PS3 hacker's home raided, Sony sues after he retaliates

article published on 25 February, 2011

On the 23rd, hacker "graf_chokolo" said his home was raided by local police, as well as a Sony representative. Says graf via his own blog: Guys, SONY was today at my home with police and got all my stuff and accounts. So be careful from now on. After the raid, graf (Alexander Egorenkov), uploaded all his databases to the Web, encouraging anyone and everyone to share it so Sony ... [ read the full article ]

The fact of the matter is if you can't afford a awesome computer then you probably are not inclined to do any actual hacking, coding or anything necessary to back up what you are saying

Most of the scene is not rich...many cannot afford a $10,000 IBM Cell Server, and the few who can would rather get essentially the same thing but with less memory for $300 (still more than it costs to build). On top of that, a game or app that only runs on $10,000 IBM servers wouldn't be useful to many people, would it? ...But what about an MKV player that runs on a device that was sold with the claims that it would work as a media player? That just might be useful.

Yes, the authors knew that doing research to return the illegally removed features would enable others to enable piracy, but they had no choice...there was no other legal way to do it (using Sony code would have been illegal). Anyway, it isn't like they invented piracy or something...with the exception of PS exclusives, everything was already pirated and playing online on every other platform. Saying that you want to stop piracy by going after PS3 hackers is like saying that you want to preserve the integrity of a wall that has crumbled to dust, by shooting the guy who finds one solid brick somewhere under all the rock powder.

As for online cheating, that had always been there, even on the PS3, even before the jailbreak. The games change, the methods change, even the platforms change, but there are always people exploiting the holes in a game to cheat online. Sony claiming that they can do nothing about this when PC games do things about this is just BS.

Also before any trolls start posting any response's I realize Sony does not directly profit from online multi-player for the most part but it does affect the bottom line of game sales when directly related to their online experience. These abilities for using home-brew have way mores cons than pro's. I for one say buy a computer and quit trying to make a game console a pc. If your that cheap sale your playstation and buy a computer quit ruining it for everyone else.
Even if you are right (IMO, you are not) Sony are still being thuggy assholes about it.

Sony was allowed on the raid onto someone's private premises? Participate in removing property? And then allowed to ask the guy asinine questions? And then allowed to hand out a 3/4 million fine? WTF?

Tell me Andre, where the hell was this? Sonyville? Cloud cuckoo land?

And pardon my ignorance but what is his HV?

The guy sounds like he has a touch of asperger's. Still people should be allowed to do what they want with the device if they bought it. Sony can make claims about "Terms and conditions" but that's toothless depending on the laws of the various countries. I know people that want to use them for render farms.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

Raid happened in Germany and HV refers to hypervisor.

I feel a rather sorry for the dude, I believe that Sony intend to make an example of him and make his life a living hell.

It won't matter how guilty or within his rights he is, Sony will do a Scientology number on him. That is, abuse the legal system, hound him till he has nothing. He will be sucked into never ending court appearances, fees etc.

It's rather depressing, to top it off, it will do absolutely nothing to deter other hackers. the only winners will be the lawyers.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

I'm not a cop so I don't know how it really works.

This all just seems a little over board and Sony needs to grow up and stop suing everyone and everything. Someone needs to open an account, link it to a rock in the desert, and see if Sony will sue it. I bet they would.
This ain't TV land... it's real life, and these people need to understand that, if you want to hack stuff and it going to cause said company lose cash and want to play with the big boys, you'll need to be ready to get turfed big time too.

It's not always fun and games and no one cares.

The stuff he is doing is completely reverse engineering the Play station OS and really... whats the point? of doing that.

It has nothing to do with bringing back Linux on a play station, it's simply someone trying to completely screw over the OS and make their own system that plays play station games and what ever else.

These are sold as game consoles not Linux boxes.

Just tell them to buy the Cell chip servers they are designed to handle that stuff as you can get them with a few gig or more ram etc

Even duel Cell servers as well.

Bit silly trying to convert a PS3 into a render farm when you can buy something that will do the job a billion times better.

I just can't see how rendering a 1080P frame that's 30gigs of data will work in a memory space of 256meg of ram, on a box that isn't even designed to handle rendering farm duties.

