Hello ladies and gentlemen, I am very new to this game. I have tried clone dvd and dvd cloner 2 with no luck. I only got them to work kinda half way and was very unsatisfied with the results. I did some searching and ran accross this site and read through the old posts. I then decided to download dvd shrink and dvd decrypter and use them along with sonic my dvd that i already have. Well let me get to my question. If I use decrypter then shrink, willthe file i burn be in true dvd format or in vcd or something like that?

1. you dont need to use DVD Decrypter then dvd shink. DVD Shrink can rip and compress at the same time.
2. the files will be in dvd format.
3. you said you had bad results, which brand media are you using?
V9 PS2, flip top, SMD, DVDLoader
Pioneer 107, ritek g05
DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, Nero

I had bad results when using dvd-cloner and CloneDVD using memorex dvd-r and maxell dvd+r.
Since posting I have sort of figured out how to ust Decrypter and Shrink and I am very happy with the results.
I just backed up my first dvd and it came out excellent. Once I figure out to just let the software do the work and stop trying to over complicate it.

Good idea about not overcomplicating. There are some good guides here at AD and at Doom9.org. DVDshrinkinfo is another site. Looking them over will give you a better idea of how the controls work for the programs.
DVDClone is a rip off of DVD Shrink. They used a cover window to run Shrink in a blind. If you noticed some of the ghost windows flashing occasionally in the background, that was Shrink.
A word about media. It's a nightmare. Brands shop different manufacturers for discs, so the consumer doesn't know what he is getting until it can be checked. DVDIdentifier and DVDInfoPro are tools that can identify the manufacturers. I have Ricohs in 4 brands, Imation, Maxell, Memorex and Verbatim. Luckily Ricoh is supposed to be a good brand. I got some memorex recently which were CMC Magnetics which aren't supposed to be that good for video. So, just buying a brand doesn't insure you will get the same disc each time. Some say Ritek is a good brand. Don't know personally.
If you're going to use Shrink, try the Nero trial. It's the program meant to be used with Shrink. Decrypter was only meant as a backup.

I don't know if I would completely agree with that. When automatic burning functions were added to DVD Shrink, Nero was added first. A short time later the option to automatically use DVD Decrypter was also added. This was because many people want a completely freeware option for backing up DVD's and since DVD Shrink was free, it just made sense to use the free DVD Decrypter for a burning option.
When the new 3.2 version of DVD Shrink is released, along with the new video quality improvements, there are plans to also allow DVD Shrink to make split ISO files that will work on FAT 32 drives and of a type that DVD Decrypter can burn. That will allow users with either NTFS or FAT 32 drives to use DVD Decrypter as their burning option. That is the plan anyway, if the author can get it implimented and working correctly.
I don't think that seems like it is just a secondary backup option. It seems that burning with DVD Decrypter is being given as much priority as burning with Nero.

Looks like you read up on the plans for the new DVD Shrink version 3.2. That new version of Shrink has some nice improvements. I was given a copy of the Beta 3.2b4 to try out and do an analysis. The new program works better under higher compression. The improved version is still being tweaked, but is due out soon according to word from up the ladder. The split ISO option for FAT32 hadn't been incorporated yet, still being worked on. I couldn't have tested anyway as I don't have an older system with FAT32.
DVDShrink has had Nero as the default burner for a long time. DVD Decrypter was listed as a backup burner for quite a while as well. It may not be listed as such on the site any longer. It was until recently. Note however that you are correct. DVD Decrypter would be for those deciding to stay with freeware. Sort of a backup for those folks that don't need a more elaborate burner or choose not to buy one. I would say the majority of people using Shrink use Nero.
DVD Decrypter burns in ISO mode. That sort of means Decrypter is even a limited choice as a burner for it's own capabilities. I lot of people using editing programs use File mode. Decrypter is just limiting with just ISO burn. Shrink and a lot of other programs utilize files other than ISO. So, due to the limitations, I still contend that DVD Decrypter is as said, a backup burner and Nero is accepted as one of the foremost burning ROMs worldwide.
Don't get me wrong. I use ISO files ripped with DVD Decrypter constantly. Decrypter is one of the best rippers to be found, just limited as a burner. Since I have no desire to be constrained by the limits of freeware, I have a number of recording programs. The ability to use those programs with Decrypter as a burner is even more limiting.

brobear, I do agree DVD Decrypter is very limited as a burner, but if you choose for DVD Shrink to output as an ISO image, DVD Decrypter is all you need to burn it.
I would considering it as much a viable option for burning DVD Shrink output as using Nero (or other full-blown burning softwares).
The term "backup", when refering to DVD Decrypter ability to burn, makes it sound like "Well, if Nero doesn't work, use DVD Decrypter".
It would see it more like "If you do not have Nero and are using DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter can be used to burn its output (ISO).". ;)

