Hello, I have DVDXCOPY Gold, and used it for many months with my Pioneer 4x drive with no problem. Yesterday, I purchased a Digital Research 16x machine (ddvd16dl) and the error keeps coming up when I try to make a back up that says "Error reading source disc." It happens on every one...is there a place I need to make changes to the program? It starts to read the disc and within 1-10 seconds, this error comes up. I am not very technical and cannot find a way to make this work. Please help!!

To be honest i have never had a drive that supported DVDXCOPY or it is the way my system is set up.I do have a copy of this software which i purchased and have tried to use with little sucsess. My mate bangs on about how good it is so i would use your old drive with this software and use new drive with something compatible.

Go to the Windows start button>all programs>dvdXcopy Gold> Drive select.
If you select drive select and nothing happens, it sees your other drive as the master. Which should be your DVD, but it probably isnt.
So you have 2 choices. Change your master/slave config or go to device manager and disable the drive that you dont want Xcopy to use and run drive select again. After your dvd burner is recognized, you may re-enable the the drive.

Thank you all for responding. I am not a big fan of 321 either, but I know of no other program that will let me make a back-up of my movie dvd's, does anyone know any way to do this other than dvdXcopy (the version I have is the one taken off the market).

DVD Shrink and Nero is a good combination or any other ripper and Nero.

Hi there mntwister, Welcome to our little Club -

Here's a couple of proggy's that will do it foir free :D)

Follow these steps,

First create a folder for your HD backup. Try to put it someplace where you won?t forget it (i.e. C:/All DVD Work/My movie Name).

Next download DVD Decrypter and under mode select ?ISO, Write?. Un-tick the box that says ?verify?. Where it says ?source?, you?ll leave that blank as DVD Decrypter will find the location of your backed up DVD file automatically. Lastly, where it says ?Destination?, select the drive where your burner resides. Feel free to close DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink will open it when it needs it.

The link for the newest DVD Decrypter -
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_decrypter.cfm

Download DVD Shrink. Open it and click ?Edit?, then click ?Preferences? on this page we?re going to select ?DVD Target Size? as custom and set the size as 4360MB - we do this to make extremely sure that our disc isn?t too large. Then under the ?File I/O? tab un-tick ?Enable burning with Nero? then click ?OK?.

The link for the newest DVD Shrink -
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm

Place your original DVD in your DVD-ROM drive and a DVD blank in your burner?s drive. (Of course if you only have a single drive, place your original in the drive and when you are asked for it, put your blank DVD in. Then, first chance you get buy yourself a DVD-ROM to ease the strain on your buirner.) DO USE Ritek G04, Verbatim or media boasting ?Advanced AZO Dye. All other media could very well cause errors, only the very best media should be used for DVD Video backups. Now is defiantly not the time to put your crappy cheap stuff in - )

Now click "Backup" -

Now, take just a second and under ?Target Device? go to ?Select target device? once there, select ?ISO Disc Image?. NEXT, IMPORTANT, tick ?Launch DVD Decrypter to burn the output image? box. Finally, where it says ?Select target image file?, browse till you find your created folder for your backup and click ?Save?. That?s it ! Click ?OK? and DVD Shrink burns that ISO image to your HD. It then opens DVD Decrypter and has it burn the ISO image to your waiting blank DVD.
Don?t use your PC for anything at all while it?s working. -

I'M NOT KIDDING ! STAND BACK FROM THE COMPUTER !

