simpsim1,thanks for the advice, there's a hell of a lot of code in such a small program (40kb),i hope a few peeps are trying this, cos i'm stumped at the mo,i'm also working on the .vol file by joining it and trying different programs to open it but i don't think the file joiner i got really cuts the cheese, plus i dont think hex-editing the vol file will do much good(unless you're stephen hawkins!,lol),need a list of directories that are actually on the .vol1 so that i know whats on it,if i knew it was just movies it would be much easier as they are quite distinctive in codes, just watched the entire star wars series while trying to do this(just finishing VI,bloody ewoks),i still aint getting anywhere and its very frustrating!

Not sure there truzzone. I've been trying to write the image on a DVD+RW disk whilst I'm waiting for some DVD+Rs and it doesn't finalise. Not only that, but I can't get my writer to change the book type so PS2 won't read it anyway. But it does give a full reading in Decrypter and it's same as yours. What method are you using to boot?

I tried something else earlier and results are pretty promising. I borrowed a Swap Magic disk, copied it, booted it using my Magic Modchip, used a slide card to swap disks and away it went. One of the disks that didn't work earlier now works so I'm getting further on that one. Ok, so a slight bit of piracy there, but it was for the cause and the offending disk is now in the hands of the person who lent it!

Speccyfan You're doing a great job there. Just one question. If you're removing data from the VOLs, would the files need to be relinked before rebuilding? Not totally sure how the filesystem works so you'll have to correct me as necessary.

My opinions come with no warranty whatsoever, but are totally open-source, so you can reverse engineer or decompile them as you see fit. All other rights reserved.

not 100 percent here but i believe that toolboys hdd patch removes the size checks, and, hopefully the folders in the directory of the .vol1 file will remain intact after deleting the appropriate pss files (movies)as you'll be removing the file rather than the whole folder thus keeping the structure of the directory and hopefully no re-linking,this is just speculation tho,as i'm pretty new to this myself and would welcome any input regarding re-linking etc,i don't know why darthi8nt (gt4 vol movie extractor creator)didn't include a deleting option as it would've been sooo useful!

magic iso maker 4.9 can delete files from an iso.

if you can extract the movies from the .vol file then it must be only a matter of time before gran turismo 4 file system is created.

if you take the size of the movies from the size of the iso is it less than 4.7GB (hence small enough for DVD5)

@dakillz,
Movie 9.PSS and movie 36.PSS from GT4.vol add up to around 650mb from memory. That would bring it down to dvd5.Problem is, how do we re-create the .vol file after these have been deleted?

I think the epson, net, irx folders don't need to go.Just two files out of gt4.vol may solve the problem.

I'm using swap magic 3.3
My disc boots, i can also create a new save if the memory I put is empty, but i can't go further!
I'll try another time, maybe loading a different save.

Evnflow, not sure what your level of expertise is but just in case you don't know, if you haven't already tried, you need to save the build created by CDVDGEN to an ILM file and use ILM2ISO to build the ISO file. I tried this before, but toxic patch won't work so you need to patch with something else, and I think before you build the ISO.

I tried updating my PS2 slim with Matrix Infinity 1.46 firmware. Turns out I have a CLONE CHIP from what I read on the internet - a MODBO. My chip's buggered. So, PS2 no working the backups no more. Whack.

Alright peeps, I think I may have a "possibility of" 100% successful on a DVD5 backed up. I said "possibility" not quite "sure" yet though. I'm using "MinnWild" at "modchipzone.com's method." However, when I boot up with my Swap Magic 3.6 Plus, it says; "insert bigger TOC disc" - so what is this mean? Remember, I'm still new to the "gaming stuff and all." So, if anyone, anybody knows how to boot this in regards to bigger TOC, then please let me know and I'll try to work on mine.

If I remembered it correctly, after I extracted the files from ISOBuster, then I put it in my hd (a new folder), and burn with "Nero Burning Rom." It went from 4.9GB to a small of 2.49GB only. I then choose the DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO), but it won't let me drag the GT4.Vol from my new folder in HD (it did drag all of the files and folders under GT4.ISO, except GT4.vol. With that being said; Nero's telling me to use only "UDF" compilation instead, and so I did, and I was able to burn all of them onto a single DVD+R disc (yes....successfully completed backed up.)