My intent was not to put down either item. I was pointing out the limitations. For single purpose of burning ISO, Decrypter is a viable option. Didn't mean to make back up sound so bad. I, like many others, like to have more options available. As noted, I use a lot of ISO files. So I have absolutely nothing against their use. In fact, DVD Shrink has made it a lot easier to use them than some retail software. The retail items have to use an emulator to load the ISO file for use. So another feather in the hat of Shrink.
Seems Mr Nero or a rep of his dropped some data to AD. Anyone wanting Nero can use it. The trial can be downloaded every month. It's a pain to keep reloading, so many give up and buy. They say the way they do it doesn't hurt sales. So fans, jump right in there and enjoy.
I believe I need to clarify some issues, as some statements made here are true, but only in certain cases.
First, there is only one Nero 6 Suite. On our website, we have the Nero 6 Suite broken down into four components. The reason is that if we combined it all in one, we would have a very large download. And most of our customers only want to download portions of the Nero 6 Suite. So we have it broken down in the following fashion.
Under UPDATES:
Package 1: This contains our Nero Burning ROM/Nero Express build. This also includes Nero BackItUp, Nero Cover Designer, Nero WAV editor, Nero SoundTrax, Nero ToolKit, Nero Image Drive.
In a nutshell, Package 1 is all you'll need for basic CD and DVD Creation. Be it for Audio, Data, or basic VCD and SVCD Creation, or copying of data/audio CD's.
Package 2: This contains our NeroVision Express 2, Nero Recode, and Nero Showtime.
In a Nutshell, all your DVD Authoring tools needed for creation and playback.
Package 3: This contains only InCD 4. You PacketWriting software to treat your ReWritable media like a floppy.
Package 4: This contains our NeroMix software. This is like your Windows Media Player 9 program.
Important Note: Under Trial Versoins, Package 3 is NeroMix, and Package 4 is our NeroPhotoShow Express, which is our new Photo ManageMent software. Expect the Updates page to change soon to add the Nero PhotoShow Express for download as well in the coming days.
On another Note, our DEMO software is a complete and fully functional download. That means it DOES come with a full working Nero Recode 2. Our Demo's only work for the month they are released, not 30 days from the time of install. So it's possible that you download the Demo 4 days before the month ends, and you only get 4 days before the Demo expires. However, we do come out with a new Demo each month, so you need only uninstall the old Demo and install the New to obtain the full 30 days trial for the new month.
And yes, this could mean that you never have to purchase our software. But to date, this has not harmed our sales any. Far from it, from our viewpoint it helps our sales. :-)
As for OEM bundles not including Nero Recode 2, this True and False, depending on the OEM. The OEM has full control over what they wish to include in their OEM bundle. Some want the Nero Recode 2, and others do not. So if you purchase a bundled Recorder with our software, be sure to check with the OEM first to see what exactly they offer Nero OEM bundle.

I'm new at this too. I started backing up my dvd's w/ dvdxcopy xpress since it came w/ my dvdrw, but I've been playing around w/ DVD Shrink to keep the menu's and extra's. I thought you had to rip w/ dvd decryptor to get around the copy right protection. Are you saying that shrink will do this and no need to rip w/ decryptor first? Thanks in advance for any info.

This may be off the subject a little, but I have shrink and 321 xpress. If I don't care about the menu's and extra's, which one do most people prefer in regards to quality of backup and time required to make the backup? I use only ritek g04 media.

I know it has been a function to use ISO for burn. I was talking about the provision for the split ISO files being incorporated. I thought that was a new aspect. I don't have a FAT32 that will record, so dealing with that part is out for me.

Sorry brobear, the "now" in "I really like that viewer in the Re Author. Now everyone can click on the file and view what they're going to edit..." made me think you were refering to this feature as one of the new ones.
Splitting ISOs for FAT32 users is indeed a new feature, and being beta-tested as we speak.

Guess I need to edit my ramblings. I let things run onto the page and sometimes miss the connections.
I'll reiterate:
Some of the functions of DVDShrink make it a rival of some of the better retail items. Among those is the nice option of being able to use a viewer to scan video and audio tracks in editing, much like the same software in 321 Platinum. It is a shame it entailed too much work to incorporate functional menus in the Re Author section or it would be more competitive with Recode2. Shrink could some sliders on the compression controls to.
ddlooping you need to tell the members about some of the new features. I have already been asked about the split ISO process for FAT32 and burning with Decryptor. And the new Quality Settings are an asset that a lot of people have not heard about. You need to address the new info in one spot if you haven't already.
Separated enough for you? The other post was more enthusiastic if a trifle jumbled. Don't want enthusiasm... its gone.

Guess we need to get around to your question. Xpress is the faster usually. You have 2 choices with it, Full Disc and Movie Only. Movie Only is the best choice for quality and speed. Video quality will probably be close, so not a real factor. The version of Shrink coming out should be superior. So when the 3.2 comes out, it will be a good addition to your software collection. No speed improvements. It will be better for the big movies than the Xpress. So, you get into which is best for a particular aspect of the job.
