I'm a newbie here and looking for a lot of help. I have 2 small kids that seem to love to scratch their PS2 games. I would like to get a mod chip so that I can use backup games. Can anyone guide me through this process. What mod chip, what backup software? I also heard that there is no soder mod chips available. Is this true?

to play ur games first off u will need to mod ur ps2 with either a modchip, swap magic discs, or a harddrive. i suggest getting a mod chip but its up to you. personally i have a Duo 2 SE that i ordered from impactmods.com for only 18 bucks. if ur not good at soldering u should get Swap Magic Discs. to back up your games you will need a software program. i recommend DVD decrypter or alcohol 120%. It is true that there are no solder modchips but u will still need to purchase swap magic discs or gameshark 2 (version 2) to boot the games. if u have ne more questions ask.

For a good reliable modchip like the dms3 they can range from $50-$70(£30-£50). You can get one from any good website such as www.modchipman.com or www.modchip.ca. If you are good at soldering and have a steady hand then they are relatively easy to fit, you just got to follow the install diagrams(if you are not good at soldering dont attempt it, let a pro do it for you).
To burn ps2 games you are going to need a dvd burner(or cd burner if you want the hassle), and burning software, i suggest DVD Decrypter as it is very good(can be found in software).

nelswick- thanks for the assistance.

Do the mod chips come with clear instructions for installation. I know how to soder but I'm not strong with electrical blueprints!

Also, will I be able to play orginal games with a mod chip installed.

Telman, depending on where you buy, modchips do come with clear instructions on where to solder the wires to and their are various guides on the internet with tips and where to solder the wires also. Your ps2 will be the same as before the mod, but will be able to play your backups, meaning you will still be able to play your originals and dvds. I use dvd decrypter to backup my games and never had a problem with it.

So you will need:
a modchip(dms3, magic v, duo2 etc),
15-30 watt soldering iron,
solder,(rosin core)
flux paste(for some of the smaller points),
and the wires for the modchip which you can purchase with the chip.

A dvd burner to burn your games onto,
dvd decrypter to get a image of your game to burn,
and a bit of knowledge which you can get from the ever wonderful afterdawn, lol.

Hope you get your ps2 modded and up and running your backups.

Your brother obviously doesnt know what he is on about because you need to modify your ps2 in some way whether it be a fliptop, slide card or a modchip. I always recommmend the dms3 as it is reliable and is future proof and the magic v which is very reliable. There are other ways which cost less but these 2 chips are the best.

Does the magic 3.2 work? Is it easy to use? is there anything better out to use? I'd appreciate any helpful response to this message.

Hi, i'm totally new in this and i'm about to buy a mod chip, i have 2 choices, either Duo 2 SE (which is cheaper) or then DMS3 (which is more expensive, but is more popular atleast on this site). So is there a point paying more for DMS3, if yes then why? What's the difference?

Please help me guys, the choice u suggest i'll do! And thanks alot in advance!!!!

Well if you have the money then go for the dms3. It is future proof as the firmware can be upgraded via cd as new protection comes out. Duo2 is a good chip but if newere games come out that cant be played with duo2 then a new modchip will be in order which in the end will probably cost you more than the dms3.

Ok i guess while i was thinking they ran out of both of those chips, now they have only chip called Gameloader2, they say its better and is tested, although i think the real name of the product is Messiah2. What do u think about Messiah2, or have u heard bout Gameloader2?

Messiah 2 is a good chip even though it is a bit old now. Order from someone else such as modchipman.com very reliable, and get the dms3. You could also get the matrix infinity off that site a very good chip also.

You dont need a rgb cable but if you are playing a PAL game on a NTSC tv then it will be black and white, if you have a rgb cable then the game will play in colour. It also gives a better picture.

As i seaid you dont really need one of these, just if you are going to be playing different region games on a different region tv.

I'm about to purchase a DMS3. I've heard that modchipman has great deals so I was looking there. I have a friend that can soder but how hard is it to actually do this. Also, what kind of wires do I need.

Hi guys,

I have one of those blue PS2 discs (Tekken Tag) it's not silver on the underside like most PS2 game cd's.

What I was wondering was if I could make a back up of this disc because DVD Decryter doesn't seem to read the cd at all.

Many thanks.
