Go Daddy lost 37,000 domains before pulling their SOPA support

article published on 25 December, 2011

According to info collected by The Domains, 37,000 domains were pulled from Go Daddy after it was revealed they were formal supporters of the draconian censorship bill dubbed SOPA. Within 2 days, Go Daddy had switched their stance, but the damage had already been done. Many of the domains transferred to companies like NameCheap, who are staunch opponents of the bill. Normally $10 is for the grandmothers, more like $30 for a 5 page site. These idiots lost half a million+ in less time than it takes to get in & out of a weekend bachelor party in Vegas.

This is just the starters folks. Hit these bastards right where it hurts folks, their wallets. But I'm telling you, get them with a lawyer. It hurts even worse.

Yeah, it's important to remember domain registration, and the free webpages that go with it, are actually a small part of their business. Where they make a lot more money are the hosting and email plans, particularly when you start adding on a few extras. Even for a relatively low end account, you can easily get up to $40 - $50 a year for a single domain.

I couldn't see it hurting them much as they are in Australia and probably charge double or triple the US amount.

Not a big fan of Godaddy after finding out they sell domain names in bulk so spammers can pay less than $5 per domain. Cheap disposable domains they throw away after about a week, making it impossible to block. Godaddy was also hosting the e-mail on some of them as well. What legitimate business needs to buy hundreds of random domains at a time?
