Mad Catz will replace any controllers blocked by latest PS3 firmware update

article published on 27 September, 2010

Following many reports that Sony's latest PlayStation 3 firmware update, version 3.50, blocks third-party controllers, popular accessory maker Mad Catz has said it will replace any affected controller. That being said, Mad Catz says that "all Mad Catz products will continue to function" even after the update, with the exception of a few models from 2008 and earlier. 3.50, as reported ... [ read the full article ]

Ahhh there it is... "Within Warranty." Hopefully the controllers that were sold before 2008 have a 3 year warranty.

sony again blocking competition with their monopolistic behaviour proving that 3rd party manufactures are more loyal to the gaming community by replacing blocked controllers.

waiting for the fanboys & stooges to write "you wouldnt put a ford part on a bmw now would you"!

Mad Catz are not compelled to do this so good for them.

Q. "counterfeit PlayStation 3 Wireless Controllers" had been discovered that "may ignite or explode," according to a consumer alert they released alongside the 3.50 update.

Source for these "exploding" controllers?

i read through it like water. this was there goal all along. they've gotten away with taking away a selling point otherOS. what make you think there going to stop there.

the next move for Sony is to abolish Free Net play, its coming just wait. they'll make an excuse like

"to upgrade are network for up coming games and to ensure are consumers get the best possible experience we at Sony have decided to move away from are Free to play platform for 5 dollars a month you can enjoy the new PSN experience. (Marketing PR goes here)"

Looks like Sony is choosing the Crapple mentality. "It's my hardware. You're just renting it. We can make changes to any part of the software at anytime. Now where's my rattle and binky..."

I'm kinda happy my PS3 is the only Sony thing I have. Blu-ray is nice. It's more of a media platform for me, however the new Boxee Box may replace it as it supports MKV containers.

I wonder how much of this might be a side effect of killing the USB hack allowing the play of "backups"? I mean if you suddenly drasticly limit what can connect to the system it would be easy for them to make a list of approved items that identify themselves...

Just my $0.02,

I can understand blocking out bootleg software, I can even see where they are coming from (although I don't agree)when it comes to removing the "other OS" feature but blocking out third party hardware is a bunch of crap. It will eventually come to a point where ALL third party hardware is locked out and you will have to register your controller to your console. Buy a new console? You have to buy a new controller with it.

3.50, as reported by angry PS3 owners, blocks third party peripherals, accessories and USB storage devices.
Am I the only one who caught this? Who gives 2 shits about 3rd party controllers if disabling them will effect external hard drives and flash drives. What's next, no more memory stick functionality? Can someone confirm this?

Sony is really starting to fuck themselves more and more with their 3rd console. The momentum they had in 95 is now coming to a halt. Next thing you know, they're going to start blatantly stealing ideas from other conso... oh, thats right.

Don't forget they also removed ps1/2 compatibility.
This is their 3rd strike.

It wouldn't be a huge jump...there are already games that won't work online, except on the first system they were installed on.

I doubt this has anything to do with the jailbreak; it would not be at all difficult to modify PSgroove to identify itself as a DS3.

Ok so we have 3 apparent strikes that Sony has committed.

First, Backwards Compatibility was removed AFTER it was a selling point to would be consumers............Nice!

Second, They removed OtherOS, yet another HUGE selling point, not only to the regular consumers, but to Governments, Universities, etc..............................Brilliant!

Third, A blatant lie about possible "explosions" occuring when attempting to use a "third party" device, resulting in an update that renders certain peripherals useless. (Years after the consumers have already purchased these peripherals)..................................Beautiful!

Problem is, everyone who was suckered in to buying a PS3, everyone who is a "fanboy", all the parents who really have no clue as to whats going on with their 300 dollar purchase, will still support this company. What needs to be done is a boycott, stop supporting their system, stop buying the games. Purchase a different console, switch to PC gaming, DON'T BUY SONY PRODUCTS PERIOD. No movies, games, usb drives, blank media, televisions, blu-ray/dvd players, etc. Only through this process will a change happen, but unfortunately we live in a world where people are addicted to this shit and where people would rather complain about the situation. Stand up, take a deep breath, and and realize the sun will still come up tomorrow if you boycotted Sony and other companies of this nature.

Just my 2 cents, I will rest knowing this news doesn't effect me, I don't buy Sony.

@Jemborg, your response "another boycott?!?" says it all. If consumers as a whole would have completed the initial "boycott", we wouldn't be talking about this new information that has come to light. A true boycott is held once. Period. A true consumer revolution would null and void any of the things Sony has been pulling. It is only because no one holds true to the boycott that Sony is allowed to repeatedly control, manipulate, and rip off its consumers.

Bottom line is this, everyone has to accept responsibility for their actions and understand that somethings in life that seem unfair or wrong are a direct result to the choices they make. Take for example me, If i were to go out and buy a PS3, with all the knowledge of what is actually going on with Sony's unethical business practices, I would not have the right to log on to a forum and bitch and moan about anything that Sony does to make the PS3 less enjoyable to me. Why? Because I as a consumer would have done the research about the product I am willing to spend my hard earned money on. I have no one to blame but myself for continuing to purchase a product from a company that has shit on consumers in the past and given their track record will continue to do so. Screw me once and same on you, screw me twice, I'm the fool.

If you think about it, Sony controllers have the highest possibility of exploding because of using Lithium Ion batteries and with the numerous Sony battery recalls in the past.

Of all the BS I've ever heard from Phony that has got to take the cake.

@Philosoweed: True... unfortunately we all have to live with compromises in life to some extent... and no one seems happy enough with that usually.
