Hey,

I am wondering if using the computer while shrinking a dvd will affect the outcome???

I have:

P4 2.8 1m cache/800fsb
512 mb ram (3200/400)
lg gsa 4120b
samsung cdrw/dvd sm332b

I do a lot of backing up and would like to use the comp while shrinking. I also want to have the best quality that I can!!!

Anyone out there who can advise from experience?

Thanks...

Hi,

You can get away with light tasks such browsing the internet and so forth while compressing but when it comes time to burn it's best to leave your PC alone to do its thing :)

I figured that would be the case.

I don't normally do anything while it's ripping and I never touch during the burning process...

Thanks again.

I will venture forth and try it!

My experience is the otherway around ! I ran a tiny program called "TinyResMeter" to monitor the %CPU usage ( this freeware is D/L from :http://perso.accelance.net/~pesoft/trm/us_trm.html)

During the compression , CPU usage is 100% and during DVD burning it is about 15 % . So surf the net during burning and let the PC alone during compression.

I must be seeing things. I don't think that is a very good answer.

Compression is very CPU intensive but doing something minor like web surfing during compression will in most cases just slow the process somewhat.

Burning is not CPU intensive but is very data transfer intensive. You can easily cause buffering problems doing most anything else on the computer during burning. This causes a buffer under-run. Now most burners do have Burn Proof which will stop the burning process until the buffer can fill back up but,
Burn Proof is not Fool Proof.

The best that can be said about Burn Proof is that will stop the burn and wait for the buffer to fill and then start burning again. That does not mean that there will not be problems playing that disc. Burning a disc is best done when Burn Proof never has to kick in and one way to make that less likely is to not use your computer for other things while burning.

Veblin...

Thank you and I agree with you 100%. I NEVER use the computer while burning a dvd. Although the price has dropped considerably for the media, I stll don't like to throw money away!

Thanks for all th input. I did solve the problem by just dedicating one machine to the process. I have two machines hooked up to a KVM switch, so I can toggle between both.

All is well!

I based my conclusion on actual experience with burning over 200 DVDs and surfing the net while waiting for the burning job to finish. I have not wasted a disk yet ! It's hard to argue against fact , though. ( Burner: Sony DRU 510A , Win XP Pro , 512 MB Ram and Celeron 2.4 Ghz ).

Hi,

It's not that anyone doubts your results zooco, it's just that not everyone will share the same success :)
