Wow, you guys are the best, have to change my handle from sheethead to bloatedhead with all the info you've now given me.

brobear
Damn that's almost like a documentary you've written there, for sure I need to print and follow your directions. I did know about the packet writing conflict with DirectCD and INCD.
I sincerely appreciate all your time and effort.

bigorange,
I will also print the simple instructions you gave and give that a try. A very good suggestion you made, I'm going to practice with a R\W so the only thing I lose is time.

Since I've written my last post I have downloaded AnyDVD and CloneDVD, I've got em all now.

AnyDVD is sweet, runs in the background as you said, you can even hide the icon in the toolbar.
For your information, it does use about 4MB memory when running (check task manager), it's not that much, however, the more crap you have running things tend to slow down. I try to keep nothing unnecessary running on startup, almost all programs want to run on startup, total waste of resources. Just put a shortcut on your desktop or Start/Programs folder and click on it and it will run, do this right before you want to burn , after burn just exit and resources are free.

I started AnyDVD and burned a keeper with Clone CD with only the movie and menu with scene selection.
It's pretty easy to use but far too slow for my taste.
The Lite-On burner I have can burn 4x media at 8x and it still took over an hour to burn the 100 minute Scissorhands movie.
My next experiment will be with running ANYDVD and using Nero again, with all the information you and brobear have provided I think even an idiot can do it.
My wife also calls me that on occasion, and rightfully so. I tell her I must be one to have married you.
Just kidding, I love her dearly and she?s still my bride after 31 years.

I can?t thank you guys enough for holding me by the hand and walking me through this, you gave me all the tools, now I just have to practice and apply them. I?ll find what works best and stick with it and become more proficient.

cazanova,
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/86734 goes to the article I wrote on DAEMON
Below is the URL for the DAEMON site.
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/download.php
If you can't find a manual there, go to http://www.doom9.org . Doom9 is a good site to check out anyway. They have in depth manuals for most of the programs they talk about here on AfterDawn.

bigorange
Sometimes the fun is in the difference. No doubt the software you refer to is excellent. I've used them. As you know, people just have a tendency to develop favorites for no real reason. Most of the programs and the ones you mentioned are excellent. As I said, after a while, when a person can make an informed decision, it is a matter of personal preference in most cases. The only difference is when you have an editing program that will do a particular job the other programs can't.

Time for a swig of 'Old Barton'.

For Nero to handle the video files properly with only AnyDVD, you would have to purchase the DVDvideo plugin. They don't let that one out of the house before you pay. The plugin can be purchased and downloaded from the Nero site.

unless you are dealing with files below 4.7 GB, you will have to use more than just AnyDVD and Nero if your movie is over the size of the target disc at all.
Here's how the recipe works:
rip - edit - burn (in the simplest terms)
AnyDVD only lifts the encryption, you still have to extract the file and transfer to Nero to burn. That file extraction requires another program, unless you load directly to Nero (an editing program). That editor will have to be capable of compression if what you want to record is larger than the disc you want to record to. DVD Shrink is a good editing program that uses Nero as the default burner and Nero can run at 8x. You hit [backup] in Shrink and Nero will burn the file automatically. You can use Nero by itself (with the plugin)with the AnyDVD, but the file you are going to write can not be any larger than the disc you are going to record to or you will have to put the material on more than one disk. I've never used Nero to 'split'.

AnyDVD + DVD Shrink + Nero would work out well.
rip - edit- burn

By the way DVD Shrink is free and you can get an in depth guide at doom9. all the URLs are above.

