Chief Financial Officer confirms that increased R&D costs in Sony's books are largely due to next generation console development.
Masaru Kato, Sony CFO and executive video president, was asked about the increased costs of research and development for the company, following the release of its annual earnings report on Thursday.

Devs are yet to create software that pushes the Ps3s hardware limits so wtf would they even consider r&d at this point? Especially after the recent fiasco. This company really makes me wonder
It'll cost $800! and come with a 4D Blu-Ray player! That you'll need a Sony 4D TV to play on! And the games will only cost $95! And there'll be twice a week uninterrupted online multiplayer! For free! (minus the cost of your internet bill after the 4 TB of patches and required firmware updates)

LoL...probably not 4TB worth of patches; if I know sony, they will use the smallest, cheapest hard drives they can find, and they will allow for hard disk upgrades, but only up to a certain randomly chosen point.
You forgot some features too...
-OtherOS is back (for the first year)
-Will have built-in DVD-ripping
-Will have an Orwellian rootkit
-Will have support for PS1-PS3 games, plus PSP (at least the launch model will support this; later models will drop PS3 support)
-Will have a double-sided blueray drive that can read both sides of a double-sided, 4-layer-per-side disk at once...it will be disabled after two years in order to force people to use the PSN store for their games and movies.
-Will have less total memory than the average gamer video card
-Will have a 50-core cell with 40 cores disabled. Hackers will be able to enable these cores quickly, and they will use this as an excuse to remove OtherOS.
You guys aren't thinking next-gen enough. It will have a GreenRay player that uses discs that hold as much data as three double-sided BluRay discs but on mini-disc sized media. This of course will justify the exorbitant price of both system and games. Everything else that you guys have said sounds about right.
