Next, I would like you to start monitoring the encode and burn process.

Do Ctrl-Alt-Del once and chose Task Manager - Performance. This will show you how CPU and RAM/virtual memory resources are used. Have this app launched BEFORE you begin encoding.

Also, next to Performance is Processes. Check this for programs running in the background. Try to turn off what you don't need with Start >> Run >> msconfig. If the msconfig is confusing, let me know.

I saw on your other thread that you use RecordNow to burn. This sw works great for some, but I never could get the version that came with my Sony 530A to work. I had Nero anyway, so that's what I use now.

Nero has a "perpetual" trial version ... being that it expires at the end of every month, and you then have to reinstall it. I don't think that this is a full-featured version, but it has the burner you need. Nero also has a very nice package with this Ultra 6 including a very nice encoder called Recode 2. Another module also lets you design DVD covers, do home video, etc.

I would suggest you uninstall RecordNow, and try the Nero trial.
http://www.ahead.de/us/nero6-ultraedition.php

Once it is installed, it will have its own InfoTools on the menu. Check to see that Nero's ASPI is installed properly. If you like Nero, you can get it here for $49 USD.
https://eaglenics.com/index2.htm

Also, did you ever have Adaptec-Roxio installed? If so, we need to remove the remnants. They can cause problems with RecordNow and Nero.

Please confirm that you do have a Sony DRU 500A drive. Here is a firmware upgrade link: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru500adwn.htm
You will also find a WinXP fix, an ASPI fix, and a drive diagnostic. Check into these to see if you need them.

It is also advisable to have your DVD-ROM as Master, and your burner as the Slave. It does not affect anything you have been experiencing, though. It's a performance issue for some routines, and when you have a chance, you might want to change it.

I used DVD Shrink and put it on my hard drive, no problems. I used my Veritas RecordNow DX ver 4.60 and burned it to a DVD+RW, no problem. I thought everything was great so I tried burning to DVD+R, BIG problems. I just went through five (5) disks. I keep getting the same error:
"Data job terminated with errors. Error-10 at sector 368-Disc Read error-command:2A sense:03 ASC:73 ASCQ:03".
I have already used 20 of these disks from the pack of 50 with no problems. What are the chances of five in a row not working?

This is a very common experience. I have been thru it myself, and it defies logic...until you get to the bottom of how it all works. I can't go there right now, but you are being told you have a media problem by the burner/burner software.

Nero might act differently. The firmware upgrade may help. In the long run, you will have to switch to RITEK G04 if you want consistant results.

I am out for the evening (8:30 PM PNW time). Post your progress, and I will be back tomorrow.

First of all, I would like to thank you "Doc409" for all of your suggestions, help and patients.
I just finished downloading Nero. I am going to uninstall RecordNow and give Nero a try. I updated my burner firmware last week from the same link you sent. As soon as I hit his reply button, I'm going to MeritLine.com and ordering some Ritek. After I install Nero, I'm going to try to burn again (probably not till morning). I'll post the results.

Everything seems to be working fine. I even burned onto three of the disks that Veritas said were bad.

Fantastic!!! I'll bet that is a load off... ...I'm glad that your back to burning. Thanks for passing on the bit about Veritas.

Concerning the media now being OK, you can now see how another sw program, and with its ASPI layer, can tell your drive to "see" the media. Nero is the best I know of. Even though Nero now sees it, there could be problems with reading the burn when low quality media is used - like CMC Magnetics. Some media will even degrade over a year's time. The best bet is to stay with Ritek.

To answer another question you had. If you want to back up a DVD that is less than about 4460 MB's, you can run it through Decrypter (I suggest File mode), and then transfer those files directly into Nero to burn. If the file is too large, Nero will tell you so.

Thanks for staying the course here. Your feedback to my questions was also excellant, and it helped to speed the process. Best of luck and Happy Burning!!!
_____________
Edit: PS: I forgot to mention. When you are encoding files that are already ripped to a hard drive, they process faster going from one drive to another. So, you might want to look into a larger C drive, as 20 Gig is minimal. Also, there are tremendous performance increases between a 5600 RPM 2MB buffer and a 7200 RPM 8 MB buffer hard drive. When I made this switch to my C drive, my impression was that things went twice as fast.

Hello everyone. This is my first post and I was hoping one of you good people out there in The Internet Land could explain something to me.

I have a new XP computer that is super duper fast and has a super duper hard drive. I am an exeprienced DVD SHRINK user and since I got this new computer, it has not allowed me to encrypt dvds to my hard drive. When I back up a disc, I get an error that says:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Copy protection error. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

This is driving me nuts because this has never happened to me before on my old computer. I have tried this with 4 different DVDs. Is there a different version for XP users? Is this a common problem? Thank you for your time.

No, not an XP problem.

Two things come to mind. First, download v3.2 again, and re-install it. See what happens. Second, download DVD Decrypter, and see if it will unlock the copy protection.

Also, will you drive actually play a DVD on your player?

Also, what burner software are you using? Do you have Nero InfoTools? If not, dl it, and we can discuss what to do next.

I am glad it is not an XP problem. I will download v3.2 again and let you know what happens and DVD Decrypter.

My two drives do play DVDs and one is even a DVD burner.

My burner software is HP Record Now. It is very easy to use to make a data disc. I don't use Nero. I never really liked it.

UPDATE: DVD Decrypter is working as I type this.

It sound's like you didn't get a good Shrink install. The other thing is that the pre-v3.2 Shrink had problems with some copy protection. The fact that you have this copy protection error with all the DVD's leads me to think it is a bad install.

Also, you can load decrypter files into shrink to complete the transcoding process.