Sorry brobear, not true. I got the plug-in for free with an update and you CAN go directly into Nero recode2 without doing anything else. It will extract your dvd compliant files. There are plug-ins nero sells but you won't need them for this. Be sure and download your power pack 1&2 and while you're there get all your updates for nero 6, you can find it on the nero homepage, this will give you everything you need. Powerpack 3 is incd(you don't need) and 4 is nero showtime (I like it, up to you). None of this will cost a dime. Promise. IT will shrink and compress, do anything shrink does easier and better (for me anyway, sometimes I get audio snags with shrink) and yes- Jack Daniels is talking for me now. I used to be a BIG Shrink fan until scuba pete turned me on to recode2. I had heard not-so-great things about it and didn't use it. Now I am a convert. I think brobear (who knows his sheeaat)is talking about nerovision express and burning rom. And for that , what he says is true, but not recode. I've put 8-9 GB's on one disc with recode2. Whew! with that good nite to all, I think I'll go watch a back-up made just the way I stated. Afterthought- rip(anydvd),edit,burn(recode2)

Hey bigorange,
Would have replied and informed all, but the holidays and celebrating slows me down.

The 'Skinny'
Yes Irene, pigs do fly. Recode 2 does an excellent job of recording the movies. And, as you said, all you have to do is run AnyDVD and Nero Recode2 to do the job. (no guides for X Copy though) Excellent results. Now for the down side...

The Down Side
Nero comes in a demoversion, free trial, then you have to purchase a license when the trial period expires (unless your buddy shares his and the rules say no sharing). Unless you have the new demo or a full retail version, you have to obtain two (2) licensed plugins. Even after licensing, my trialware version would not operate recode without the retail plugins. So free boils down to what version you have or how long the demo lasts.

I had to go back to Nero for the DVD Video plugin and the Multichanell plugin. The video plugin is for handling the video files and multichanell is for handling the newer Dolby audio.

Not For Free
As I said, with the trialware version, you have to purchase the video and audio plugins. The only way this is free is when one has the license for the expensive, full retail version. I personally found this out. I had to go back and get the plugins myself.

Once again, Nero does an excellent job of burning and the quality is superior. If you get off the greenbacks. The burn is fast, but the prep time is a little slow. The burn was 15 minutes of the total 1 hr and 22 minutes for 'The Return of the King'. This was done on a high capacity system, so limited computer capacity (CPU - RAM - Hard Drive) was not an issue.

Recode2 is so good in fact that I use it for backing up my more valuable (large)movies. I don't use it when I am in a hurry or when the files are within the 70% - 100% compression range. As I've said before, different tools for different jobs. Its a matter of preference.

To date, I have had no audio snags or any other problems with DVD Shrink. So, it stays in the software library with the other good programs.

To conclude:
I like Nero recode2 (only the demo is free and then you pay), and I like DVD Shrink. I also like DVD X Copy, which this thread was originally about.

Good to hear from ya. I had a little Jack binge myself, felt bad this morning, so a little hair of the dog and oops..... I just wrote to you in another thread at 4:00am and wham-got this one. coincidence, I think not! On the Nero, I never used the trial version, just upped and paid the 59.00 and haven't had to purchase anything else. Got all the plug-ins I needed, and the power-pack downloads and the rest of the updates and wha-laa everything works. I really like the cover design program too(can't tell the difference with covers from cdcovers.cc). any way, good to hear from ya, where's your bear?

One thing I forgot to mention is the amount of system resources required to run Recode2. You can check out the specs at Nero.com/us/nero6-ultraedition.php" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.Nero.com/us/nero6-ultraedition.php . This is not a program for low capacity PCs. If people will read the instructions, they will know why those little PCs are dropping dead all over the place (in like 'Nero made my PC crash')

Glad to be of assistance rono. When its not suffering from interference, Platinum can do a good job. Too many people have knocked it because it wouldn't work for them. And I have to say, working out the bugs isn't for everybody. Sometimes its just a lot easier to go to another program that doesn't have to be worked out. I fixed it because I hated to waste the bucks I paid for the program and I like a good challenge.

brobear,
Thanks to your extensive efforts, I now am able to use Xcopy Platinum with Movie and Chapter only.

I've also tried bigorange?s method using AnyDVD and Nero Recode2 but ran into a snag. Perhaps bigorange can offer a suggestion of where the problem lies. I like this combination the best.

