Group releases open-sourced PSGroove PS3 jailbreak

article published on 1 September, 2010

Last month PSJailbreak showed the world that the PS3's security model was open to be exploited, and Sony was quick to shut down the project. This week, PSGroove, the "open source PSJailbreak," has been released for the masses, giving owners a chance to jailbreak their PS3 for a lot cheaper than the $170 PSJailbreak. The code can be run on a hacked PSP, a TI-84 calculator, a $25 Teensy++ ... [ read the full article ]

This is everywhere now. Sony can't stop it any more than Microsoft can stop the firmware hacks on the 360. Reason? It's not for sale anymore.

You can't shut it down now without shutting down the entire Internet.

So how exactly will it run on a psp? This is exciting news to know Sony has been beaten for now.

Did a little research and the PSP hack isn't working yet. When it is that's when I'll give it a shot.

This is pretty cool no more updating for me lol. I have been waiting for the source to be released, with the power this thing has homebrew is like a must! I also want to see custom firmware like the psp had for so long. So hopefully as time goes by they can make something where it just installs on the ps3 so you won't need the dongle anymore. Just my thoughts for the future maybe they will be reality :D

'Can be run' is present tense indicating it can already be done. As far as I know reading the thread in the link, that is yet to be the case. Just a note for others glancing over at their TI-84 calcs.

Why? Sony goes after them, shuts them down, then 2 more versions by some one else comes out and the cycle continues. Think of it like the bittorent hydra. They shut down one tracker, another 2 pop up in its place.

get ready for sony's next load of forced ps3 patches that try to stop any attempts at running free homebrew software that distracts you from purchasing software that sony profits from.

get ready for the next load of bricked ps3's when sony release their rushed patch!

Okay now that is harsh, I fail to see how people sharing information should belong in jail; unless they are doing it to make profit. That in my mind is pirating, ripping off copyrighted material to earn $ off it. But if you doing it for yourself for your own use, I don't see how it causes any harm.

For those saying:

another site will open when one shuts down
True, I suppose if you want to look at it that way, but then it's a constant pain in the... In the end tho all of you are right, the more corporations fight piracy the more piracy fights back. And although it was once believed PS3 would be impenetrable, piracy only proved with a lot of patience, you can hack anything.

360's still sell for $300 and a PS3 isn't worth it how? Wow I never thought I'd say that..., I used to be against PS3 but for some reason I find it reasonable, despite having 2 of em die on me in the same month. Still those were older models,.. You know what forget I said anything.

This exploit has been out for a few days before Afterdawn posted it, I had the files for a while but couldn't do anything with them, as I still don't have the key. So far there haven't been any bricked PS3's to my knowledge, but I wouldn't say just yet it 100% safe. Still I don't think there is much chance of this one going wrong.

The drama is site updates, it's back up now.

You can't get mad because people want to mod their rightfully own and paid for system. Yes I know maybe the majority of them when to do this for piracy but there is still a few people who just want a good homebrew scene, like some custom firmware that will enable more video codecs like MKV or some emulators for older games. I think Sony really bought this on themselves when they removed the OtherOS although I know a lot of us didn't use it, really pissed of a lot of people and made the modding community work harder.

imagine if sony would have done that in the first place. we wouldnt be talking about how sony botched the ps3 we would be talking about how shitty that console was, what was it called again xbox360?

World where hardware manufacturers rule the world = Apple
They choose what you can and cannot do based on their corporate skewed ideas of need.

World where the USERS rule the world = PC
The USERS choose what they can and cannot due based on their need or desire. Innovation occurs to meet unfulfilled need and is done cheaply on already existing hardware.

You may see this as an attempt at using pirate software ... and it certainly is that. But it serves to keep the hardware manufacturers in check so they do not become all-powerful like Apple.
If we ever ultimately lose this fight then the future will look grim indeed.

If I buy a bed, I can make a custom headboard to put on it. Legally.
If I buy a car, I can put a custom engine in it. Legally.
If I buy a bicycle, I can put custom brakes on it. Legally.

If I buy a PS3, I can't do anything to it, because I don't really own it, Sony does, so if I mod it to suit my own needs, then I have done something illegal and get it bricked.

Why can't they just make it the way people want it? Sony would make so much money on new consoles, especially considering they seem to love the money part of customer dissatisfaction.

But you can't hack the computer module of a (newer) car legally.
