if you're messing with your router... then set it to give you computer a static ip... then within PSO set the gateway and dns to your computer's ip. it doesn't need to be 192.168.0.100 or 192.168.1.100 or 192.168.2.100. it doesn't have to be anything. in fact, your PCs IP address could be X.Xx.Xxx.Xyz and as long as you set the default gateway and dns in PSO to X.Xx.Xxx.Xyz then you're good to go.

speaking of routers. internal port fowarding is not necessary right?

so fowarding ports 5173 and 9002, to my PCs internal ip is not necessary right?

still not working with PSOI&IIplus (which i heard just won't work at all, but then the guy tried to sell me his PSOI&II for $75, when anyone can get it from ebgames.com for $35...).

Does psul work with PSOI&II plus?
Is my router config proper?

Thanks,
Matt

I'm affraid so I had to go buy PSO I&II.not the Plus edition. which really sucks because it cost more the other one (5 bucks more used. But you can make it work but you have a lot of work to do. you have to configure a DNS server to run on your computer and point the address URL that it looks for back to your computer. I'll find a linke that kinda explains some of this. but its alot of work to make it work
http://forum.gc-compat.com/viewtopic.php?t=614&highlight=pso+plus
try reading that it explains a little more

bizquick:
"the address URL that it looks for back to your computer" is which address? the one that Phantasy Star looks for? Doesn't PSUL take care of that?

From what I read on that, it makes no sense, because your router will redirect outgoing and incoming DNS requests to your PC. I'm better off just using a cross over cable...

I know that the gamecube is at least talking to the computer... because PSUL resolved the DNS request.

Are you sure that that's the only way to do it with a router? Keep in mind that my computer has a reserved IP.

Anyway... I guess I'll have to attempt to return this game to EB. Then hunt down the original. Bizquick, if I use the original version, will it just allow me to connect through my router?

Also: has anyone tried to get their hands on mini-dvds and burn a gamecube disc? I read that they us GD-rom discs, except a GD-rom holds less than a gig, and gamecube images are about 1.5gbs... Anyone? or do I have to be the first?

Thanks,

Matt

ok I have the PSO 1+2PLUS disk and the gc is connected to the pc via cat 5 cross over patch, downloaded the files stated, and followed the directions, but as far as I can see, I might be doing something wrong, my gc keeps saying that the server may be down

Okay lots of Q's in that post Lets start with that first one. (thi is about PSO 1and2 Plus)

I'm not sure what address it looks for but I know I did find it somewhere on a thread on that other message board. and PSUL does not take care of this problem. The game itself is locked to look for real world DNS servers. so what you have to do it 2 things 1.) You have to give your computer like 2 IP's you can add a second IP address in XP easy. also that IP needs to be like a real world IP address. 2) you also need to be running a DNS server on your XP box so you can redirect the DNS request from the gamecube. what you will have to do is make a pointer in your DNS server to re-direct the that address that its calling for. back to that second IP address that you gave your XP computer.
So seeing how these steps are kind of a long processes thats why I just when thur and bought the older version.

Now if you are using the Plus edition there will be no way it will work without a router. I just don't think you could fool the Gamecube enough with out a router. But I could be proven wrong.

Oh and as for the orginal PSO 1&2 edition I got that working great with a router and without so it works fine. but I will tell you this. you most likely will have to force the NIC speed on your computer to get the games to actualy load. I got stuck on loading screens untill I did that. so just a little advise on that. I wish the Plus edition was not so much a problem to get going because I think the speeds where improved. and I'm not even sure the Plus edition even works correctly anyway. But it did say somewhere you could edit your PSOLoad or PSUL save file with a ARMax. but I got lost trying to find information on that.

bizquick,
you're the man. thanks.

The easiest solution is to get the original. alright, i'll do that.

I have a nic that's a gigabit. Should I hook it up to that one?
I accidentally have three NICs, two on board, and card; how? my old board got fried and this one happened to have what i needed; didn't even realize it had two on board nics.

