Group releases open-sourced PSGroove PS3 jailbreak

article published on 1 September, 2010

Last month PSJailbreak showed the world that the PS3's security model was open to be exploited, and Sony was quick to shut down the project. This week, PSGroove, the "open source PSJailbreak," has been released for the masses, giving owners a chance to jailbreak their PS3 for a lot cheaper than the $170 PSJailbreak. The code can be run on a hacked PSP, a TI-84 calculator, a $25 Teensy++ ... [ read the full article ]

Sure you can. You can buy performance chips to enhance your engines horsepower output. Automotive magazines and performance shops sell them and they are legal.

And to add to this you can use devices like a bluefin that simply manipulates the ecu to get what it wants about lying about sensor levels to reach the same end gole, with the added plus they can be simply unplugged.

However the serious boys still chip the ecu, although they are making it much much harder, my mate probably chipped one of the first new vw sirocco's in the uk. Hi Chipper had a real time trying to bypass the multistage rolling handshake and in the end the vw ecu team in germany were given direct remote access to the car and ecu over the internet for the afternoon until a way to pre-predict what the rolling handshake using a lookup table system (cheat sheet) as the response time was something crazy.

Anyway my point is, they (the corps) will always try to manipulate cheat and lie to do what ever they can to make more money at the expense of innovation, the customer or what ever may get in the way... probably why google has gone so far with "DONT BE EVIL", but any.

My point is the eco system that exists i believe has been as someone pointed out a good self corrective system, with one in balance correcting the other and vica versa.

The nature of the universe is one that where no matter how good things may go for a company, eventually something bad will happen that ends it time on top.

And also the candle that burns brightest burns the shortest, which can be probably illustrated by the iphone and the fact android units in Europe are now outselling the iphone. The users loved the device but eventually most got tired of apples games and have started to discovered all that glitters is not exclusively covered in apple badges.

On contrast Microsoft has gone on for ever at the same time they still charge a completely out of touch price for the os compared with today's hardware, that said they have always managed to perform some half arsed attempt at counter piracy prevention... and ive always belived this has always been a blind eyed system to ensure windows was used ever where, regardless of if they paid, as dominance ultimately means more sales. Now im not saying microsoft isnt evil for doing so, but their restraint at evil at time is what has made them the desktop pc's most used and popular os and i belive they realised this long ago.

Coming full circle, sony in the day of the psone and ps2 were no so evil, people chipped, boot disked and more so in the case of the first playstation sony came from nowhere to take on the likes of mario and sonic. With the end result being sega eventually folded in the hardware market after a long battle between mario and sonic was eventually put to bed with mario and sonic having a head on collision with the likes of ridge racer and wipeout as home games machine overtook the power of the original arcade systems. Sony only ever managed this due to piracy, its why they sold so many systems and i believe sony maybe forgot this, if it hadnt and had not made it so hard eventually jailbreak the ps3 they probably would have sold twice as many units. However remember the ps3 was a real step forward in the evolution of games systems as it was the first real time a games system could at the time boast a cpu with more grunt than the average users home computer, microsoft hit back with something that was in all honesty about the same as intel and amd had both had dual core's on the market for way longer. So to keep in the game sony sold the units at a loss, which in all honesty is probably the least evil thing they could have done apart from give them away free. But since then the hardware got a lot cheaper and sony ran with faith that hardware always got cheaper once production ramped. Sonys has probably made or has nearly made the initial loss back and the real profit can be made, hypothetically switch phase two....?

Ok now you have reached the market place, you have managed to do so in a way that's kept you in the game, got your units out there and your havnt gone broke doing it.

So taking from the existing model's windows/ps1/ps2 whats the real way to ensure that dominate... allow piracy!

Now im not saying they have done it intentionally but someone release the code to make this happen, either a careless dev, an upset sony employee or a hacker who struck gold. I know one thing for sure if i was Sony i wouldn't have played the game any other way then they have.

Allow piracy from day 1, microsoft goes ape, unit price would need to stay high to cover the cost of the hardware as little initial profit could be sought from the software and users would have been seriously put off with a system that cost so much more, less sales mean less money to re-invest in infrastructure and future development at keeping the cost of production down and everything either takes longer to happen or doesn't happen at all.

If microsofts system was twice the original price at the start, sony wouldnt have had to sell at a loss and could have made a better cut on the hardware and things may have gone down another road.

A two phase attack would ensure you entered the market as quickly as possible and kept up with the jones, then once it had become a sustainable and was paying and most importantly competing. A gear shift and the units unlocked for piracy and now you have a unit thats a hell of a lot cheaper to produce and makes a good cut but you can sell at a lower price and due to the fact people know they can copy games means it sells more units and will more quickly kill off the competition than if they had just left the locked down model in place.

Again im not saying this is the case, but if i was Sony im pretty sure its how i would have played the game.

Lets see what happens, im betting now its had its free advertising and moment in the spot light so everyone was aware that it could now be done they will kill of the aussie company and prevent anyone from selling the commercial version which is now completely pointless as its free. Haha just looked i dont appear to be able to find a supplier on the planet that claims to have any of the Teensy++ USB Development Board or AT90USBKEY, i just wonder how many of these electronics sellers can understand why they have received such massive orders for these yet. HaHa, some are even quoting stock as November, now that's a long time to wait.....

So lets just watch this space, i cough predict that sony will stop the aussie device selling and make another big public outcry about how its soooo unfair that everyone can now (in big capitals) "PIRATE" on their game system, just to make sure it gets more press time.

Then just watch the demand for new consoles go up.... !

My biggest concern is online play; I got everything I need now to exploit the PS3, but I love Borderlands and maybe a couple of other multi-player online games. The hardest decision is risking the ability of losing online connectivity with Sony. I honestly don't feel like buying a seperate one for backups or homebrew only.

My biggest concern is when will the online cheating start...

Doesnt expecting the unexpected make the unexpected expected and therefore mean youre expecting the expected which was the unexpected until you expected it?

Ok,i have a TI-83 Plus laying around. Will i be able to use that, or must it be exactly a TI-84? There is also a TI USB Connectivity Kit i can get for it,if that helps. Thanks in advance.

Is the TI-84 a work in progress or has it been hacked already?

The TI-84 hack reputedly works, and it has been updated to the latest version (@brandonlwilson on twitter). It must be a TI-84 -- not an 83. The 83 does not have a USB controller on-board, and this hack relies on the presence of the usb controller.

Gee... I wonder if this would have happened so quickly if Sony would have just LEFT OTHER OS ALONE!!!
