A federal judge has ruled this week that Sony can subpoena the Web host for George 'Geohot' Hotz's website, and acquire all the IP addresses of anyone who has visited his site in the last 26 months.
Furthermore, Sony also won subpoenas for data from YouTube, and for Geohot's Twitter account.
Sony has accused Hotz of violating the DMCA by publishing a master key for the PS3 that allows ... [ read the full article ]

I also boycott Sony's products and have done so for many years now, mainly because of their shenanigans regarding DRM on MiniDisc recorders, ie: you don't have the right to upload your own personnal recordings via the USB port.
As I don't own a PS3 I'm not familiar with this "homebrew" firmware. But if someone wants to risk messing up their PS3 that's their business.
Reading all your comments proves that I'm not wrong in steering clear of this company's products. Looking back over the years since I stopped buying Sony, they have missed out on thousands of pounds worth of business in money I've spent on non-Sony merchandise; ie: TV sets, Computers, HiFi and DVD players etc etc.
Instead of taking George Hotz to court they should have offered him a position with the company; they could do with employing people who have a little creative imagination.
I hope that George challenges this ruling that the hearing be held in a place other than where the alleged offence took place.
Yes Newbie Spammer; "Legally" they may have the right. Morally they don't!
I will continue to spread the word and hopefully their market share will be reduced to zero.

This is stupid, if Sony gets the e-mail info etc. from all that viewed the video, what good is that? I imagine that there were more than a few that did and they are probably owners of the ps3 so if they prosecute/persecute them it seems they are cutting off some of their own bottom line profits. if i were a ps3 owner, i would move on to nintendo or elsewhere.

Sony should plow some of that cash back into Japan and help some people instead of wasting funds trying to make a point.

Sony did donate stuff to help out Japan's earthquake and tsunami (among other tech companies)... Yes, Sony can donate more using the funds from this "ridiculous" witch hunt, but that's saying governments should stop spending money on wars and spend that money on feeding helpless kids instead...
Peace!

Governments are always run by the greedy and wicked. Until this changes war and hunger will always be.
Saying that.... This world is done anyway.
The atmosphere is collapsing, global volcanic activity increasing big time along with earthquakes and the magnetosphere is screwed.
I'm gonna enjoy what time we have left here because we don't know how long it's gonna last.
I warned people about a tidal wave in the Pacific last Wednesday on Facebook and they just laughed until the next day. Glad FB has a date and time stamp!

I believe my time is too valuable to waste it with companies like sony. When they introduced DRMs and rootkits I stopped purchasing ALL sony and sony-related products. Problem is people keep purchasing sony products therefore sony will survive. People: Read the EULAs. If you don't like it, go elsewhere. I just feel bad for the folks who got ripped off by sony when it introduced the nasty firmware update.

I was going to buy a music CD entitled "Metallic Spheres" By The Orb and Dave Gilmour. Unfortunately I noticed that this is made by Sony. I will not be buying it now.
Incidentally I've bought Sony CDs in the past and found the sound quality to be poor; they are tinny and lack bass. Clearly Sony are trying to make the CD go the same way as the MiniDisc by making it sound worse than an MP3.
And don't get me started on the Rootkit thing.....
