@lisa32 - first of all are these actually Verbatim ? , or another band that have the MCC identifier ?
is the backup on the ard drive, and you're actually burning and getting the CRC errors on the burn to an MCC disc? ... or are you getting CRC errors on attempting to rip the film TO the hard drive. ?
Oh, and what film is it, it could be the protection that you're struggling with..

it could also be you need to update your firmware on your dvd burner, i was helping some other guy with his setup and he had problems recognizing the 16x TYs...
what burner are you using? and what speed are you attempting to burn the film to dvd at? if you are maxing out at 16x, this might be the cause of your errors...slow it down a bit, i personally have used about 30 of these Verbatim dvd+r 16x myself and i burn mine at 8x with flawless results~ MCC004 IS great media that everyone is talking about~ :)
also, as creaky stated...you might be having some problems with the encryption if it is a newer movie, but, assuming you have the newest version of decrypter, that shouldn't be a problem. :)
having 10 out of 25 is a pretty bad ratio to have burned successfully, i don't think it's a "bad batch" i think there is something going on with your setup that is causing these bad burns.

Its quite possible that you actually have a very good named brand but not neccessarily an A Grade Disc.Rather a C or D grade disc.
What color are they underneath.I remember not to long ago that ritek had some discs out that were meant to be A grade but were grey in color underneath and it turned out that they were actually a cheaper quality disc that you could maybe use once and then that was it.

What kind of writer are you using? Some 16x writers only support certain media. My Liteon would not support the 16x Verbatim but my L.G. 4163B and my Nec 3520A would. It all depends on the writer and the firmwware. Have you updated your firmware? Try that frist.

I bought the same ones at Best Buy 16x + Verbatim Made in Taiwan. They code to MCC 004 and I haven't had any problems with them. They usually top out at 14x and avg 9.25 on a full disc. I only think I find funny is that I get better burns with 8x Yuden 000-T-02 that burn at 12x in my Nec 3520A.

i have an external burner.it's a Plextor Px-712-UF 12x/4x/16x DVD+RW, 8x/4x/16x DVD-RW, 48x/24x/48x CD-RW. Not sure on what that means b/c i am new to this computer world. However, i am using the dvd shrink 3.2.0.15 version & decrytper 3.5.4.0 version.First, I click the dvd43 and it's the update one. This way it can bypass the encryption of the movies that i am trying to backup. Second, i put the movie into my internal F drive & the blank in the H drive which is the plextor burner. I open up the shrink and click open disc, scroll down to f: and it starts to analyze it. Once it's finished i click re-author b/c i only want the movie.Which this moves it to the left side. Finally i hit backup. Usually takes between 20-30mins. Depends on movie size. Then onces it finishes encoding it directly goes to the H drive to burn the movie. I put the burning speed at 4x. Also, i have it set to where it's suppose to ignore errors. It's going gr8 in the beginning until like about 50% into burning it it will come up with a CRC error. errrrrrrrr it makes me mad b/c i waste a dvd+r each time in doing this process. I mean the movie encodes greatly but when the decrypter takes over to burn it screws up like that. Also, i clean both dvd+r's with a little soap & water b4 i use them. It's just very discouraging b/c i try everything and it's not working for me.Oh by the way just to rehiterate i'm using dvd+r verbatim 16x & they r good ones. They are the MCC-004-00 made in Tawain. I am sure that they r good dvd+r's.The reason why i know this is only b/c a friend in here told me to get this program called dvd identifer and says they r good.So my questiion to you is,"how do i update my firmware?" Maybe this is what's wrong with here. Please help me b/c i would love to have more successful backups.. thx people... :o)

may i ask what firmware version are you currently using? i think the official one on plextor's site is v1.07 being the most recent~ i don't own a plextor drive, but, im sure flashing it is identical to my other 5 drives that i DO own` :P
also, to find out what firmware you are using...if you open up that dvd identifier program again..at the very top after your drive in between [FW xxxx] will tell you what firmware you currently have (those "xxxx" i put in there should be 1.0x for you). you just need to check to see what that last number is~ i think the firmware problem will resolve the issue w/ this newer media...many drives will not recognize 16x media properly without firmware update~ this was true for me as well~
let us know~

This question should probably be in the drives forum but, does anyone know if you can use the Plextor 716a external without the Plextools software and how does it perform, as good as the internal or not?

hehehe...creaky is right~ plz download the NEWEST firmware, which in your case lisa, is v1.07. :)
there are detailed instructions as to how to properly flash firmware...right there on that link~ make sure you do it correctly, as i've destroyed one of my drives in my earlier days incorrectly flashing~ :P
that being said, i suppose once it has been updated the 16x media should be recognized and your burning will be successful~ let's keep our fingers crossed~ :)
good luck lisa~

while i do not own a plextor, i would assume the rules of dvd drives would apply regardless of brand. :P
i figure an internal would be faster, using an IDE cable rather than a USB 2.0 or firewire hookup, but, that is just a guess~ i don't have any experience with external burners as ALL 6 of mine that i currently use or have had in the past have been internal~
from what i know about Plextools, it seems to work very well w/ the plextor drives, i am not familiar with it's functions, but, im sure it could be done to setup your external without using the tools, i just don't know how~ lol
i know that doesn't help much but perhaps i'll ring in a friend to help with your issue...he has a plextor and he's pretty proficient with it and it's many functions~

Thanks for the reply:
I just do nopt want to spend 125.00USD and not be able to use the drive efficently. I know a firewire is better than USB but my main problem is getting past the Plextools software that actually can change the speed settings. Thanks Again

I use a Plextor 715A internal and I dont use the Plextor tools software. I use either shrink, Nero,or copydvd and you can set the speed on the device. Make sure you download the new firmware.

i didn't reply before as hadn't used DVD burners by Plextor, but i should really have said the same thing - there would be no reason why any burner, cd or dvd or whatever, would be unusable if you didn't install the maker's software/tools.
