Judge gives Sony the right to acquire all IP addresses of visitors to Geohot site

article published on 5 March, 2011

A federal judge has ruled this week that Sony can subpoena the Web host for George 'Geohot' Hotz's website, and acquire all the IP addresses of anyone who has visited his site in the last 26 months. Furthermore, Sony also won subpoenas for data from YouTube, and for Geohot's Twitter account. Sony has accused Hotz of violating the DMCA by publishing a master key for the PS3 that allows ... [ read the full article ]

If you're all not already boycotting Sony products, you should probably start right now.

I don't understand why I cannot buy a device and run whatever programs on it I want.

Didn't I buy the thing and am I not allowed to use it how I want?

So does this mean if someone hacks my email or facebook, i can get the courts to force them to turn over all the ip's from these sites?

What does visiting a site or watching a video going to prove? I visited the the site AND i watched the video...but i didn't hack my PS3 because i don't see a need to do that. I have no problem buying my games at all, and i have no desire to risk bricking my PS3 on someones wonky, pieced together, half-assed custom firmware.
So what are they going to sue ME for?
Because i was interested in what they did? It's not against the law to look. And my lawyer is family so they better be ready for all out war at no cost to me if they dare subpoena me just for looking.

Also I've been a long time supporter of boycotting Sony. I bought my PS3 at a pawn shop used (no money to Sony) I buy ALL my games used (no money to sony or developers) I buy all my peripherals used too (no money to sony) It sucks to wait and buy a game months later used instead of at launch...but i think they've way overstepped their bounds and i refuse to support them.

I guess I don't know Sony's end game here. Great you now have the IP addresses of people who visited the site. What are they going to do with that information? I mean, how many of those people even have PS3s? My guess is that they are going to try and filter the IP addresses against the PS online IP addresses to make a group to further narrow down anyone that may be pirating and go from there. I doubt they would straight up ban any matching the same IP address because they would then be putting their company in line with a class action lawsuit without proof that a violation has occured. That is just my forecast. Sony is showing some teeth.

before everyone gets too fired up , remember that direct tv sued everyone that had anything to do with hacking their system . it cost them a lot of money and court time for very little gain , but they did it anyway .

Yea Sony has my IP, now what are you going to with it? My console isn't hacked, are you going to sue me for looking at sites? Okay then.

What I expect to happen is sony will match the IPs to the same ones dedicated to your PSN account *as long as the PS3 is registered under the same name as your ISP it should give them the intel they seek*. Basically if they see you did not hack your PS3 and that its on the correct official firmware enabled on PSN, they will not pursue charges. Tho, likely, they'll put those of us who have a hack free system, on a watch list; as they'll be worried they would be hacked.

I would really laugh tho if California rules in favor of altering the DMCA like they did with Apple's iphone. Then all Sony can do then is ban people, they won't be able to take them to court over it.

Everybody needs to make this story go Viral immediately Sony is going to a path beyond the Microsoft Case..a dangerous path, their greed and jealousy is getting the best of them. They themselves broke the law in 2005. Sony made computers got weakened by drm in their music cds that opened up backdoors with no uninstall. It got so bad the DHL(Department of Homeland Security) got involved besides states suing Sony.

Hell Kevin Butler one of their own posted the Root Key of the PS3 by accident but does Sony fire his ass...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO course not.

It is doubtful that they would pursue charges anyway against a volume that large (greater than 1000). For starters it would be too costly for getting little if any return and would negativly impact their consumer base to the public. Chances are they would just ban just like MS for TOS.

Yeah i think this is more likely to prove from the access logs who was actually feeding information into the site and not to start any attack on those who then sought the information.

.... but still sony, this has now gotten to a situation that has got so miss managed its not even funny any more. If you reading this its time to take the monkeys of the PR machine and let in some real help...

.... Ultimately sony this may not be immediately costing you but the long term damage prospects are the real concern and take a long hard look at your ten year game plan and where this is going to cause it go.

Its not to late sony .... not yet, its one thing to make a mistake and then try and correct it, its another thing to make it, ignore the knock on effect and then when it starts to rain you realise its to late to go and get the umbrella.

think about it guys . . .

If your a contributor and not a consumer there is a difference from sony's point of view, they don't really like either at the moment, but I think feel they have to peruse someone or something and they feel this is the best way to do it.

Its not, its just sony dont understand why...