Again, like I said above, when I load Swap Magic 3.6 Plus, it goes to the usual main menu, I open up Flip Top, put my successful backed up in, close Flip Top, hit [X] to boot, and it's giving me an "insert a bigger TOC disc" - anyone have any idea. Keep in mind that we're all here to do some "contribution" and "help out," so anyone with more experienced on this can tell me what to do. Thanks in advanced and let's all keep working on this hard-@ss GT4 until we have a solution. I believe soon or later someone will have an easy method to back it up on a single DVD5 disc. I guess only time will tell.

Here is the method I'm using: Rebuilding an ISO by MinnWild at modchipzone

(((You must have DVD Decrypter, ISO Buster and Nero Burning Rom)))

(01) Decrypt the PS2 game to your Hard Drive using DVD Decrypter
a) wait until it's finished.
(02) Open up ISO Buster and Open Image File
a) Hold "Shift" and highlight all the game files on the right hand and "extract" them.
b) Put them in a new folder in your HD and save it
(03) Open up Nero Burning Rom
a) Click on "create new," DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO)<--it's the last one in the list.
b) Browse to your folder you created with ISO Buster in HD earlier.
c) Drag and Drop all the game files into Nero in the same order as it is listed in ISO Buster.
d) Have ISO Buster open so you can reference the list in order
e) Nero will change the order of the files in alphabetically, however Nero will burn in the order that you drag and dropped the files.
f) Now you're ready to burn, put a quality blank media (FUJI or Verbatim) in your DVD burner and click on "BURN" image.
g) Sit and wait until it finished. Presto..... you're done.

Alkohol, two reasons why it won't work. Firstly, IsoBuster only extracts Layer-0 from the disk, hence the half size image you are getting there. You'll be missing all the data from the second layer which means you'll get less further than you were before.

Secondly, Nero doesn't build the ISO correctly for PS2. You need Sony CDVDGEN and ILM2ISO to do that.

If I'm wrong you can all shoot me, but I don't think I am.

simpsim1,

Nah... I ain't gonna shoot no one. I simply am just trying a few method to see if I can have a 100% successful on a single layer dvd that's all. Damn, this GT4 is more than hard period. I think you may be right about Nero though. I guess, in the mean time I'll still be able to play and keep both my Original and 88% of backed up. However, it won't hurt to have another back up copy of "100% successful on a DVD5" on hand to prevent from getting scratched or lost by a friend.

By the way, have you figured out any new method yet? I tried it with "Sony CDVDGEN 1.5" - but I got lost at where you open (and browse to your new folder created in HD), I tried to open more than a dozen times and yet I still can't drag them over as stated by the tutorials in the other PS2 forum. And YES.... I do have both "WNASPI32.DLL" on my SYSTEM 32 and inside AHEAD just a note that's all.

like i said before,i'm getting a bit lazy with this one because my dual layer backup works,i do take a look at it every now and then, but am pressed for time most of the time....you all seem to be on the right track, has anyone tried the old school method, i saw someone had posted about deleting a couple of .pss files, try it,but you have to replace those deleted .pss files with dummies, sounds hard i know, but if your good with numbers and hex editing,it should be a goer.
all the tools you need are at www.konsoleforce.wc

PS...take a look at the tuturials on this site, thats where i learnt a bit about PS2 ripping a few years ago,i can't remember the authors name but it was an excellent tutorial. he tells you what you can cut out,how to do it,what to put back, and it's usually the big movie files that get the flick (.pss files)

Ok, I've tried this method 3 times both with a completed backed up on DVD5, both burned with DVD Decrypter. However, when I boot it up, it loads up to the first "Sony Logo" page and then it just keep on spinning and all -- nothing show up what-so-ever. I've been reading a lot about the successfully "GOW" sticky and I tried another similar method by combining this method and GOW method, still no lucks after 3 more attempts of trying, no load what-so-ever again.

After 6 completed backed up, but no lucks on loading, I'm at the point of clueless now, unless a genius come up with a new idea with a successful on a DVD5 back up. I've come to conclusion that my 88% of successful backed up using DVD Decrypter on a single DVD5 is still stand the best overall. At least it will work like the original GT4, but without the "arcade mode" that's all.

