Hi all
I see many users experiencing problems with discs etc
I use only Ritek Go 4 Discs bought from
Budget Computing in Glasgow.
These discs have orange tops and are printed DVD-R 4x
I believe these to be Grade A Media and have never had any problems with them.
They Cost £15 for 25 however buying in bulk would cost less.
Please... if your having problems buy Ritek GO 4 DVD-R
There great

Coming up on Ebay in two weeks, I (Ebay Power Seller) will be selling True Ritek Grade A DVD-R Inkjet Printable, as supplied to ritek (Conrexx) to one of only 3 official UK dealers, so u can guarantee their quality. The price will be better than what you mentioned above, and should be the best prices for Ritek G04 4-8x discs anywhere on the net.
I'll update you all when this happens.

If you're looking for a printer I got a canon i865 from currys in east kilbride and I don't have a bad word to say about it. It's the best printer I've ever used. I actually intended to gey the model below but this printer is superb.

as for your discs, I've tried the barras and other assorted computer shops and I reckon you'd still be better with digitalpromo.co.uk cos you get next day delivery and the media is 100% grade A

doc409:
Printables have a matt white top side so you can run them through a printer that has a caddy to take 2 discs at a time to put an image on the surface, some of the larger Epsons can do this.I use printables because some people reckon that when burning the laser reflects off the underside of the white surface therefore getting a better burn.Dont know if its true, but no coasters so far out of 127 burns. Thanks for the info. I was very interested in the Canon i865, but there doesn't seem to be a USA equivalent yet. So, I opted for the R200, which should be here this week (along with a stack of white Ritek's).

I use an Epson PhotoStylus 900 for printing DVDs (and CDs). Not the greatest dpi ever but then the media surface is hardly photo paper either!
Cheers

Greta...welcome to the forum. Since I have a DRU-530A burner, I can give some initial advice that will get you ready to backup/burn DVD's.
1. Install a DVD viewer like WinDVD,PowerDVD, or MyDVD. I believe one of these came on CD with the Sony. Then put a DVD movie in, and you will be prompted to choose your region code.
2. The DRU-530A also requires a firmware upgrade. You will need this if you don't want problems. Go here for the download: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru530adwn.htm#dwns
3. There are also other important downloads here like a drive check diagnostic, and related software fixes. D/L the proper ones...including the ASPI fix. Many users have ASPI problems.
4. You did not mention what burner program you have, but Record Now comes with the 530A. As you want to backup DVD's, I strongly urge you to remove any Roxio software...as this is known to cause conflicts. Even the Sony info advises this. If you have Nero Ultra 6 installed, I would advise you stay with it and not install the Record Now burner.
5. You didn't mention your system specs. If you are using an older, slower computer, this could give you problems. Opinions vary, but I would set a minimum baseline at 800MHz CPU and 256MB RAM. I would also suggest Win2K or XP as your OS because it supports the larger NTFS file size.
6. I have found that just about any kind of media works with my 530A...once I upgraded it. Various brands of the -R and +R work fine. Once upgraded, the +R will burn at 4X and the -R at 8X. I personally use Ritek G04 +R because I believe it will provide the greatest archive life. Time will tell.
7. As far as the actual back-up process goes, that is discussed in other sections of the forum. Opinions vary. Personally, I believe the DVD Decrypter-DVD2One-Nero burn is the least likely to cause problems for a beginner...because it takes you through each step of the process, and if something goes wrong, you know where the problem likely is. Others will advise using DVD Shrink (freeware) and your Record Now burning software as a simplified solution. The later would be the least expensive for you.
good luck.
