Mad Catz will replace any controllers blocked by latest PS3 firmware update

article published on 27 September, 2010

Following many reports that Sony's latest PlayStation 3 firmware update, version 3.50, blocks third-party controllers, popular accessory maker Mad Catz has said it will replace any affected controller. That being said, Mad Catz says that "all Mad Catz products will continue to function" even after the update, with the exception of a few models from 2008 and earlier. 3.50, as reported ... [ read the full article ]

Hey, I don't care because I stopped purchasing "S" products when Afterdawn reported on their very first DRM. I do not plan to purchase "S" products ever again.

How on Earth could a controller explode? Maybe the rechargeable batteries in a wireless one might explode but not any old controller. Just sounds like another excuse for limiting what can be connected to the PS3 to what Sony allows. Sony is becoming and more like Apple in this regard. Nothing but OUR peripherals are good enough for OUR products. What a load of horse puckies.

Second, They removed OtherOS, yet another HUGE selling point, not only to the regular consumers, but to Governments, Universities, etc..............................Brilliant!

Third, A blatant lie about possible "explosions" occuring when attempting to use a "third party" device, resulting in an update that renders certain peripherals useless. (Years after the consumers have already purchased these peripherals)..................................Beautiful!

Problem is, everyone who was suckered in to buying a PS3, everyone who is a "fanboy", all the parents who really have no clue as to whats going on with their 300 dollar purchase, will still support this company. What needs to be done is a boycott, stop supporting their system, stop buying the games. Purchase a different console, switch to PC gaming, DON'T BUY SONY PRODUCTS PERIOD. No movies, games, usb drives, blank media, televisions, blu-ray/dvd players, etc. Only through this process will a change happen, but unfortunately we live in a world where people are addicted to this shit and where people would rather complain about the situation. Stand up, take a deep breath, and and realize the sun will still come up tomorrow if you boycotted Sony and other companies of this nature.

Just my 2 cents, I will rest knowing this news doesn't effect me, I don't buy Sony.

Only thing I'm going to disagree with here is the PC Gaming. I'm sorry but I love consoles for the reason that ALL games WORK on them. I've watched friends play games on their PC and they lag to shit or straight up crash. I get it they need better hardware, but to constantly update that hardware is a bit pricy to say the least. I'd rather spend money on one piece of hardware and have it last (hopefully) 6 years while playing every game "flawlessly."

Upgrade times depend on the tech you decide to throw in your PC, if you throw in a GFX card and processor from the last generation you can usually get a good 2-3 years before an upgrade. throw in the latest and greatest thing and you can get a good 4-6 years easy.

Consoles usually cheat on eyecandy and often employ low resolution passed through a chip dedicated to scaling up an image.

Absolutely correct.

And if you love using a controller, as I do, you can employ the brilliant and cheap Xpadder app.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

Well when the newest processor (only the processor...) is roughly $300, and both consoles (including graphics card, compatible motherboard (because I know newest processors, from Intel at least, force you to get a new motherboard that's compatible), etc.) I feel like I'm saving money going with the consoles.

Edited: replaces cards with processors. That's what I meant to say and I went on with "including graphics card..." so that's why I put cards by accident.

Not sure I'd get an Intel GFX card.

Still it depends on what you want, if you want to game at 1080p or higher with decent AA then a PC is the go.

But see with a PC, you can almost bypass any unethical restraint they try to impose. With PC gaming, YOU CONTROL the hardware (and software if you know how to program a little.) You also have the ability to add emulators to your arsenal, which turns you PC into a virtual "console" system for almost every pre-gen system out there. WoW was created 6 years ago, and it is still installed and plays great on a system I built 7 years ago. Which by console standards is roughly 1 1/2 generations. Pros and cons to both i suppose, but I'd rather stick to a system that allows me to control what I can and can't do.

Haha sorry that was a typo (which I just edited) I definitely meant processor on that one. I wouldn't go with an Intel GFX card either :p I got EVGA 8600GT still which, since I don't game allll that much on a PC, works great.
