows 98SE uses fat32. fat32 is limited to files under 4GB. Your files that you will be burning are over 4GB. Here read this thread. There are mentions how to switch from fat32 to ntfs.

my system is ( dell optiplex gx150----- 1133 mhz ---bus 133 mhz----- memory 510 mb ----- and hd 40g ) I know this is enough to do this correct?

Sorry, let me correct myself. It's not your computer. But normally windows 98se is formatted using the fat32 system. fat32 is limited to files under 4GB. You need to switch your file system (ie.fat32) to the ntfs file system. Read this thread, Scuba Pete mentions how to switch from fat32 to ntfs, without losing any of your data.

the files are not over 4gig. He is using dvd shrink, which creates a bunch of files. If you haven't tried switching to NTFS, don't. You can do anything you want with fat32. Just insert a blank dvd when dvd shrink asks, and let it burn.

Hi n2bowling, Welcome to our Newbie Club -
My guess is that you?re not using a proper media for the job - a little research on your part would have turned up the following information about media - Memorex is a good example as media goes, figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record.
1. * Cheap media freezes, skips, stutters, pixelats, partially jams, may be rejected and lest we forget, our old standby, giving you the old just refuses to be recognized routine :-(
Besides "Freezing", "skips" and pixelations, many times you?ll get a ?Cyclic Redundancy error? or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won?t accept your ?cheap? media :-(
Another problem which ?pop?s up? is a ?*Power Calibration Error?. This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, Yep, you guessed it, inexpensive media.
*A ?Power Calibration Error? can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn?t usually the case. Trying to shut down your software and ejecting your DVD then restarting your program and re-inserting the same media recently cleaned has been known to help.
Inexpensive media or even average media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way !
2. A good grade media is needed for DVD reproduction !
?Branded? Ritek G04's or Branded Verbatim are what we?re looking for OR any media boasting ?Advanced AZO Metal Dye?, this indicates a superior dye application, while they are sometimes a bit ?pricey? they are acceptable.
Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 down below a dollar a disc -
Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap or even average discs and good copies from 3 Branded Verbatim discs or 3 ?Branded? Ritek G04 discs - which ones then will you say are too expensive ? The 3 ?Cheapo?s with no movie backup OR , the 3 recommended discs with a perfect backup on each disc ?
Bear in mind, Memorex, Fuji, Sony, TDK, Orange Pack and others are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets, Data and your text backups and archives, they just don?t work well for DVD backups. Even DataSafe G04?s made by Ritek have been reported as inferior quality and are evoking that ?Oh no, I shouldn?t have gotten those.?.
Remember, for DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media or even average media is a gamble, some people win, the majority of people lose, varying amounts but, they still lose :-(
Let's try the right media for the job - just buy a 5 pack of what we recommend that will settle it once and for all - Don?t cheat though, buy the EXACT media we recommended -
Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty, it surely cannot hurt.

Check them all with this guide -
HINT:
I create a folder on my Desktop named " All DVD Work" and before ripping my DVD?s I create another sub-folder with the name of the movie I'm backing up. (i.e. ?All DVD Work\Pirates of the Caribbean.?)
Let?s go over our settings for DVD Shrink.
When we open DVD Shrink, go to ?Edit,? check to make sure that ?Full disc Backup? is checked. Next, go to ?Preferences,? where is says ?DVD Target size? I select ?Custom? and in the size box I put 4300MB. That allows you a bit of wiggle room on your disc so that you?re not writing to the very edge of your disc. NOTE: A 4.7GB disc only holds 4.36GB of data. I like a tiny bit of room when I burn hence, the 4300MB instead of 4360MB. Make sure the ?User preferences? boxes are all ?ticked?. Under the ?Preview tab? be sure the ?Enable video and audio preview? is ?ticked?. Under the ?Output Files tab? ?tick? the top 4 boxes. The ?Stream Selections? should be fine. Under the ?File I/O tab,? - ?tick? ?Enabled overlapped I/O? and ?Check RPC drive region code?. Under ?Burn settings,? ?tick? ?Enable burning with Nero.? NOTE: When you wish to have Nero do it?s ?Automatic burning thingie? make sure this box is ?ticked.? DVD Shrink can also burn an ISO image with DVD Decrypter, when you wish to use DVD Decrypter as your burning engine, make sure this box is ?un-ticked.? When you are finished, click ?OK.?
Alrighty then, are you ready ? Good ! Let?s do us an entire disc backup - -
Please do your homework and find the correct media for this project, discs are important.
Place your original in your DVD ROM drive (if you have 2 drives) and put your blank in your burner?s drive tray. If you only have the one drive - put your original there and continue on - when your blank is needed, that is the time to swap discs. Click ?Open Disc? - find your drive and click ?OK,? - DVD Shrink is now ripping your DVD - Cool Huh ? If you want an entire disc, which we do today, everything is completely ?Automatic? - (Just to make sure, check the top of the window, ?Full Disc? should already be depressed - Now don?t get upset, it likes being depressed, I just don?t want you being depressed - ) - (lol) OK, then, moving on - -
When you click "Backup" in DVD Shrink, a box will come up saying ?Backup DVD.? Under the ?Target Device? tab where it says ?Select target device? choose your burner?s drive. Where it says? Target Folder:? click "Browse" and trace your path back to "All DVD Work\ Pirates of the Caribbean ". Under the ?DVD Region? tab, make sure ?Region Free? is ?ticked?. Under ?Backup options?, ?tick? ?Perform Deep analysis? (it takes longer but with your longer pictures, it makes the picture quality Ooohh so much better :-) - while we?re here let?s also ?tick? the ?Run backup in low priority mode? box too. Now click ?OK? - Guess what, we?re done and done !!
Last step: ?STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER !?
Clear the room then, clear your throat and yell, ?Burn Baby BURN ! ?
Do not fold, spindle, mutilate, molest nor fondle the keyboard. GO AWAY !
Ms. Computer will let you know when she is finished, everything is good, don?t mess with it now !
Now when DVD Shrink is finished, it will give you a VIDEO_TS folder in your ?All DVD Work\ Pirates of the Caribbean? folder. Now, if you need to burn a second DVD copy, days down the road, all you have to do is give that folder to Nero or any burning engine and nothing needs to be done, it can be burned directly to disk. At one point in time I had 23 movies sitting there, just waiting for my shipment of blank DVD media to arrive.
And Lastly,
Converting your PC?s file system from FAT32 to a better filing system like NTFS would be an asset - Try using something like Partition Magic 8.0 to do the job or ?Google? for FAT32 to NTFS -