Here is a tutorials on how to rebuild ps2 game.

Programs needed: for Rebuiding a PS2 GAME
Dvd Decrypter: http://dvddecrypter.com/index.php?act=download
Isobuster: http://www.isobusterdownload.org/isobuster_all_lang.zip
Cdvdgen: http://www.btinternet.com/~ps2rippininfo/tools/cddvdgen.exe

1) COPY THE PS2 GAME DVD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE AS AN ISO IMAGE.
a)OPEN DVD Decrypter.
b)IN THE DESTINATION AREA, CLICK ON THE FOLDER ICON TO CHOOSE BOTH A NAME AND A STORAGE LOCATION FOR THE ISO IMAGE.
c)CLICK ON MODE > ISO > READ.
d)CLICK ON THE DVD ICON TO START THE PROCESS.
e)WAIT UNTIL THE PROCESS IS FINISHED THEN CLOSE DECRYPTER AND GO TO STEP 2.

2) EXTRACT THE FILES FROM THE ISO IMAGE.
a) CREATE A NEW FOLDER ON YOUR HARD DRIVE TO STORE THE
EXTRACTED FILES.
b) OPEN ISO BUSTER AND CLICK ON FILE > OPEN IMAGE FILE.
c) NAVIGATE TO THE ISO FILE CREATED IN STEP 1 AND CLICK ON ?OPEN?.
d) HOLD THE CONTROL KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD AND LEFT CLICK
EVERY FILE AND FOLDER IN THE LIST.
e) ONCE ALL THE FILES ARE HIGHLIGHTED, RIGHT CLICK ON ONE OF THEM AND CLICK ON ?EXTRACT OBJECTS?.
f) NAVIGATE TO THE NEW FOLDER THAT YOU CREATED ON YOUR
HARD DRIVE AND CLICK ?OK?.
g) WAIT FOR THE PROCESS TO FINISH THEN CLOSE ISOBUSTER.

3) CONVERT THE EXTRACTED FILES INTO 2 BIN FILES.

a) OPEN CDVDGEN.
b) SELECT ?CREATE NEW PROJECT? AND THEN SELECT ?DVD-ROM
MASTER DISC?. DRAG CDVDGEN TO THE LEFT SIDE OF YOUR
SCREEN.
c) NAVIGATE TO THE FOLDER THAT YOU CREATED ON YOUR HARD
DRIVE BACK IN STEP 2 AND OPEN IT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF YOUR SCREEN.
d) SET THE WIDTH OF THAT WINDOW SO THAT IT IS ONLY 1 FILE WIDE. THIS WILL PLACE THE FILES INTO THE SAME ORDER AS THEY WERE ON THE GAME DISK BUT YOU SHOULD CHECK THEM FOR CORRECT ORDER JUST IN CASE.
e) CLICK ON EDIT > SELECT ALL.
f) DRAG ALL THE FILES INTO THE RIGHT SIDE OF CDVDGEN.
g) LOOK FOR A SLUS OR SLES FILE AND WRITE DOWN THE FULL NAME AND THEN CLICK ON THE ?VOLUME? TAB IN CDVDGEN.
h)TYPE SLUS OR SLES (WHICHEVER YOUR FILE NAME IS) INTO THE 1ST BOX NEAR "DISC NAME"
i) TYPE ALL OF THE NUMBERS FROM YOUR FILE NAME, WITHOUT THE PERIOD, INTO THE 2ND BOX.
j) TYPE PLAYSTATION FOR THE PRODUCER NAME AND SELECT THE APPROPRIATE LICENSE AREA.
k)CLICK ON "REC...".
l)SELECT YOUR DESIRED STORAGE LOCATION AND NAME THE FILE STAR.IML
m)YOU WILL GET 2 ERRORS, JUST CLICK OK FOR BOTH.
(If you get one error message, then you have to download ?WNASPI32.DLL? www.Nero.com/us/WNASPI32.DLL.html
and put it in your windows system 32 folder.
n)THE RECORDING SCREEN WILL POP UP, CLICK ON FILE > EXPORT IMAGE AND SAVE IT ON ONE OF YOUR HARD DRIVES (NOT IN A FOLDER) NAME IT STAR.LST
o) WHEN IT'S FINISHED, YOU WILL HAVE 2 FILES NAMED STAR.000 AND STAR.001
p)CLOSE CDVDGEN AND GO TO STEP 4.

