Hi all. I've been using the "old" Shrink (3.1) with great success through hundreds of rips/encodes/burns. I've been reading some good things about the "new" version (3.2 I guess?) but am wondering if it's worth downloading that one if the old one is still working great? I'm a bit paranoid about fixing things that aren't broken. So anyone who has experience with the new version, please let me know what its changes are, how they're working out, if the quality of the shrunk version is better, etc. Thanks in advance.

Veblin, thanks for the link. Lots of good info. One quick question -- what does "adaptive error compensation" mean?

Thanks, Brian100. I think I'll do the download this weekend & see how it works.

From what I've heard, the quality is meant to rival IC8. If that is true I will use it extensively. I intend to put it through it's paces at the weekend.

I've read some reports that claims it even surpasses IC8, some of the new quality settings however has it transcoding at a much slower rate at about the same speed as CCE. The new sharpness feature is apparently great on films of 20% or less but as the file size increases its better to go for the softer selection. I'll still use it to rip and compress menus with but I think CCE is my first and last choice over all now.

Sophocles
If shrink surpasses IC8, it will be one be one hell of an improvement. DDlooping mentioned a while ago that it should be faster than IC8. I look forward to testing it.
Slightly off topic here. I think there is room on this forum for a dedicated Shrink area now. With the new release, expect a lot of "newbie" style questions to pop up.
I know what you mean about CCE. It really is unbeatable. I intend to purchase a new PC soon, so I may bend your ear on some suggested specs and/or requirments.

@brian100: I completely agree about there being room for a DVD Shrink forum. Shrink has become a sort of Swiss Army DVD Tool over the last few months and people use it for many different things. I'm like Sophocles in that I don't compress movies with it, just menus, but on the other hand, before I even rip a DVD-9 I use it to find out a lot of information about the disc, like what the size of the movie is and if it has multiple angles or seamless branching. With the Still Images compression in 3.2 I've even started using it as a sort of pre-procesing tool for DVD Remake. I change all the items I plan to remove in DVD Shrink, and then all I have to do is look through all the items in DRM and hide them. I find that I can identify what a given title actually is much easier in Shrink because the preview has sound.

I have to confess that I've used DVD Shrink for sometime as a diagnostic tool, especially for determining audio track and other file sizes. I didn't start using it to shrink menus until Vurbal made that suggestion, which was immediately followed by a little bell and a small light bulb going off in my head.
The new Shirnk has some unique quality settings that just might make it the first choice in 1 click transcoders. I'm still testing it and comparing it to some of the feature included on the other betas that preceded it.

Agreed, totally. I always use shrink as a "preview/learning" aid on every DVD I process. I would now be completely lost without it.
