Having just brought a brand new pstwo (slimline - uk PAL) and trying the external tape/straw mod (swap disc 3.3) here is my feedback...

the taping of the two sensors is rather easy using tissuepaper and tape. The one on the hinge is a pain in the ass and I simply could not get it to press the microswitch using straw method. I gave up and took mods off and reset it to play an original game (hadn't even played on it prior to attempting mod.)

It is kn@ckered! Wont read or recognise ANY disc now!

Will be returning it to the shop tomorrow.

Whats the chances of it being a faulty unit or becoming faulty due to mods?

to play regular ps2 games that would otherwise still work on the ps2 unmodded would you still need to go through all that process (with the swap magic) or could you just put the game disk in regularly. I mainly interested in this to be able to play imports on it. (They never came to the US), but would like to know if it makes playing regular regions bound games a hassle to play with. I hope someone could sort've unterstand what I wrote. I sometimes think one thing and type/ write another.

hey if you screw up your pstwo i would just reverse the mod and bring it to walmart and say you bought it there and then get a new one they will return anything as long as you say you bought it there this is what i plan to do if my modding screws my pstwo over.

Completed Mods. Using swap magic dvd 2.0, which worked on my old ps2, but now I get blue screen (as I should) and game begins to load but never finishes? Anyone else having problems using version 2.0.

So is it safe to do the tape mod or was it just a conspiracy? I'm getting a v12 system but it's from ebay so I'm afraid I may not be able to take it back somewhere locally let me know whats been going on. thanx

The tape mod works fine and will not hurt anything.

Ya, the straw part is definetely the trickiest part, here's what I suggest.

Cut off your section of straw. Cut it length wise all the way through so you basically have a rectangle piece of plastic. Now bend it so what used to be the inside of the straw is now the outside, cut it length wise again, but don't go all the way through, only go to the middle. When you squeeze the end that isn't cut, the straw will look like a 'Y' shape.

Now put in the tissue and the disc brake stopper first, then turn on your system and put in a dvd or whatever.

Now try and put the straw (the uncut end first, so the two cut pieces are sticking out)inside the gap of the double hinge at the back left of the tray.

If you've done it properly, you'll hear the laser move into position, you may have to fiddle with it to get it right, but when its in right you will hear the laser move into place, and the disc will start spinning.

Its a bit of a bitch, but a good stop-gap measure until reviews can come out for all the new gadgets.

I received SM3.3 today. I just got it to work on the PSTwo after 20 minutes or so, by following official instructions alone. Most of the time is spent on the hinge.

Experience:

Disk brake: very easy, insert paper and done.

Front sensor hole: I substitued tissue with thin plastic string for added firmness. Stuff hole, tape over and done.

Hinge: difficult at first, tried about a dozen times before the disc would spin up. Main trick: the inserted part should be hard enough so that most (>1 inch) of the 1.5inch straw is inserted. Remember that the console treats the lid as open until the lid is less than an inch from closed.

Can't give long term feedback yet, but am keeping fingers crossed.

Hope that helps someone out there.

hey guys i recently broke my old ps2 only because the rybon connector for the reset/ eject button became too weak and finally gave up. I was just wondering if i would be able to find this kind of wiring in lets say maybe a computer hardware store by any chance?

Have got it all working now. Hinge was tricky but got there in the end. you just have to make sure it is rigid and get enough down the gap.

Seem to be having some problems with PSone original game(fifa99)....it sometimes crashes on 2 player

original Getaway Black Monday is fine

Backup (dvd burn) of Need for speed underground 2 crashes using swap magic (dvd)v2.0

Not sure if it will be okay with v3.3 or whether the fact that I'm using 1 psone joypad when playing 2player has anything to do with it?

Its on a v12 pstwo (uk slimline)

Okay after reading all 11 pages or so.

Lets rule out the suspects of the laser burnout.

1. Holding down sensors - Ruled out because if this is the case, then the lid being closed would cause this problem and I've been having mine down for days.

2. PC burned cd and dvds overheats the laser - Ruled out because I play my pc burned music cd-r's on it all the time.

So the only suspects left are:

1. Swap Magic discs
2. Faulty PSTwo's
3. The game data burned on discs

Thats the conclusion I've come to, and can't think of any more things that it could be...

Wow, this is a long thread. Hey, I just received a new slimline PS2 for christmas and I'm wondering about this technique. http://www.swapmagic3.com/
A couple of you said you got it to work? Does it actually work? It sounds too good to be true! I'm looking to play import games and I don't want to install a mod-chip.

yes it worked for me but you have to play around will the straw to get it to work but you have to keep it open and my mum closed it and the paper that was stoping the disc break got stuck inside so i opened it and used the tape its better now i can leave it closed

I just read this entire thread and it doesn't seem like anyone has had any experience with the flip top lid for the v12. I'm thinking about picking one of these: http://consolesource.com/ecomm/customer/product.php?productid=2123&cat=4&page=4

It is my understanding that with this lid mod, it wouldn't be necessary to do any other mods such as straws, tape, etc. Am I correct? Thanks.

DivXer, I think 2 or 3 must be it, cause you have the SM discs in there for such little time, that they would have to be heavy poison to do so much damage in so little time. I think the burned discs is probably bad media (scratched etc) or bad burning (at high speeds so the laser has trouble reading it). But I totally agree, it isn't covering sensors or just the fact that they are pc burned discs.

Leonz, ya if you get the fliptop, you don't have to do any other mods, the lid covers the sensors for you. If you get it, let us know how it works out for you.

why dont u guys find a ps2 that can handle burnt media (bought recently) and then get a DMS4 chip and stop trying to play burnt games without a mod chip. The reason there are "booby traps" is because ther pstwo recognises the disc ID's changing magically without the lid actually being opened which is ver shifty. ive only had my pstwo for 4 days but since then ive watched 5 movies that are purple bottom based media which should have burnt a dodgy lazer out i belive
im gonna get it modded on sunday

anyone who knows a way to run ps2 games off a network server please tell me!
