Well if your Source file is interlaced then when you have to encode it as interlaced....
If you Load your File into TMPGEnc useing the "WiZard" it will analize your Files to see if it is interlaced or Progressive and if it is interlaced it will adjust the settings automaticly so that the File will be encoded as interlaced....
The only way to make a interlaced file Progressive is to encode it as Progressive and/Or de-interlace the file useing a de-interlace filter.....

Thanx for answering so quickly.
I have tried with every possible setting in TMPEnc and still have Progressive output.
So i'm looking for some tutorial about outputtin interlaced mpeg2 either in CCE or Mainconcept or Procoder.
Second question: if i capture Huffyuv AVI with a regular TVtuner (Acorp Conexant BT878) at a rate of 30GB/hour, is that the same quality as Canopus ADVC100 captures?

Are you sure that it is Outputting as Progressive because when useing TMPGEnc the only way to make the Encoded file Progressive is to Deinterlace...I guess one way to find out is to take the Encoded Mpeg file and Load it into TMPGEnc useing the Wizard and if the Box pops up saying "Judging Field order" then it is interlaced and if it sets the "Video type" to "Non-Interlace" then it is Progressive.....
As to your Question about captureing to AVI useing Huffyuv useing your BT878A Chipset compared to the Canopus ADVC-100 the answer is No the Quality isn"t the same because the BT878A Chipset is only an 8 bit decoder were the ADVC-100 uses i think a 24bit decoder so the quality is Much higher.....Cheers

Well, after reading posts and trying software for two weeks, my brain really hurts. Only a couple of questions remain, for the moment:

1. Everyone, especially Minion, seems to trash Roxio, but I haven't seen any detailed reasons why. I'm using an OEM version 6 and haven't had any real problems with it, but then it also won't do everything I want. Why is it so bad??

2. Opinions on Ulead VideoStudio? (Says its "dual CPU aware", which fits my hardware.) Also affordable if I buy ver. 5 on eBay then the upgrade to ver. 8.

That's about it for now. Thanks for a lot of good info.

Minion I have heard you talk about getting the correct bit rate as opposed to using programs like DVD Shrink. I am trying to create a multiple episode DVD with my own menus, etc. Could you explain this to me a little more? or direct me to place where I can learn more about this.

mbanx: I think you are takeing what I said a Little out of context...I believe I was replying to someone who was Captureing his Movie files with his Capture device directly to Mpeg2 but his captures were to big to fit on a Single DVD so he was useing DVD Shrink to compress the captured file and I told him he should have captured the File useing the Correct bitrate in the First place instead of useing DVD Shrink to re-compress the captured file, which does not really apply with what you are trying to do....
I believe DVD Shrink has support for Backing up DVD"s that have Multiple episodes on it, Or are you doing something else??

NonTroppo: Roxio is OK for burning disks but it sucks when it is used to encode files to VCD/SVCD ECT because it has a Low quality encoder, I also had problems with it deleteing my DVD/CD drives from my system after un-installing it , I have allways found it a Little too buggy for my taste....
"Is Ulead Video studio 7" any good??? well that would depend on what you want to do with it..!!

Minion, thanks. All I was doing with Roxio was adding a menu and burning to DVD. Worked just fine, but took a long time to render (suspect that's normal for anything).

Primary goal: old VHS => DVD, mainly a couple of out of print operas that are not likely to be released on DVD.

Problem so far: Mpeg2 files captured with ATI too big for single DVD. I got PowerBit and am planing on re-capturing, but I have a question there. PowerBit asks for "Audo Tracks" and their sampling rate. How do I determine what to put in there (has a major impact on bitrate)?

As far as Ulead is concerned, I'm really not sure what I want it for. I think I've looked at too many demo programs :). I was thinking I MUST have one central Suite to do stuff in. Since you ask the question, I'm not so sure. About the only think I think I would like to do is is improve the quality of captured DVD, but I suspect I'm thousands of $ in professional equipment and software away from being able to do that.

