Apple loses patent case to Samsung in Japan

Over the past week, there has been a lot reported on Apple's victory over Samsung in the U.S. over 7 claims of patent infringement.
A jury ruled that Samsung owes Apple $1.05 billion for the infringement, and Apple is seeking an injunction on some of its rival's older devices, like the Galaxy S II.

It seem that Samsung is winning all over the planet except the USA. I wonder why?? Only apple lover would give them a free ride.

I think this juror, who has come out with comments about the case has made the judgment even more ill judged, other countries like Germany UK and Holland have thrown the case out, and now Korea and Japan have sided with Samsung but Korea also found for apple. The problem is that the rest of the world might get things that the USA want.
I was also surprised when some tech journalist claimed this would help innovation and prices for consumers, how thats going to happen. the idea of Patents is you can use a thing if you agree a license fee, which all that needs to be done.
Also i don't think its an American thing, i.e bias, but you do wonder what about Samsung claims for infringement

Back when my wife first got her galaxy s2 I immediately said it was just a cheap version of ios, alot of it is identicle, for example, when u load the camera up, the little slide button to change it from still shots to video is the same, so I can't understand why anyone with half a brain would rule in favour of Samsung!!

It is a cheap version of iOS. If by cheap you mean that it is inexpensive and by version of iOS you mean a smartphone operating system.

I saw the news Samsung owns a lot of 4G LTE patents, not surprising since Samsung has been in the Telecom industry for a while. Samsung will sue Apple as soon as Apple puts LTE in its phone, sounding like anybody making LTE phone will have to use Samsung patents. Anyway, Samsung has a lot going for them. They have just about every technology, from the screen, to CPU, to memory, to telecom technologies. And the most formidable weapon Korean work attitude. Look how they surpassed Japan in consumer electronics. Apple's dominance won't be for long. Enjoy the victory when you can, Apple. How long Apple can ride this? Samsung already sells the most mobile phones in the world. Selling the most smartphones is a matter of a very short time.

Are you joking? Never before has a company been so vehemently opposed to giving it's customers the freedom of choice as Apple; they constantly sue jailbreak engineers and patch holes in order to force you to stay in their little box.
Android lets you do everything you could do with an iPhone and more without jailbreaking it, because they know that their customers want to have complete operational control of their device.
I hope you never drop your iPhone, because if it's jailbroken (a very simple test will confirm), then they won't replace it. Don't have to worry about that with an Android phone.

I'm well aware of the fact android doesn't need jailbreaking, like I already said my wife has one and although I do quite like it, the overall usage of the device just doesn't float my metaphorical boat, I can't even explain why, it just doesn't seem right, and the only reason I would switch to the droid is if apple managed to permanently lock down iOS, then I would change (but not to Samsung).
As for droppin it, what kind of mug do u think I am, I would repair any breakage myself, I have repaired many broken iPhones, a monkey could do it and apart from a damaged logic board anything is replaceable!
As for apple been a money magnet, hate the game not the player!

Unfortunately for your original argument, Samsung has nothing to do with the operating system. That would be google that is responsible for the "cheap imitation of iOS". Samsung made the hardware. Doh!

Oy, what a sad defense of iOS. If you really want to use a super-restrictive OS that is slowly becoming closer and closer to becoming "locked down" in favor of Android, which you just can't "feel" (whatever that means), then more power to ya.
I for one enjoy having the knowledge that if I break my phone, regardless of whether I can or cannot repair it myself, Google is willing to repair it completely free of charge, which they have done for me once already. Supporting a company that openly hates its customers as much as Apple does would leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Apple didn't come up with that little button to swap photo/video states.
That was in the WinMobile phones, before Iphones came out.
I guess Microsoft didn't patent that so called tech and Apple found out about that and must think they actually came up with that "tech" to have any sort of patent on it.
Apple has a couple patents but the company with the most patents is actually Samsung, they have around 14,000 patents where as apple only has around 3,000 most must be waste of time patents like the one you brought up about the camera state swap button.
That again has been in Windows Mobiles phones.
I guess MS must have broken the Apple patents if MS have that Apple "tech" in their phones before Apple even had an iOS for phones.
Samsung own the patents for any phone to actually use CDMA/GSM signals in/out of a mobile device, they have design patents for the chips even when other companies still make chips they have to license off Samsung to make those chips.
Apple is going to find it extremely hard to make product whole reason why they have turned to foxconn to make any of their devices, but it's all made with Samsung designed and patented products.
So when you buy an Apple device your really just buying a Samsung device not made by Samsung.

Out of the few people I know who own a Samsung android, I hear a few common things said, like "it will do me" and "well I couldn't afford an iPhone"
In my eyes it's a bit like owning a porche boxter (a Samsung) and telling everyone "it does just as good a job as a Lamborghini gallardo (iPhone), it gets u there fast"
So if convincing yourself that they r just as good helps u sleep better, then (in the words of another person) more power to ya!!

So, comfort yourself with ridiculous notions of quality differences if you feel you must (but nevermind that they are illusory.....iPhones are full of Samsung components), just don't project your silly fanboy attitudes at others when yours are so obvious.
Three concrete elements of the spec stand out for me -
1) the micro sd card slot which works with the new 64gb cards (in addition to the 16gb phone memory, this now makes the phone a serious proposition for HD videoing and
2) replacement batteries, all the smartphones are power-hungry and the ability to have one or two charged spares, or a super-sized spare, is a real bonus and
3) the Android OS is very very easy to use (easily as good as the Apple offering), has vast app support & it is a genuinely open-source software and the phones can be rooted to customise as I please - which also means the level of customising support is also vast.
Apple meanwhile charge a ridiculous premium and do not offer what I would call these obvious and basic flexibilities.
But then that is their way.
I don't like it so I do not give them my custom.
I gained by not buying the iPhone, the Samsung is the superior phone.
Perhaps in Apple fanboy la-la land inferior is better but not in my world.

Lmao, I'm gettin quite bored of reading all the "spec sheet" data of who has the biggest balls, so my closing statement on this thread is this, most of my comments are done just to get people all fired up about stuff, it's just summat to do while I eat my dinner at work, and I too am not loyal to any brand of anything, I just buy what I believe is the best for me, so if your happy with Samsung then that's cool (my wife likes her galaxy s2), and at the end of the day it's just a laugh!

You can't cross license a patent like that if MS own the patent then how is Apple even able to proclaim they even own such a patent when it'd be MS owning the patent.
Let alone Apple attempt to sue another company when A) they don't own the patent and B) claim they actually came up with it.
A licensed patent is payable to the owner of said patent, MS make a couple hundred off every android device sold in the world.
Apple rather than license would rather sue companies.
It's clear that Apple have patented something that was in WinMobile OS but MS haven't patented it but Apple have applied and been given the patent.
That alone should have null and voided the patent and also null and voided this court case from the start.