4) MERGE THE .000 AND .001 FILES INTO A SINGLE ISO IMAGE.
THE EASIEST WAY TO MERGE THE FILES IS FROM A COMMAND SCREEN.
YOU WON'T HAVE TO INSTALL AN EXTRA PROGRAM THAT MAY NEED
EXTRA FILES TO WORK AND COME ON, ADMIT IT, DOS IS SO MUCH FUN!!
a)CLICK THE WINDOWS START BUTTON AND CLICK ON RUN.
b)TYPE CMD IN THE BOX AND HIT ENTER.
c)CHANGE THE DIRECTORY TO MATCH WHERE YOUR STAR.000 AND STAR.001
FILES ARE STORED.
EXAMPLE- IF THEY ARE ON THE C DRIVE, TYPE CD C:\ AND HIT ENTER.
IF THEY ARE ON ANOTHER DRIVE, TYPE THE DRIVE LETTER WITH A COLON AND HIT ENTER.
d)ONCE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT DIRECTORY-
TYPE COPY/B STAR.000 + STAR.001 STAR.ISO AND THEN HIT ENTER.
e)WHEN IT'S FINISHED YOU WILL HAVE A NEW ISO IMAGE NAMED STAR.ISO THAT YOU CAN NOW BURN IN STEP 5.

5) BURN THE NEW ISO IMAGE ONTO A BLANK DVD.
USE YOUR FAVORITE DVD BURNING UTILITY TO BURN IT AT THE
SLOWEST SPEED.

you will need more than that to rebuild a PS2 game, especially one as big as GT4.
you will need the usual patchers, but before any of that, you will need a rebuilder/extractor,hex editor, dummy file replacer, cddvgen isn't really all that necassary for a dvd5 rip.also nearly forgot an iml2iso..
has any one been working on bat files, etc, etc.like i stated before, the best tutorial i have found on PS2 ripping has been here in the tutorial section.
i'm no expert at this what so ever,so i'm sure you all know that you can make up your own bat. files, rip.exe, etc, etc via notepad? it's just a matter of studying the layout of the game, using #'s,adding, taking some out, then rebuilding, then patching, making ISO
i know it's easy to say,but i am assuming it is only something basic and we are all missing it.also has anyone tried using the extractor/rebuider tool from www.konsoleforce.ws

evenflow,

Just hit "OK" and "OK" and you should be all set to go. As stated by the tutorial, you really should have 2 errors after hitting "REC". If you happened to have only 1 error, then you need to download ?WNASPI32.DLL? www.Nero.com/us/WNASPI32.DLL.html
and put it in your window's "system 32" or "CDVDGEN" folder.

R1th3n, valid point. As I said before, it was the best anti pre-release weapon they could have come up with. However, it's not that it's a particularly hard game to crack, it's mainly that a cracked version has already been released (DVD-9) and it works for around 80-90% of the modded PS2 population. So basically the main geezers have now moved onto their next big projects and now have very little, if any time to spend on DVD-5ifying this project. OK so some peeps are still working on it, but it's mainly the small-time tinkerers such as myself and others here.

That's not to say it'll never be done. I've been having a stab myself, but the learning curve is bloody steep. The main problem is extracting and rebuilding the vol files (there are 2). The current tools we have for these paint a strange picture. Quite a few of the "Files" inside the vols seem to have no file extensions (Are they really true files at all or are the vols encrypted in a way that fools the GTFS extractors into giving the wrong filenames?)

My knowledge of hex editing is not too great at the best of times so I am relying on patches that others have made. This is as far as I have reached so far and you see it's not far at all. Alkohol has managed to find a (Partly) working alternative, although from my own experience, it only works for me if I use a memory card with a game save already on it and works with DVD+R disks only.

@Samuels, do you have a link to the extractor you mentioned earlier. I've had a look on the site and can't find it (My German's not too good these days lol). Otherwise I'm pretty much starting to beat my head against a brick wall.

My opinions come with no warranty whatsoever, but are totally open-source, so you can reverse engineer or decompile them as you see fit. All other rights reserved.