Thanks,
Randy

The audio Part in the "PowerBit" program is for calculateing the audio bitrate...In your Capture software in the capture Profile you are useing there are Probably audio settings were you can select the audio bitrate...You set the Audio to "1" for one audio track and then to put in the bitrate you are going to use to capture the audio which you can also set in the capture software...The audio is generally captured at between 128kbs and 384kbs so set that to whatever your capture software is captureing the audio too...If you don"t know then to be safe set it to 384kbs...It doesn"t have a Huge impact on the File size but if your File is even a Little to big it won"t fit on a DVD and you will have to re-capture your Movie....Cheers

REgarding Roxio:

I bought it a couple of years ago. The specs and advertising were misleading for a "newbie". After I got it and discovered that it did not support many of the "options" in the MPEG2 spec, making capture with certain hardware worthless, and importing files created by MPEG2 1394 DV Cams (my Panasonic, for example) impossible. I contacted their support and was basically blown-off. I guess they were focusing on the inexpensive hardware, like Hollywood. Mid-range stuff just wasn't supported.

Time, and income, changes many things, and they are still in business. I hope therir MPEG2 codec has improved and they now support the optional modes. But I'd listen to Minion, if I were buying something new.

According to me, C: is always the drive, where the OS is located on... and yes, you can do this the same way, only this happens next time, when you boot up XP the next time, but you can cancel this within 10 seconds, if you like, and your pc boots twice, during this process. you also get a warning, that you can't restore to FAT32 again...
Also, when you have a multi-boot config, with the older OS's that use FAT32, you cannot use them anymore.

Bedankt, Thanks,

Fugitive.

Hello, agian. OK, as I progress here, I may have come up with an answer to the "What do I want to do with Ulead?" question.
1. I would like to extract some scenes from a captrured movie (5-6 minutes out of the middle).
2. I also may want to extract the audio from the same and save as a seperate file.
3. Way down on the list, I may at a future date want to upload to a web site for streaming.

Will Ulead do these? Any freeware that does? Your reccomendations?

Thanks, as usual,
Randy

Well you can use Freeware for doing that if you are Captureing to an AVI format...Virtual-Dub can cuz out parts of a AVI file and extract the audio from an AVI file, if you are working with Mpeg files then you can use the "Mpeg tools" in TMPGEnc to do simple editing and demuxing of Audio streams from video files....Cheers

I have a problem maybe someone can help me with. I have a memorex DVD burner and the Roxio DVD builder (which everybody says is junk but I like the ease of the editing).I have the Data video DAC-100 http://www.datavideo-tek.com The media I have used is Verbatim is has worked wonderful at backing up DVD's. I wanted to put some vhs on to DVD for the tapes go bad and I have some motocross racing of me that I would like to add music to that the DVD builder allows you to do. When I first started experimenting at this I took a 2 min clip of a bike doing a burnout. I took and used the Roxio DVD builder and transfered it from VHS to HD using my DAC-100. I took and clicked on the burn DVD it encoded the clip and burned it. I took the DVD played it in the living room and it played boy was I excited. I then wanted to take a 54 min concert and transfer to DVD from vhs I did the same process as above I then insterted chapters into the concert then I clicked to burn it encoded and then burned the DVD. I took it to the living room nothing it showed the disc to have three titles but would not play. Tried it in my other DVD players same thing. Note my backup DVD's play fine on these DVD players. I tried it three more times on different DVD's I even tried on a RW it did'nt work so I erased then backed up a movie and it played fine on the same DVD+RW that I had first put VHS footage on. They play in my computer as soon as I load the disc Windows automatically plays it. What I don't understand is why did it work the first time with the burnout clip and now it will not at all. I have even redone the capture from VHS still no cigar. I love doing this kind of work on the computer and I really don't have the money right now to pop out for more software. If it worked once should it not work again? I will show you what DVD info shows about the disc maybe that might help out. If there is any more info that you need about what equipment im using or the process please let me know and I will fill you in. Thanks again for your patients for us new guys. This is the burnout clip that I redone again that will not play for the second time (note the first time it played I erased it to put the concert on it failed so I rerecorded the burnout clip seeing that it woked before now it will not play either. Why it doesn"t work is up in the air ,It could be a Bad disk or it just further Prooves that Roxio sucks...
If you want to do it properly you don"t really have to get anymore software or at least pay for it....
Just Use the Software that came with your DAC-100 to capture the Movie files to your Hard drive and then download "Tmpgenc" and use it to encode the captured files to Mpeg2/DVD and then author the encoded files to DVD useing something like "Tmpgenc DVD author" or "DVD-Lab" all of which have a 30 day demo available for download....
You will Notice useing a Real Mpeg encoder that you will achieve MUCH better Quality at a Lower bitrate that you would useing the Crappy assed encoder built into roxio there for getting more Video on each DVD at a Higher Quality......