* There have been issues where playing your DVD on your burner may result in errors during processing :-(

When you're tired of that try these programs -

1. DVDShrink (ver. 3.2) ISO mode + DVD Decrypter ISO write mode (FREE)

2. DVD Shrink (ver 3.2) + Nero (ver 6. OR ver 5.5)

3. DVD Shrink (ver 3.2) + CopyToDVD

4. AnyDVD or DVD43 + DVD2One + CopyToDVD

5. AnyDVD or DVD43 + CloneDVD2 (elby)

6. AnyDVD or DVD43 + Nero Recode 2

7. For DVD-5's (FREE)
DVD Decrypter in the ISO read mode + DVD Decrypter in the ISO write mode

8. For DVD-5's
AnyDVD or DVD43 + Nero Express (copy Disc to Disc)

9.. DVD Decrypter (File Mode) and DVD Copy 2 (InterVideo) - (Fast)

10. AnyDVD and CloneDVD (.net not elby) (little or no compression, it's a poor proggy)

Cheers,

Pete

John179,

I worked for 321 and I too was smitten by the 321studios "now_you_can" revolution, but my eyes have been opened and now I'm just like most of you, a 321sucker, LOL

Have you verified your new drive to be the "master" drive? I had the same problem when I added a new drive but I installed it to be the "slave" I swapped it and it works fine now. Maybe try it? Thanks, Rob

Even though iam not a lover of the 321 software i was sad to see the annoucement it will no longer carry on produceing software. Some innocent people have lost there jobs here and that is sad.I hope all these people who were hell bent on kicking out realise this instead of gloating.

I agree with you John. People have lost their jobs over this, and it's sad when a new company has to have this happen to them.

The movie studios in the early days of VHS tape were terrified by the thought of these machines, so much that they sued Sony and tried to shut down production on Betamax and all vcr's. Turns out that today, the studios make more money from home video than from theatrical films. But people have the right, under law, to make a back-up, and it's really a sad event in the history of America when those rights start to be taken away from us. You can't use a DVHS machine either for taping HD programming from cable, they have succeeded in blocking that too. Why do the studios think that any form of back-up is like we're going to start selling hundreds of them on Ebay or somewhere else? All I want is to watch a movie when I want too, and be sure that if my disc breaks or scratches too much, that I have a back-up and don't have to spend another $20 for the same film.

For consumers, who put billions of dollars into the pockets of the studios, it seems all they do is try to slap us in the face. Pretty stong post, I know, but it's pretty sad too. Be nice if the public boycotted going to the moves until they respected our rights!

That may be the case for you, but you can bet that the bulk of the blanks and burners being sold are being used to copy DVD's people do not own. Most Flea Markets will have a few 'vendors' selling hundreds of illegal dupes. Do you think all of NetFlix's customers just watch their selections?

We are all aware of this but you don't close a bank just because someone takes money out of it ilegally. In all walks of life where there is a genral rule someone will always bend it.The way you seem to be putting it just because someone does something ilegal the rest should suffer.Do you think when sony made there dvd writers they did not look at the effect it would have on there other ventures.Even with all these dodgey little boot leggers on flea markets it does not affect there profit enough to say hey lets stop making these things as you can do ilegal things with them.No they just carried on and made a absolute fortune. If these companys really wanted to kick out these types of guys out they have the money to do so.They could drop the prices to a price where people would say hey i would rather pay the extra for quality. Its like when you purchase a peace of software and the latest version comes out obviously you want it.So you go and buy it and then realise you have been had a bit as it is not much differant. You have just been had by the makersIts called business and how much money they can screw out of the consumer.Yes so next time you purchase a writer you are putting money in to there business so they do not care.I know as i get had regular just like yourself and millions of others.

Unfortunately that is exactly the case. And suffer we do... and will, till the end of time.

On a side note how can we legally make/have a backup when it's illegal to circumvent any copy protection?

I will add that the same thing is happening in more areas now. I get 12 glorious channels of High Definition tv, and a few days ago purchased a Mitsubishi DVHS machine so I could tape some movies for my own home watching, and found out there is a new chip inside that STOPS TAPING OF HDTV CONTENT FROM CABLE. There you go. Another infringment on our rights. Because someone down the block may put it on Ebay, I can't tape for myself, which I have the right too. It's getting to be where the laws are made by the corporations who have the money to lobby and do the favors for the senators, ect. Did anyone see the distinguished Gentleman with Eddie Murphey? This is exactly what the film is all about, if you havn't seen it it's very funny, but also makes you realize just what happens.