But the original version WAS sold and advertised as running Linux... Removal of features after purchase is even worse than falsely advertising it in the first place, Sony deserve to be lynched.

I personally haven't given a cent to Sony for about 10 years. I suggest everyone else boycott them too, they've screwed too many people for too long.

And by the way, what is with blaming the hackers for the actions of cheaters? Guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people.

That's the whole purpose of a cluster (doesn't matter if it's a render farm or not). It only needs enough memory to handle the chunk of data it's doing at any given time, not the whole job, and it's not a question of if the machine was designed for something, but if the software exists to do it.

@Xtago - I think everyone here supports Sony banning PS3's found to be running custom firmware from the PSN for precisely the reasons you mention. If anyone expects to hack their PS3, they should be ready to be banned. Microsoft's been doing it for years.

Personally, I love the fact the PS3 has been hacked wide open. It means there will be a use for these boxes well beyond Sony's schedule to junk them. The earlier they're hacked the better because people have a much more mature platform to build on while interest is hot. It seems the PS2 didn't start getting apps till later in life and they didn't mature very well. The media players for my PS2 were pretty substandard and none of the FTP servers were very good because none seemed to have security. With the PS3 being mostly built on a linux platform, I expect to see much higher quality applications than what existed in the homebrew scene for the PS2. I'd still be using an XBox as a XBMC frontend if they had HDMI.

I paid $500 for my ps3 when I got it. I should be able to do whatever I want with it. If sony wants to try to stop us from hacking our ps3s then thats fine. If they want to give security updates that is fine. If they want to ban hacked consoles from connecting to PSN thats fine too..thats how its always been.. remember with the xbox 1? But they should NOT be going after the people who make it possible to hack these things. We do this as a hobby.

I have a hacked ps3 and I will never try to get on PSN. Why? Because its hacked and I know that I can get banned. To me its not worth it to lose my PSN. If I ever wanna go on PSN I will undo the hack on my ps3.

I think all of us hackers should stay off PSN. Call it a trade-off.

ps: one thing that pisses me off is how I have to connect to PSN to go on Netflix. I hope someone makes a workaround to that.

All of this and still, Sony >>>> Micro$oft. What sony is doing is still better than M$ knowingly selling their paperweight 360s.

I'm better with the fact that i lost other OS on my $500 PS3 and it still works after 5+ years, than if I had gone through 3-4 $300-$400 360s during that time.

also comparing the PS3 to PC is like comparing a Ferrari to a Ford 4x4. the PS3 has one of the most powerful computational Processors many have every seen and at around 300 bucks. i for one want to see what it can really do, even if it means cracking the system wide open.

Yeah well that makes you one of the cheapskates I was talking about. The fact of the matter is if you can't afford a awesome computer then you probably are not inclined to do any actual hacking, coding or anything necessary to back up what you are saying. I also believe that if you where you would realize that a operating system be it linux or otherwise does not exist to actually capitalize on the performance gain of a cell processor or else it would actually already be a offering in the pc market. The people who made these hacks realized what all would happen when they started their project and should sleep in the bed that they made. You saying that its not the hackers fault that online play is ruined is like saying that the nazi soldiers are not responsible for all the genocide just because they where following orders.
and uh oh dear leader ... how many cell architecture computers do you have? Hmmm ... ZERO? Your 5000usd computer can't hold a candle to the amount of data a true cell can rummage through. Hmmm ... ZERO? So How on earth would you even know that linux/other os won't scream running one? Why the fk would it even have to be linux or other os? The fact here is YOU DON'T KNOW... nobody knows .. we are just at the tip of the iceburg with cell capabilities. so go back in your hole while people like myself try and work with other folks like me ... then maybe after we get the cell streamlined for everyone and everyday use you can go spend your 5grand and build a cell-based computer/ps3 on our backs...and get the parts from newegg.

Your comparison to price is totally meaningless ... actually very immature and idiotic. You don't compare gasoline to diesel.

While your PC sounds like a jet turbine and burns up ever-growing amounts of coal ... us cheapskates help bring new technology to the masses ..in ways never even thought of.

Lastly ... youre that guy that can't think past the gate or out of the box if you will ... your type could have never envisioned a simple webcam (kinect) is capable of finding lost people in mountains... damn cheapskates ..why not spend a billion dollars on helicopters and such. go away edited by ddp