Yeah, sad to say, i must also agree with Minion,
so it will cost you some extra bucks, for extra software,
a lot of people use TMPGEnc Plus, DVD Author, or DVDLab,
also with eaz, and have no problems with the things you want, (and more) check out some "guides" on this site,
or www.videohelp.com.

maybe check first for "dvd buider" guides, if there are any.

WOW. This is the most informative thread/website I have found. It's going to me very helpful when I get this project going.

I have about 8 vhs movies I want to get to DVD. This thread has been great about software but I haven't seen much in the way of affordable (read cheap) capture devices. The Belkin USB capture device I am now using doesn't seem to be up to the task.

So, what is the best/cheapest capture device I can get for rca(composite) video and audio to get the movies off the camcorder and into the computer ? I only need it for the 8 or so tapes I have.

Thanks in advance for any help.

For a Cheap Capture solution that will still capture fairly good quality I would suggest getting a PCI TV Card, One with a 10 bit decoder chip like the Asus TV Card or one of many others with a 10 Bit decoder Like one of these:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=674681&Sku=O38-1034&CatId=1427

OR

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=763441&Sku=O38-1046&CatId=1425

Or one of Many others ...These cards are pretty Cheap and produce fairly good quality.....Cheers

PS: If you are wanting a chap solution then don"t go USB as there are a Lot of Problems with Cheap USB capture devices....

Minion can I use Roxio to capture the files so I can edit the chapters and commercials ect.... Then use the TMPGEnc to encode would you recommend TMPGEnc DVD author or would you go with DVD lab. I did not actually get software with my DAC-100 is there suppose to be some that comes with it. Thanks so much for your help.

iracekx: With your Capture device you should be captureing to DV AVI because that is the format that your Device compresses the video signal to....
So if Roxio Captures the video to DV AVI and edits in DV AVI format then you can use it But I do not think it does...I think it Probably re-Compresses the Signal to Mpeg....
Your device is Meant to be used with Editing Packeges like Adobe premier or Vegas video or AviD extress DV which can Capture from your Device in it"s Native DV AVI format and can also edit in that format and Most can even Encode the project to Mpeg2 for DVD....
Since you probably do not have a Proper capture and editing program that will capture from your device in it"s Native DV AVI format and edit in that format I suggest you use a DV AVI caoture program Like "Win DV" or "Scenealizer" or this one called DVio which is freeware should also work for captureing from your Device and it can be downloaded here:

http://www.carr-engineering.com/DVIO.exe

After you have used the program to Capture the DV AVI file to your Hard drive you Can use "Tmpgenc" to encode the AVI file to Mpeg2 For DVD and then any Editing can be done in "Tmpgenc DVD author" after encodeing to Mpeg2 while you are Authoring the DVD...
But if you are doing a Lot of Editing then i would suggest you get a Real DV AVI Editing program....

Both TMPGEnc DVD author and DVD-Lab are "Fully" working Demo versions for 30 days so you can use them like they were the retail versions for the first 30 days.....Cheers

I've got a different problem that hopefully someone has the answer to. I've been converting VHS to DVD and have done over 100 so far. However some tapes seem to have a distortion at the top of the screen like a sync pull. These tapes will play fine through the same VCR to my TV, some of them have only been played 1 time. There are several posts concerning this on the ATI message board but no real answers. I have been told a variety of possible causes which have proved false. I have tried 4 different VCRs. My PC is an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Ver 2 Mobo, XP2600, 1 GIG DDR 3500, 120GIG Seagate HD, 120GIG Seagate just for Video work, ATI All-In-Wonder Video, (also tried a All-In-Wonder 9800 - same prob) Nvidia sound(onboard). Using MMC9, capturing with MMC or Ulead Movie Maker 3. I usually capture in MPEG2 then shrink and burn with DVDShrink. I have downloaded and installed a patch to prevent 'copy guard' interfearance. This past week I bought an Adaptec PCI capture card and software package thinking the problem was the All-In-Wonder, only to experience the same thing. So if any of you have conquered this please let me know.
