This question has been answered many time throughout these forums.

Stuttering or freezing on playback in standalones is generally due to the use of poor quality media or the use of labels on the recorded media.

What brand of media are you using??

I am sorry to ask the same question as before. If anyone can post me the URL for this topic I would be very grateful.

Laser and Princo are also cheap, crap media. Get some ritek g04.

Pioneer 107, ritek g05

As already stated, this is a CLASSIC poor media symptom.
I would also consider checking your "apparent" good burns for read errors. (use DVDinfo pro it's free). You may be surprised at what you find lurking.

You might want to find out what type of media your dvdrw manufacturer recomends for your burner. Then go to meritline.com and see what brand media is recommended for your brand/model (probably ritek g04 or beall). Make sure you have the latest f/w patch. Its also a good idea to defrag and remove any spyware prior to any rip/burns. Hope this helps been there done that.

Thanks to all who replied.
I have just bought some Ritek (unbranded) blanks and I will try it and see.
BTW, is the unbranded Ritek any different to the G04s?
I asked at the shop and he siad that it is no different.
I also have the following DVD writer and wonder if that is a problem.
Liteon 812S
Liteon 166S DVD ROM
P4 2.8 HT 800FSB
1G RAM
120G HDD

Is my DVD burner particularly bad for making backup DVD movies?
I noticed that it is locked to region 4 when I had a look at its region coding. Does that matter?
I noticed when I tried to intall DVD dycrypt that I got an error message (which I can not recall now!)

Sorry for all these questions.

Ok I am going to answer one of my own questions butI still appreciate help on the others.
I just got DVD info pro and used it to look at the blanks unbranded DVDs that I bought and yes the manufactor code is G04 from Ritek.

I am going to do some test burns to see how I go...

Thankx,

Hi behrad. I have a LiteOn LDW851S and I was also having a stuttering problem.

My recordings played OK via the PC, but not via my DVD player.

After blaming DVD Shrink, the media, the DVD player et al I discovered an update to the LDW851S firmware and now, fingers crossed, it looks as though the stutter has gone - despite using the same media, player etc.

behrad,

Sometimes if you are trying to compress to much your stand alone dvd player will not like it and cause the freezing and shuttering you are experiencing. Try copying only the movie, no menu's or extra's and see what that does. I have a Lite-On LDW-451S that I have updated to a SOHW-832S with firmware patch VSOA (which actually makes it a dual layer burner and increases the burn speed from 4x to 8x on some media's) that I got off of the cd freaks forum. They have a forum there especially for owners of Lite-On drives. Lots of good info for us Lite-On folk. I don't know what f/w patch is recommended for your drive but I know they have some. It's worth checking into. Also make sure your ASPI drivers are all up to date. You can get the updates for your os on the adaptec web page. Hope this helps.

Again thanks to all of you.

More of an update on this front:
I have now been able to burn DVDs just by using the Ritek media and 99% of stuttering has disappeared.
I have not been game enough to try the patches and firmware upgrade as suggested as the warnings that it may kill my drive has scared me off and I am sticking to the principle of not tampering with something if is still ok. I can live with a 99% succes rate.

Thanks to all of you.
Cheers,
B

Hey there,

I had some problem with DVD-R 4x E3works and even with Ridata DVD-R 4x when burned at 4x.

As a test, I used Nero and burned those 2 medias at 2x and all my skipping problems went away.

I always used the same movie, so I know where to go to test the skipping etc..
It always skipped at the same place, if burned at 4x.

My 2 cents worth.

I'm useing ritek dvd+r (media code ricohjpnr01 02) and although these are coded at 4x I'm burning them at 8x with no freezing, tileing, or pixelateing. The kprobe and Nero scans look good too.
