Sony Unveils New Self-Destructive DVD Player
By Brian Briggs and Christa Morse
Tokyo - Many industry analysts have wondered which way Sony would go in the
copyright protection debate. Sony manufactures both hardware, which is
harmed by piracy controls, and entertainment, which is helped by piracy
controls. A recent release of a self-destructive DVD player shows that the
entertainment division is winning that internal argument.
"Large amounts of pirated material were hopefully destroyed in the blaze,"
said MPAA officials.
"Copy protection has been foiled too easily by pirates, and we need to do
something more effective," said Sony Entertainment vice-president Harold
Wang. "Self-destructive DVDs have been tried, but rejected by consumers. We
feel that consumers will embrace the self-destructive DVD players, because
it gives them that Mission Impossible I've-got-the-latest-gadget feeling. We
even have the player say 'This DVD player will self-destruct in 10
seconds.'"
Wang addressed the safety concerns of destroying a DVD player: "Sure there
are safety issues, but most homes are equipped with smoke detectors these
days, and are chock full of pirated material which would be destroyed in the
blaze. OK, their house might burn down, but isn't that a small price to pay
to combat piracy?"
Instead of the standard low-powered laser most DVD players are equipped
with, the SD-DVD player from Sony has a high-powered laser which will
eventually burn through the DVD and ignite the highly flammable material
from which the player is made.
Other DVD player manufacturers such as Panasonic and Hitachi also announced
self-destructive player. "I've seen the Sony model and it slowly catches
flame and burns up. Our model is fitted with a small amount of plastic
explosives which causes a much more dramatic destruction. Consumers will
feel like they're in the movie when that thing goes off," said Ronald Misuki
of Panasonic.
Hollywood applauds the move. Chairman of the MPAA Jack Valenti said, "Not
having a DVD player makes it absolutely impossible to view pirated content,
which makes copying a DVD entirely useless. Granted, it also makes watching
the damn thing impossible, but we don't care if you can't see the content,
just as long as you buy brand new, legitimate copies from your local or
online store."
DVD rental chains Blockbuster and Hollywood video expect to reap a large
benefit from consumers who forget to eject a DVD before the player
self-destructs."

Em don?t know about Japan or the US but here in the UK we have a wee thing called Health And Safety and i can tell you one thing Self-Destructive DVD Player's WILL not be aloud in the UK. Then there?s the fact people WILL sue for sure hehe we know the Americans just love suing people (only kidding)
There just being plain ******* stupid if they think people are going to pay for this just because they say it's hip.
I also really can not see Sony doing this with the ps3 people dont want to pay for a new console ever time the thing blows up :-)

This article has nothing to do with the PS3. Also, this will never fly with the cosumers the way the self destructing dvd's never made it.
All in all....Sony will never make the consumer buy and rebuy a dvd player, they will loose to many customers to competetors this way.

if it was real,
if my dvd player would say "self destruct in 10 seconds"
i would simply pull the plug
if i wanted to play pirated games on it, i would simply replace the dvd player

no its a good idea...this way you can walk into people's homes, insert a pirated disc, and watch their house burn down. It's the most legal assassination can get!

WTF!! Sony is out of their mind to come up with something like this. They can shove it up their holes. How many houses must burn before they realize this idea is dumb?

You don't like someone with a PS3 get them a pirated game, bye-bye! Sony would not do that, they want to be the Media Center, music movies and games. After the house burns down, do you buy another PS3, would cost less that the house. Thats just too funny!!

i think sony is in league with al keida.yeah they just promoted osama bin laden to ceo.its obviously a joke story to make fun of the situation.if you think about it,if sony is so concerned about people pirating their movies and games then why do they give you the tools to do so.they dont have to make dvd writers and blank media, knowing the only good purpose is to copy games and movies(i doubt anybody buys a 100pk spindle of dvdrs to copy their home movies,if you know what i mean).so they get their money back one way or another.

Quote: its obviously a joke story to make fun of the situation
its a parody ;) hehehe gotchya yall :P
Quote: i doubt anybody buys a 100pk spindle of dvdrs to copy their home movies,if you know what i mean
the same applies to
*broadband/cable internet
*Large Hard disk drives "120GB+"
Quote: ,knowing the only good purpose is to copy games and movies
Remember that you can copy games and movies as long as you have the rights or own these games and movies. Owning a Gun doesn't mean that you can just use it to kill people for no reason.
Quote: so they get their money back one way or another.
They're greedy F***ers basically but still this is the law and this is their right.