Following his instructions:
?1-insert movie 2-turn on recode2 2a-choose dvd to dvd 3-hit import dvd and wait for analysis (about 1 minute) 4 disable everything but main movie and menu 5-hit next 6-check burn at once and advanced analysis 7- hit burn 8- wait and play dvd with fully functional menu. Which sounds easiest? (This is with Anydvd running in the background) good luck with however you go- you certainly have enuff info....?

Simple enough until I get to # 6, the burn at once button is grayed out so I can?t select, the advanced analysys button is available and checked. Maybe something not right with recode2. I did an experiment and first ripped the full disc to, the hard drive (AnyDVD was not used) using Shrink, then opened recode to and selected movie and menu,
It now allowed the burn at once feature to be used.
Once started, it took 37 minutes for advanced analyzing, 39 minutes for encoding, and 15 minutes for the burn.
That?s in addition to the 33 minutes it took to rip with Shrink. Just seems like recode2 with the advanced analysis is doing the same thing Shrink just did.

The way I see it by using ANYDVD to remove the copy protection, Nero Recode should be either using wither the Analyzing or encoding stage to rip, not both, far too time consuming.

I really like the features and ease of use with Nero, I?m sure if I were just able to get the burn at once feature activated, things would go much faster.

BTW I have a 1.6 gig P4, 200 MB hard drive space, 1024 mb memory with XP Pro running.
I disable all startups that are not needed. I use updated & checked Spybot, Spyblaster, Adaware, Sygate Firewall, Nod32 AV, Xp is all updated. I built the computer myself so I?m quite familiar with it?s workings.
I highly doubt it?s any kind of incompatibility issue.

Don't want to swell a sore head, Note I didn't say sorehead. Glad you got me going with that anydvd. Definitely worth what I paid for it. That is a slick setup. I was surprised by the ease of anydvd and recode. They are a seamless set up and I'm still amazed by the results. Like you , I did 'The Return Of the King' and it finished in 1hr22min I checked the log. And that was with my poor old slow 4x burner.

That's high praise indeed brobear, coming from a tech-savvy guy like you. Thanx! Hey sheethead, sorry, forget my earlier post, i see where u did use anydvd. not sure why it didn't work, did you register it, load all updates, and install power packs 1 and 2? This ALL needs to be done for it to work properly. Like I said ,i did "Return....king" in 11/4 hours. long movie and w/most of special features.

bigorange,
I don't know if its the holiday cheer or what. I was using the DVD2One and wasn't paying attention. Made a great quality movie putting 2 discs together. Only problem was the second half was first. I hate knowing the end of a movie when I start watching the first part. Now I know its not automatic.

siber,
Oops, that's 200 gigs not megs.

rono4102,
No Roxio or any packet wrting software installed.

bigorange,
Running licensed Nero Ultra v6.3.1.10, no power packs or plugins required, they come with the program version. AnyDVD version is current at 6.3.2.4.

To check if plugin installed, I open Nero Vision Express, if I highlite Make DVD-DVD Video a box pops up and states DVD plugin detected and installed. So I suppose that's not the problem. Also the red fox head from ANYDVD is present in the task bar before I open Nero
If I could only get that damb burn at once not to be greyed out I'd really be happy.
I'll try playing with it some more but I've checked and double checked everything.

May just try uninstalling and re-installing both AnyDVD and Nero.

sheethead, trust me on this: click on the ?mark @ the bottom left corner, from the drop-down menu click on enter registration# and enter your nero purchase#. Recode, nerovisionexpress, and nero express must be registered individually. I would also go to the homepage and get any updates and load powerpacks 1and 2. I also had problems with nve2 and recode2 til I did this. You do not get the program's full function til you register. Of course u don't have to............PS-read the earlier threads

Hey sheethead
The bigorange knows his stuff on that. To check what programs you have serial numbers for, double click the Nero Startsmart Icon, when the console screen opens up you'll see Nero up in the left of the console screen. Move the cursor arrow over it and click. Opens up the screen with 2 tabs, programs and serial numbers. You can see what you have and what you need. If it doesn't work that way; download the new Nero program and it will.