As far as using a router goes, with PSO I & II (not plus)... do you have to foward ports?

Thanks,

Matt

Well I just did what the document said about putting the computer in a in a DMZ. The IP address that you assign the DNS server to. but you could do the port foward thing but if you have the phenox loader you can adjust the ports to what you want anyway so your call. but if you have alot of troube getting it goign remeber if you get it to save and games are not loading its a good change its that speed setting on your NIC. I'm sure there would be away to make it work with out doing that but your delay settings would have to be played with alot. now what I found to work for me because my router won't let me force port speeds or anything. on my NIC it lets me choose like Auto Neg and like a speed setting. so I have like 4 Auto setting I can use for my NIC or I can force the speed but some router won't with force speed so I use the auto and 10 half. my Nic is on board on my mother board I have a AMD with a MSI motherboard.

no but I'm deffinatly sure I could if I setup my own DNS server and pointed it back to my computer and did all the steps that I listed out. I don't think it would be any great benifit making PSO Plus work either because of all the work needed to make it work. I still think sega forces the speed down to 10 meg half anyway so it really would not be a great benifit. If for some reason I'm wrong I guess I could get it working. and try to post some what simple steps to make it work. But I don't think the average users here would not really understand what I was doing to make it work. If you know somthing about setting up DNS servers and such and you really want to get your PSO plus edition working I could work with someone I guess and help them get it going. But you will need to setup your own DNS server and make pointers in that server that will redirect what sega wants to go to. I think the best way and easyest it finding out how to modifiy that ARmax save file so it will work with PSO Plus edition. I don't know I guess I'll try messing with it next week and let ya all know but I think its going to be quite a pain to ake it work and all you are going to save in money is about 5 to 15 dollars and I don't think anyone will gain anything other than some people might learn some information about DNS servers and what they do.

you could try to capture packets from the gamecube to find the address? or at least the ip of the server?

if we can get that, then it'd be real easy to do. then all you'd have to do is give your computer the ip of the sega server.

just use a cross over cable, and capture packets from the gamecube directly.

weeeee... heh

well I don't think you could ever do it with a crosse over cable because it does a DNS request to a sega server. so you would have to runa DNS server to point it back to your computer. if it just went to a cerntaint IP then it would be easy to fix thats for sure. thats why using a cross over cable I think won't work at all. but technaily you could like setup a lan with a hub and run a DNS server and make all the entrys point back to your computer that might work.and I wouldn't need a snifffer to figure out what address its going to just running a DNS server on my computer and pointing the cube to my computer can tell me that because I just check the log file for what server it queryed for.

Just an idea. Has anyone tried using an "external" dynamic DNS Server (for example, dyndsn.org or zoneedit.com). Can the the gamecbue network settings accept Nameserver "letters" (mr69ways.homeip.net) or on just Namserver "numbers (151.196.x.x), then in the router forward the request on the port to your computer running PSOload?

you know the Idea of using a external DNS server won't work because PSO plus does make a call to an outside sega server. So thats why you have to run your own DNS server to trick the cube to point back to your computer. if it went to a public IP all you would have to do is assign your computer with that IP and disconnect it from the web. but it doesn't. it uses a URL.

I understand now. By running your own DNS Server you get to determine what the name of the DNS server is (i.e. sega.net).

By the way what port(s) does PSO+ use.

so as far as what I make from reading, if I am using PSO 1&2 "PLUS" version with out a router, I am stuck between a Sh!t and a Fart, and wasted 35 bucks?

kilt: just buy [ http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/223852.asp ]phantasy star online I & II.
sell ebgames back your shitty one, you'll probably be out $20... but what else are you gonna do?

cloud 69: once i get pso I & II from ebgames, by selling back plus, i'll let you know. I'm 99% confident that it'll work with a router.

Biz-quik: try to use some punctionation and spacing, my friend.... your posts are really difficult to read and understand

Hey all

Exactly WHAT format is Gamecube games?

My CD/DVD writer/reader comes up with a message saying that it is not a disc that the computer can read.
